Chapter 14 - Chapter Fourteen

Alzie cursed under his breath. The sun was setting and they were nowhere to be seen. He patiently waited at Cyros hut when he couldn't find them. They should be back by now if they went anywhere. Being out during night was not a good thing at all. The groundlyings come out at night to hunt. Vile creatures is what they were. Humans that lived underground for too long and mutated when the radiation soaked through the ground. Beasts were from human decent as well, but they had assisted the change along. Groundlyings were those who didn't have the help to assist the mutations. They had completely lost all humanity in them. They especially looked nothing like humans nor beasts. They were a complete alien like species. Everyone lived in trees to keep their scent from being found. But Mira was human, would her scent be easier to pick up on? He knew Cyro could take care of himself. One of the many things he admired about Cyro.

He grew restless as the forest decended into darkness. Climbing down he decided to look for them. He'll have to rely on all senses now. At night they could see, but not as well as day time. He sniffed the air and looked for their foot tracks. Trying to trace them in the dark. A loud howling screech sounded into the night air. He knew what it ment, and it chilled his bones. He moved faster hoping to find them before the groundlying could. He came to a tree just in time to see Cyro climbing it. Mira tucking against his chest. Before he could follow suit, he was hit with something solid. It knocked the air out of him as he hit the ground. Sharp razor like teeth and claws coming down on him. He struggled to hold it back as he tried to get up. The ugly creature was strong and vicious. No eyes and a mouth full of hundreds of teeth. It's skin flourecent white, and nearly see through. Blue veins under its leather like skin. Holding the claws back was the hardest. It's damned fingers were as long as its arms. He wrestled the creature, trying to get his foot under it. Placing his foot against its stomach, he pushed and let go of the creature. The groundlying went flying into the darkness. He didn't have much time to get back up as it was already heading back.

He braced himself once again, getting ready to dodge. However, Cyro suddenly dropped from the tree and was now in front of him. Cyro and him both dodged each one trying to distracted the thing. All they needed to do was get one goo swipe of their claws in. The venom would be enough to immobilize it long enough to get away. Cyro had its attention this time. Alzie used the opportunity to slash at it. But was taken by surprise when he heard Mira scream. Up in the tree was another one quickly making its way to her. A thud followed by Cyros scream told him he too had been distracted. The groundlying was bitting down on Cyros shoulder. He pulled the groundlying off, making sure to dig his claws deep.

"Get Mira now!" He yelled at Cyro before tossing the creature aside.

They both climbed up Cyro getting to the groundlying first. He watched as Cyro grabbed its back leg, and yanked it out of the tree. It let out a screech as it tumbled down. Look of horror on Mira's face said everything. A sharp pain entered his back, and tail, before he too was pulled from the tree. He tried to move but couldn't as he gasbed for air. Damn thing got him with its stinger. His vision was quickly filled with rows of teeth. This was his end. He never should have gotten drunk and left them unsupervised. He closed his eyes as it was the only thing he could do. A loud screech echoed again and silence. He opened his eyes to see Cyro standing above him. He was lifted onto his shoulders and carried as Mira followed closely by. They weren't headed to the village. Instead they had chosen to go straight into the ruins. They past through a few before coming to a halt. Alzie still could moved due to the poison of the stinger. He would be immobile for a few days. Atleast till they get him help. They couldn't go to the village at the risk of having the groundlyings find it. Cyro carried him up countless stairs before laying him down.

"Is he going to be ok?" Mira held up a blanket and placed it over him.

"Yeah, his muscles are just paralyzed." Cyro was close by, but he could see him. "I need to get him the antidote, otherwise in a few days he won't be fine."

"Alright, we can make a bed to carry him on." He could see Mira holding his bota bag. She held a piece if cloth to it. Wetting it.

"We? Oh no I need you to stay safe." Alzie wished he could tell Cyro now is not the time to argue.

"Cyro, your hurt. You can't go off on your own and you know it." Looks like Mira might beat him too it. "We can't argue about this. Now let me see your wound." Yep she beat him too it.

He knew right about now Cyro would be sulking at loosing the argument. But Mira was right. They had no choice but to stay together. Leaving even one of then behind would be bad. The groundlyings will be circling the ruins waiting for them to appear. They could use a bird beast about now.

"How are you gonna get help?" Mira was whispering, but he could still hear her. "We can't out run them."

"Well have to travel by day only, and make sure to not leave the ruins till there's daylight." Apparently both need a lesson in whispering. "After that we just pray to make it Tangerine village before dark."

One good thing about being paralyzed, you can't feel the pain. Alzie just sat there hoping for sleep to take him soon. So that he wouldn't have to listen to the two idiots whispering back and forth. It was becoming quiet evident that Mira and Cyro were becoming closer. He didn't want them to get closer, but in this state he couldn't do anything. That left him with the only option to sleep, and do his best to ignore them. He hoped he could sleep the whole time he's paralyzed. Having to have someone clean him up is embarrassing as is. He saw the light of a fire from the corner of his eye. They must be settling down and getting warm. Another plus to being paralyzed, you don't feel the cold. Too bad it didn't make emotional pain go away.
