Chapter 17: Owen's guilt.
Owen's POV
Do you know that wolves can run at 36 - 38 MPH without feeling exhausted? I found that fact amazing when my father, Alpha Noah told me when I was five years old, I always wondered what would happen if we ran at a speed higher than that. I guess today was some sort of an experiment for it. Today, I find out.
I was going so fast that it took the Alpha and his Beta knocking me against a tree to stop me.
At first I felt dizzy and the god damn world spiraled from there. I vaguely remembered my father asking me some really dumb questions.
"Owen! Owen! Are you alright?" Alpha Noah slapped me gently on the face to keep me awake.
I blinked again and then again and I waited for the world to stop spinning. I sat upright and I tried to catch my breath. I could hear my mother approaching us in her wolf form, howling in a way that called to me.
I waited for her to catch up. She was bound to do that sooner or later. I might as well wait for them to do the yelling simultaneously, just to save time.
"Owen! Baby, are you alright?" My mother cupped my face for a second before she took them away.
"He needs water, Mateo" Luna Elise instructed the Alpha's Beta.
I watched as the Beta took off towards the school in search of water for the Alpha's crazy son, it almost made me laugh. They were all treating me like a psycho.
"Are you alright?" Luna Elise asked me again. I knew that underneath the soft exterior was a werewolf so angry and terrified that she could rip me apart but I was beyond caring.
"Can't you tell Elise? I am peachy. So fucking awesome!" I formed a letter 'O' with my thumb and my index finger as I talked.
I saw my father raise his hand to strike me for disrespecting his mate but my mother stopped him and pointed to my nose.
"He's bleeding out of his nose. He ran too fast. We need to get him to the pack's hospital or he will lose consciousness soon, Noah" Luna Else spoke in whispers to her mate.
Noah cleared his throat and barely contained his anger.
"If we bring the stupid lunatic through that field with dozens of pack children watching and taking in what a disgrace he is to…"
I watched my mother place her hand on his and my father quietened down.
"He will be fine. You stopped him on time" She told him. She placed her head on his and it stayed there while they comforted each other.
I watched them, pangs of pain going through me because I know for certain I would never have what they have. I had it and it got taken from me, my hatred for everything that lived and breathed intensified. My hatred for my parents grew ten folds.
I chuckled mockingly and shook my head.
"You both are fucking psychopaths who are just rubbing salt on my injuries. Come on, go ahead. Kiss each other, make love to each other. Rub your stupid faces while I suffocate in my grief!" I yelled in their faces.
I vaguely remembered my father's fist headed for my face before everything became pitch black.
And it was the best thing to have happened to me because I saw her. I saw Emily Sanders and for a brief second, everything was alright.
I was sitting on a fallen oak tree at the spot I found her on that day her uncle beat her to a pulp. She was wearing a green dress and a tiara. She looked every bit as the princess she went off to become.
"Hey stranger" Her voice was loud like usual and she had a cheering tone to her voice.
"Emily girl! What are you doing here?" I asked her and looked away.
I couldn't even look my best friend in the face.
She chuckled. "I have never been one to walk away from that face especially when you need me"
I didn't think twice, I simply placed my head on her shoulder. We must have looked ridiculous since she was half my size.
"Have I told you yet it's a bad idea confronting the Alpha and insulting Luna in his presence, Owen? I mean, dude, you were begging for that punch"
Hearing Emily's voice made me calm and chaotic at the same time.
"I am sorry, Emily…"
"You've said that a thousand times doesn't change the fact that you betrayed me" She snapped at me.
"I am an idiot…"
"Agreed, Owen…agreed. I have to go"
Emily stood up.
I stood up too like a lightning bolt "Are you real?"
She smiled "Am I? You were hit on the head and I am a thousand miles away from you. Do the math?"
"You are…not real" it made me sad.
"But I don't care. I am still going to kiss you"
I almost placed my lips on hers when suddenly I was jolted and boom, I was back in a room that looked like a hospital and my mother's face was the first thing I saw.
"Noah, he is awake!"
"I told you I didn't hit him that hard, Elise. I should get the doctor"
I cleared my throat. I had something to say and I needed to say it.
"I am leaving" I murmured.
"He is trying to tell us something, Noah. Owen, what did you say?" I watched my mother come closer to me and I waited patiently until my father did the same.
"I said I am leaving the pack as soon as I finish high school. I will be applying to the universities outside Astoria and as far away as possible from both of you. I just…I just thought you should know" I turned around and faced the wall.
I felt my mother's hand on my shoulders and I waited for the excuse to come.
"She was not a good match! She had no wolf. We saved you! You are of an Alpha's blood and she was a pariah. I saved you!"
I turned around sharply to face her, my eyes bloodshot and my wolf begging to be let free.
