Chapter 26 - You Don't Understand

"19 years have passed—" Amon started, "—and this is still what you want to ask about?"

"Well, yes." Lilith grinned, now more comfortable talking to Amon now that they are alone. "If you can't answer why I have to meet you a while ago and why Sicily said I am connected to you or whatever it is that she meant... can I at least know about this?"

"No." Amon's tone was direct—strong even, having no intention to answer her question no matter how adamant Lilith is. "I will not answer your question and will not even intend to even the slightest."

As Amon decided to walk away and was about to, Lilith widened her eyes in surprise and then immediately reached out to him.

As the young lady caught Amon by his cape, the Grim Reaper turned his head to look at her, hearing her words that seemed to have an etch of pain lingering in it.

"Why... why must you avoid me so?"

Amon's body stiffened the moment he felt Lilith grab his cape. It was not a part of his body and just his clothing but even then, he immediately felt uncomfortable.

He always avoided Lilith. He never wanted to get close to her. He never wanted to get near her. He thought that once he left the kingdom for how many years, Lilith would completely forget the feeling of curiosity and leave him alone.

But his disappearances... it indeed made him realize that it intensified her curiosity even more!

"Amon." Lilith said his name, getting his attention. "Answer me. Why are you avoiding me?"

"You're... overbearing. You know that?"

Even though the Grim Reaper said that in a hushed tone, Lilith was able to hear it still—her heart slightly aching with what she heard from him.

"You... I'm... what?"

Amon didn't answer her. Instead, he harshly pulled his cape away from her hand, slightly pulling her towards him.

"You heard what I said," Amon answered coldly. "There is no need to repeat it."

"You!!"

Lilith fumed in anger, her face slightly turning red. She was obviously flustered by how she was being treated after not seeing each other for 19 years.

"Whatever did I do wrong? I didn't do anything to you that would insult or hurt you or whatsoever. Do I deserve such treatment?!"

"No," Amon answered, sighing as he felt himself having a splitting headache from this conversation.

He didn't ever want to justify his actions and he never would want to explain... so what is the point of having this right now?

"You will never understand. With how I'm treating you, you should leave me alone."

Even though Amon reiterated that, Lilith still held her ground. She grabbed him once more, this time by the arm. Amon widened his eyes and grunted, already annoyed with how he is being handled by this little lady in front of him.

"What the hell!? Lilith!" The Grim Reaper exclaimed, further expressing his frustration. "Let me go! Why are you being so difficult?"

"I'm being difficult?!" Lilith furrowed her brows together and glared at him. "Look who's talking! Who's being difficult!?"

"Lilith." Amon said her name, authority evident in the tone of his voice. "Let me go."

"You have to tell me! Why are you avoiding me—why are you acting this way? You won't do this if there is no reason! There is something there! Definitely!"

"There is none!"

Amon pushed Lilith by the shoulders. With him not expecting to even touch the young lady, he felt uncomfortable that even though he was trying his best not to look at her, he feared that he might break her.

He should protect her—he should fulfill his promise until the end.

But how? With Lilith acting this way, how could he ever fulfill it?

"There is none, Lilith." Amon said, his voice softer as he let go of her. Lilith's head hung low, still not understanding why the Grim Reaper is acting this way. "Leave me alone."

The Grim Reaper turned his back away from her. As he started walking away to leave the place, what Lilith said under her breath made him stop in his tracks.

"I thought you were gentle... I thought you were kind."

'What?'

Amon turned to his side. With his eyes subtly looking at Lilith who was holding her left arm, she spoke again, her eyes slightly teary.

"You patted my head 19 years ago in such kindness. I wondered why you left and I was waiting for you for who knows why and now that you came home... it's as if you're a different person."

Lilith then looked at him, knowing fully well that the Grim Reaper can hear her. Tears escaped her eyes as she further expressed her annoyance.

"I don't get it. I just don't get it. Why are you acting that way and why is it that it annoys me so much? Why does it make me feel that I have done something wrong when I know I didn't?"

Lilith's body started to tremble uncontrollably as she tried her best to keep her upcoming tears at bay. With her voice softer, but strong at the same time as she outspokenly told her how she felt, Amon just stood there, listening to her outburst.

"I don't know why... I don't know why it hurts to be treated like that when all I want to do is just talk to you! You—!!"

Before Lilith could even continue her sentence, she was surprised to what had happened before her. Without warning even though she is familiar of immortal beings' powers, Amon magically appeared right in front of her.

It was as if everything at this moment was in slow motion. Amon hesitantly reached out to Lilith, but still, he did. He pulled her towards her by touching the back of her neck, and then soon patting her on the head like how he did it to her 19 years ago.

"You don't understand—" Amon started, his voice now gentle so he could soothe Lilith. "—I have to protect you. I have to."

'What?'

"A-Amon—"

And before Lilith could even process what was happening between them, the Grim Reaper disappeared into thin air, leaving her alone in the middle of the maze as the water of the fountain was the only sound that she could hear.
