Chapter 14 - We’re total opposites

Emma was sat with everything she needed out, she'd been early for the second time in her entire life. Ren walked up to her after just entering the room and put her stuff down, they were sat at the back as per usual. Ren was about to sit down after getting her stuff out when Emma looked at her.

"I spy with my little eye something beginning with "A" and ending with "Bitch", any guesses?"

"Well there aren't any mirrors around here, so I don't know what you're seeing." Ren retorted.

They both broke into a smile and Emma uncrossed her arms, she roughly pulled at Ren's hand. This caused Ren to be pulled down to eye level with Emma who was sitting, Emma quickly wrapped her arms around the bent-over Ren, who melted into the sudden embrace.

Emma let go of her nearly as quickly as she had pulled her into a warm hug, she smiled and her face looked kind and gentle. Ren couldn't help but smile back gently, however, her guilt suddenly heightened due to the soft look of the girl in front of her.

"Right, so," her voice suddenly turned into a whisper, and her face flushed slightly, "I'm sorry about yesterday…"

"What was that?" Emma asked with a smirk appearing on her face.

"I'm sorry, okay~ Dayum man let it go~ chill and all that." She turned away and crossed her arms whilst pouting.

Ren was the kind of person who had a hard time apologising, it wasn't that she didn't mean it. She did, she just found it to be uncomfortable and somewhat embarrassing to do it.

Emma knew this and didn't push her any further, she also noticed her slightly pink-tinged cheeks and ears. This made her smile gently once again.

"Anyway, so how was it?"

Ren's eyes shone like stars and she turned back around to face her best friend. "He came up to the stage and-"

The coffee shop was neither empty nor full, the quiet chatter of customers was heard from inside, and everyone seemed to be in high spirits. Drinking and eating whilst doing various things some were reading the news, watching a show, others talking to friends and some were even hurriedly writing up papers or cramming for exams.

Suddenly two girls rushed in and the sounds of violent ringing came from the opening gif the door. The girl that had shoved open the door rushed up to the counter and smiled widely. The woman behind the counter, standing in front of the girl, caught her infectious smile and her face instantly brightened.

She tried to pout and let out a fake-sounding sigh. "Aw, and I thought you were going to get your highest streak today, what a letdown, if only you had come about an hour later."

"Don't be so mean~ I'm sure you missed me, no need to lie~"

Emma didn't feel dispirited at all and could only smile happily. After all, the past few days she'd been unable to come due to the coffee shop closing as she had kept wasting time due to various dumb things. Such as being "locked-in school" yesterday, and finding a cute-looking cat the day before, or even the day before that when she had seen a sale in a nearby clothing store. She didn't even like the clothes they sold, but she couldn't turn down a good bargain. It was 75% off, who could blame her?

"Anyways. Chris, can I get a cappuccino with a blueberry muffin!"

Ren walked up behind Emma who looked back at her and she made her hand go into a fist and she lightly hit the fist against her now open palm.

"And can we also have a coffee, black, with no sugar?"

"I hate coffee-"

"Did I stutter?" Emma smiled warmly back at Ren.

Ren looked at her face and could only sigh. "Is this about yesterday?"

"No, of course not! Do I look that petty to you?" Emma didn't stop smiling.

'You literally have veins popping out of your forehead…' Ren wanted to say, but couldn't. She didn't have energy enough to argue anyway. So she could only sigh. Again.

Chris looked between them and laughed out loud, her beautifully warm and melodious laugh resonated throughout the coffee shop. Everyone seemed to quieten down the slightest bit to listen to her voice more clearly.

"You both seem so close, arguing all the time but seeming unaffected." She looked at her coworkers. "Any tips? Sometimes I get into arguments with our employees and I don't know how to keep them content with their job."

"Ah I'm sorry, I don't really know… we're just kind of special I guess…?" Emma replied tapping her finger on the counter in thought.

Ren shrugged, "Just tell them not to be snowflakes and to get over themselves." She then put her hands into her leather jacket's pockets. Ren was wearing a white top from her favourite band with ripped jeans, black boots and a black leather jacket. Her hair was down and a red beanie was covering her head, she was also wearing silver, dangly earrings in the shape of stars.

"Well, either way, this is a nice coffee shop and the pay is good, right? Also, you're so cool and give them flexibility when they're unable to come in and stuff. So it should be fine, don't worry."

"You're both, like, total opposites. How did you even become friends?" Chris asked in confusion.

Emma grinned at the question and pulled a double peace sign, "Obviously we were so drawn to each other we become best friends right away-"

"Emma was such a pain that the only reason we became friends was that our parents and teacher forced us to." Ren shivered slightly at the memory.

"Forced you? How so?" Chris looked more and more intrigued with every word she heard from Ren.

"It was brutal, like, I never want to do that again in my life. Ew. How dare they do that to us- and so on."
