Chapter 2 - Chapter 1

~Dream~

I am swimming, but I'm not sure where. The sky is dark. There are no stars nor moon in the sky. I was swimming blind in a vase ocean that seemed like it went on forever. Since I couldn't see, I continue to swim, which doesn't help. I take in my surrounding but stop when I see a looming shape coming my way. Stupidly, I swim toward it. A few minutes of swimming and I still hadn't reached the shape. It seemed to get farther and farther away the closer I got. I tried to shout, but no sound came out. I was mute. Then something wrapped around my ankle. It yanked hard, sending me into the depth below. My mouth filled with water as I tried swimming back to the surface. Whatever was holding me only tighten its grip and continued to drag me under. I kicked wildly, panicked. It wouldn't let go, so I did the only thing I could I gave in.....

~End of dream~

I jolt, wake struggling to gasp for air. My lungs burn and my throat feels like sandpaper. I rush to the bathroom and splash water on my face. The cool liquid calming my racing heart. I stare at myself in the mirror. A stranger with puffy hazel eyes and wild tangled strawberry blonde hair stares back at me. I don' my even recognize myself anymore the dreams stared a month ago. Some were me drowning, others finding the people I care about ripped into shreds and laid out like red ribbons.

I drag myself back to bed. Picking up my phone, I realize that I've got two texts from my besties: Rena and Victor, telling me happy birthday. I text them back, telling them thank you, then check the time, its 4:30 a.m. and a Saturday. I wouldn't be getting any sleep, so I decide to take a hot shower to relieve myself of from the dream.

Once I finished, I cross to my closet, picking out something to wear. I decide to on a lavender halter top, faded blue jeans, a pair of white vans, and my aquamarine earrings. Satisfied with my look, I put my hair in a braid and head downstairs toward the kitchen. Since my mom and dad are still sleeping, I decide to make breakfast.

"Aren't we supposed to making breakfast for you this morning, Alex?"

I turn just as mom comes into the kitchen with dad in tow. They both wear sleepy eyed expressions, and I can't help but chuckle. They're so cute together I wonder if I can have a relationship like that with someone, but my chances were slim.

"You guys were still asleep when I woke, so I decide to make breakfast." I shrug, pouring the chocolate chip batter into the griddle.

"Here, let me and your dad do this. Today is your birthday. Why don't you go check the mail?"

I don't argue as they washed their hands and finished cooking. Opening the front door, warm Kentucky spring wind greeted me. I breathe a sigh as clean, mountainous air fills my lungs.

The walk to the mailbox wasn't far, so I trudged back, checking to see if I had anything. Most of the time I didn't, but occasionally, my Granny Daisy would send me letters. And today I was right. I had two letters, one from Gran and a black envelope with a golden waxed seal of a lion. I opened that one first wonder who would send me something so important.

I nearly dropped all the mail as I read the letter for a second time.

My parents had some explaining to do.

Lots and lots of explaining.
