Kelvin stared at the back of the old gentleman after he had left and sighed. "The answer to his questions probably laid in the piece of paper in his hand." He reasoned with himself and opened it.
His eyes widened and a plethora of emotions went across his face as he read and re-read the message many times, but the contents remained the same. He was initially surprised, then confused and then sceptical. Finally, he placed it in his pocket and then went back to the main room where the dinner was taking place.
As he entered, he noticed that the mood of the place was weird which was a given, but he did not care one bit. The meal had been served and people's attention was on it, so he went straight towards his 'new wife'.
He whispered a few words to her and Tasha and then left the hall with her hand-in-hand which obviously drew some stares. He entered the employee-only room with Amanda, ensured that they were alone, and asked, "Do you want to go there?".
Amanda remained quiet for a bit and asked, "can I see the note?" he nodded and handed it to her. There wasn't much in it but their presence was requested. The thing was that they had just become an 'item' in front of everybody barely minutes ago, so it was interesting especially when the note was not signed but insisted that both of them answer to the call. Amanda studied the note for a bit and then said, "My day cannot get any worse and I am more curious than you will imagine so let's go."
Kelvin had a feeling that it would not be okay for anyone to see them, so he again made sure that they were alone and used another employee-only entrance. This time they climbed upstairs to the upper floor.
The first thing they saw was that the whole place was bare but a single dining table that had one man who was eating on it. Kelvin glanced behind the man, and he recognised the man who had slipped the note to him standing a few meters from the person eating. His posture showed that he was a subordinate, butler or assistant as his hands were clasped in front of him with his head slightly bowed. With a wave of his hand, the seated man signalled the other, and two chairs were placed in front of him. Taking that as a beckon, Amanda and Kelvin sat down facing him.
He started speaking just as their bottoms touched the seat. "That was a commendable thing you did for the young lady down there", the man wiped his mouth with a napkin and said while staring directly at Kelvin.
Looking startled, Kelvin responded instinctively, "Excuse me?"
Amanda was equally shocked, but she just observed. The man continued as if he had not seen their reactions.
"You did help the young lady, but I do not think that you thought this plan through before commencing it."
"Sir, I-" Kelvin started but was muted when the man raised his hand and said,
[A/N~ Loctovia-2]
"Don't get ahead of yourself young man, let me finish." Then he continued,
"Mitch is a ruthless businessman and you just hindered one of his major business deals which involved Amanda." He turned to look at Amanda directly for the first time and she frowned a bit while she stared back.
"Do I know you sir?"
"Oh, how silly of me," she muttered under her breath.
"Have we met before sir?"
The man just smiled at her but did not reply to the question which caused more confusion to cloud over her face.
He continued by saying, "Mitch is furious now so he has lost his rationality, but he will check for the evidence of this supposed marriage when he calms down a bit because he has never been one to trust anyone's word… not even that of his ex-wife."
Amanda's eyes widened when she realized the truth in the words as did Kelvin.
"But I can help you out of this if you allow me…"
He raised his hand and asked the 'assistant/butler', "Is he here yet?"
"He'll be here in about ten minutes sir", was the reply he was given. The man just nodded and looked at the 'couple' in front of him.
Amanda and Kelvin glanced at each other, and then Amanda asked,
"Who are you and why will you be willing to do this for us?"
"That is a somewhat tough question to answer now, and it is indeed a long story, but I doubt you have that much time." He indicated with his head at the ongoing dinner downstairs. Amanda could have sworn that his gaze turned icy cold when the man looked at where her father was sitting. But it was so brief that she thought she imagined it.
While Amanda mulled over these thoughts, Kelvin studied the old man and thought to himself, "opportunity comes but once. Of course, I need to take advantage of this… in helping Amanda." He convinced himself of this, but, rather asked, "How do you intend to help us?"
"You can register the marriage here, right now, if you'd like." He answered.
"How?" They both asked,
Just then the assistant guided a man in who hurriedly approached them and bowed.
"I'm sorry for arriving late sir," he said, and he looked really flustered as he remained bowed. Then the old man replied to their question, "He is the head of the registry of marriages in Beo city. He will do it for you here, and right now, upon your agreement of course."
Kelvin understood instantly and nudged Amanda, "let's talk," he said and then turned to the old man, "Can we have some time to talk about this sir?" The man nodded and Kelvin got up with Amanda to one side of the room away from their ears.
"Amanda," he started by saying, "I'm going to be very frank with you. In fact, I will never lie to you about anything …ever."
"I have a lot of self-interest in this, and this is an opportunity that I will never let go of without trying. I never knew that this will be how I will get hooked up with you. When I vowed that you will be mine, this was not what I was referring to…, believe me. I am still happy that I got this chance… a- chance to be with you."
Amanda remained quiet as she stared at him, "Amanda, please marry me… officially"
"Be my wife."
