Chapter 22 - The Fede ring

"It's just a useless old ring," the words Ella muttered echoed in Amanda's head and she smirked. She had never been one to care about looks and she felt that the ring was beautiful. Not that she cared about Ella's words. She never really had. She could boast of vast knowledge from reading books because she knew that the ring she had was a 'Fede ring', for it had, two hands clasping a heart topped with a crown. The small crown was made of a small green stone which she guessed to be jade. What more could it signify than 'togetherness'.

She also cherished the ring more because it was of sentimental value to Kelvin. And it took a big heart for someone to part with that. That gesture alone told her that his feelings for her were genuine.

She looked at her sister and simply smiled just as she noticed that Ella had her gaze on the men. Ella had a frown and Amanda did not know what it was about since Ella was jesting about her ring a few moments before. But Tasha's comments threw light on it and she shook her head at Tasha's gimmicks. She wisely stayed out of it though.

Eddy stood next to Kelvin and stared him down. He didn't know what had come over him, but he couldn't stop himself. Kelvin suddenly said,

"If you have nothing to say, I have to get back to work," Then he turned to leave but stopped and added, "We can have any talks later since we are family now." Then he was gone.

The dinner went incident-free after this. The reporters were extremely happy that they had a lot of headlines to throw out to the world. In fact, most did not stay after this as they had a lot to put together for their respective morning shows and paper editions.

Mitch, Wallace and his wife, Eddy and Ella were part of the last to leave. Mitch threw an angry glare at Amanda, but she just looked on sadly at her father and wondered what she had done wrong.

Yvonne stayed behind and chatted with Amanda and Tasha after everyone had left as they waited for Kelvin.

"Hello mum, you waited for me?" he asked when he came out and saw the three ladies. He felt warm in his heart at the thought. He took a seat by Amanda and clasped her hands in his. This earned him a raised eyebrow from Yvonne but as they were in public, she decided to have a talk with him later. Rather she said,

"I know my ex-husband like the back of my hand so I am almost sure of what he might do next. I fear for the safety of my daughter."

"Can you stay with Amanda for tonight please?"

"We'll talk about anything else later."

Kelvin replied with a very humble voice, "Do not worry mum, nothing will happen to her while I am by her side. You have my promise on that."

This made Yvonne nod her head and then she got up to leave and then said,

"Amanda, dear, I will see you tomorrow morning for breakfast then we can talk more. I am a little tired tonight."

"Yes mummy," she replied and added,

"Mum, can you drop Tasha off at the apartment, I have something to do with Kelvin first, so I'll come in later."

"Okay dear," Yvonne responded and left with Tasha who sent a knowing smile their way before she disappeared from their sight.

"What do you want us to do?" Kelvin questioned.

"Can we go to your place?" He hesitated for just a fraction of a second but then helped her up, and flagged down a taxi for them. He was not one to take a taxi anywhere, but he felt that Amanda needed it and he wanted to be the gentleman for his new wife.

'Beo Grade-R-Complex Cluster of Buildings', Amanda read the name out loud to herself as she looked at the signage in front of Kelvin's building.

When they entered his room, Amanda was fascinated but knew that they would not be able to stay there. I mean how would they be able to stay with his roommate and not talk about the fact that he was on the top part of the bunk bed.

"Can we stay at my place for now?" she asked.

"If it's okay with you then it wouldn't bother me as your mum wants me to keep you company for now. But Amanda, this should be a temporal solution because I will find us a place tomorrow so that I do not inconvenience Tasha in the apartment." Kelvin replied and explained his thought process as well.

Amanda nodded because she knew that he was right.

Kelvin did not live on much so his belongings which were just a few clothes and some important memoirs fit into one small duffle bag. He picked it up and left a note for his roommate. Lastly, he dropped off, his key and paid off his last rent so that the roommate would not be put in a difficult position.

The couple got into another Taxi and this time, headed towards Amanda's apartment.

Tasha had a surprised look on her face when she saw them come into the apartment especially when she saw the duffle bag in Kelvin's hand.

"Can I borrow her for a bit?" she asked Kelvin but before he could reply, Amanda quickly interjected, "Let me show him around so that he can refresh himself. I'll be with you in a few minutes Tasha."

"Okay, I'll be in my room," Tasha responded and left.

Amanda showed Kelvin her room. It was a medium-sized room with one window and a small wardrobe facing the window. The double bed was in the middle of it, and she had a small study desk by the bed with a chair.

The one thing Kelvin observed was that the place was kept impeccably clean. Kelvin set his bag down and followed as Amanda showed him the rest of the apartment. The tour was over in about a minute as there wasn't much to see. It was just the hall, kitchen, and bathroom as well as the two bedrooms. Kelvin decided to take a shower to refresh himself as Amanda went to speak with Tasha not knowing that she just entered the gossip queen's room.
