Chapter 1 - The Assassin: 'Dark Shadow'

A tall man in his early 20s with an excellent physique was standing in a dark alley while holding a dual-edged dagger.

His face was devoid of any emotions. He was as cold as the winter snow. He was wearing all black as his assassin's clothes.

By just looking at his sharp dark eyes, someone felt like he could see death was coming his way.

His cold deep voice could easily send shivers down someone's spine. This man was a very dangerous person and no one wanted to cross paths with him.

Because if they did, they would encounter misfortune. And the worst case, they would never see the sun rising from the east once again.

Zach, also known as the Dark Shadow, was one of the infamous assassins of the Phantom Assassin Guild.

He was the most cold-blooded and ruthless assassin in the guild who never failed a mission before.

"Your time is up! Say your prayers now before I send you to your final destination," Zach said in his stern cold voice.

In front of him, kneeling was a man whose face was covered with blood, whimpering in pain as he begged Zach to spare his life.

"Please, don't kill me. I can give you the money. Just tell me how much you need. Please…" the bloody man was rubbing his palms together while kowtowing before him.

Zach's lips twitched into a sinister smile. He was a meticulous assassin. He would not spare his target even if they would try to negotiate with him, offering him a great amount of money.

He found pleasure in seeing his prey cower in fear while begging him desperately for their lives. He took joy from that, hearing their desperate plea while whimpering and trembling in both pain and fear.

The man could no longer stand on his feet since Zach already fractured both his ankles in both legs. He mercilessly cut the man's legs using his favorite dual-edged dagger to see more blood on his victim.

This man suffering before him was a whistleblower who was helping the police in seizing the operation of the Syphiruz Syndicate. The hit came from them.

The blood oozing out of his forehead was already mixed with his sweat and tears. His target was barely hanging on but he was still trying his best to negotiate with him.

"Please spare me. I have a five-year-old daughter who is waiting for me at home. Today is her birthday. I promised her that I would bring her favorite chocolate cake. Please, I still want to see my daughter."

Zach knew that the man was telling the truth. He saw him drop by the bakeshop while he was tailing him a while ago.

He bought a cake inside the bakeshop together with three balloons. An expression of both joy and excitement could be seen on his face when he came out of the shop.

Zach clicked his tongue while shaking his head.

"You shouldn't have messed with the Syphiruz Syndicate if you wanted to stay alive together with your family. But it's too late now. Nothing will change even if you cry here with blood. You will still die tonight and I will be the one to kill you."

The man continued crying. He already knew that no one could help him now. The place was isolated from the crowd, with no passersby nor vehicles traveling in that area.

"Now, did you regret doing the right thing? What is the purpose of doing good if you will just die because of it? Now, you will be separated from your family, most especially from your beloved daughter. You will never see her again." Zach continued ridiculing his action, emphasizing the biggest mistake he had made that brought him to this predicament.

The man clenched his fists. He stopped begging. He knew that he could not escape his fate tonight.

"I didn't regret it. Syphiruz is an evil organization that harmed lots of innocent people. My death will not be in vain. I served my purpose. If doing good things will give my daughter a peaceful and safer living environment then I don't mind dying for that."

Zach burst out laughing, watching the man in amusement.

"What a foolish ideal from a righteous pretentious man? Have you forgotten that you were once a member of that organization? You are no hero. You are just a fool!" Zach mocked him.

"I guess a cold-blooded assassin like you would never understand,' he retorted and asked, "Before you became this evil, have you not ever done a good thing?"

Zach just frowned at him, not showing him any emotions.

"Why don't you try doing good things sometimes?"

Zach let out another sarcastic laugh before responding to the man.

"I did good things in the past but it didn't benefit me at all so I just decided to become a ruthless villain."

The man lifted his head and flashed a bittersweet smile on his bloody face. He took a deep breath, a sullen look plastered in his eyes.

"You can kill me now. But please, can you do me one favor? Since I can't keep my promise to my daughter, can you fulfill it on my behalf?" The man said with his hoarse voice.

His tears continued to fall from the corner of his eyes as he glanced one last time at his car where the cake, the gift, and the balloons for his daughter were.

After a while, the man slammed his eyes shut, waiting for Zach to plunge his dagger at his heart or cut his neck to finally end his life.

Zach walked closer to the man. He leaned over and whispered something to him before slitting his throat using his dagger.

There was no hint of resentment in the eyes of the man whom he killed. He even smiled at his last moment, just thinking about the charming smile of his sweet little daughter.

'I'm sorry my princess. Dad can't come home on your birthday. But still, I am wishing you a happy birthday. I love you so much.'

Zach watched the man fall to the ground as he caught his last breath. He saw him smiling while shedding the last drop of his tears.

Zach got his phone and called his client, informing him about the mission accomplished.

He was about to leave and ride his motorcycle when he suddenly stopped on his track. As if his feet had a mind of their own, he turned around and traced his steps towards the car.

He opened the car and got three items inside~ the balloons, the gift, and the cake.

'Heh, I guess I will be a delivery man tonight to meet a birthday celebrant. Damn, am I being possessed by this man's spirit?'
