Chapter 16 - Lovely couples

The ferryman said with a look of pity as he looked at Lucien.

Meanwhile, the expression of the couple changed from weird to one of pity the more they looked at him.

And Lucien who had clearly heard what the ferryman has said gulped his wine faster as he didn't feel like correcting their stupid assumptions about him.

But the three individuals in the boat had taken Lucien's actions as a sign of the ferryman's words striking his feelings where it hurts the most.

"Anyway, don't mind him and just enjoy your day" The ferryman as he began to paddle, moving the boat further and further away from the shore.

And although the ferryman had said such words, it was really hard for the couple to ignore a heartbroken man trying to drown himself in alcohol while sitting on the same boat as them.

But Lucien who paid no heed to their thoughts continued with his actions.

..........

"Huh!!...W…..ho"

"Wa..k..e u..p! D…amn it!"

The continuous screams and irregular movement of a hand pushing against his shoulders were enough to stir Lucien awake as he slowly opened his eyes.

Yet, all he could see were blurring images of a familiar man screaming at him.

"WAKE UP! YOU LOSER!!" The same voice made its way through his ears, but this time, he could hear it clearly even though the screams were beating against his ears drums.

"Shut it! I can hear you okay" Lucien said as he looked at his hand which was still tightly gripping the empty bottle of wine that he had consumed.

Throwing the bottle of wine into the river, Lucien stood up to stretch his body after what seemed like a good nap.

"You bastard, how dare you litter your waste in the Seine river" The ferryman said as he looked at Lucien angrily.

"Will you stop pretending as though you have never taken a wee in the river?" Lucien said as he looked up to the sky, seeing that the stars have already taken their turn in the sky, together with the moon.

"Yawn!! By the way what time is it?".

The ferryman shook his head as he saw Lucien's uncivilized behaviour and thought 'Il n'y a pas d'aide à ce jeune homme, il est déjà une âme perdue'.

And although he was supposed to be angry at Lucien's character, he only felt displeased as with age comes experience, and he already possesses enough experience when dealing with people like this.

"It's already 6::30 pm. You came here and slept for 6 and half hours, even if you had continued sleeping for another 5 hours, I won't really care"

"But you see, you are currently on my boat, and I am about to go back home and rest for tomorrow's work. But I can't do that if I leave you here, can I?"The ferryman said.

'Hmmm… I came here by 1 pm and prepared to leave by 2 pm. Who knew that by the time I closed my eyes and open them, it would already be 6: 30 pm' Lucien thought as he looked around the boat, noticing that it was only the two of them here, he said.

"What about the two couples?".

The ferryman raised a brow and looked at Lucien saying "That is none of your concern. They already left 3 hours ago. And lucky for you, they were the reason why you could enjoy your sleep like this?"

"How?"

"Sigh!! You see I would have thrown you out of my boat since, but the young lady took pity on you and forced her boyfriend to pay an extra fee for you" The ferryman added.

"Which was the reason why I could wait patiently for you to wake up. Yet you looked as though you were planning to sleep there through the night too, which was why I decided to wake up now before you go through with your plan"

"Ohh! So it's like that" Lucien said as he nodded his head in understanding.

Maybe those two lovely couples weren't really bad after all.

"Yes. It happened like that. Now can you leave"

"Alright. I'm going! I'm going!" Lucien said as he made his way out of the boat.

Turning back to look at the ferryman one more time, he couldn't help but ask.

"How much did they pay you that made you allow me to sleep till this time?"

"Around 40 euros" The ferryman said casually as he prepared to dock his boat.

But even though Lucien had heard it completely well, he still doubted his ear and said.

"Say that again".

"I said 40 euros. Don't tell me that you are deaf now?" The ferryman said angrily as he really wanted to leave here quick so that he wouldn't have to deal with Lucien any longer.

'Damn, 40 euros. They really are rich' Lucien thought as he walked away without saying anything else.

"Haaa... He's gone. Thankfully he didn't know that I was given another amount to give to him" The ferryman said as he touched the other stack of cash in his pocket.

Lucien who knew nothing about the money that was meant for him didn't care that he had slept on a boat for 6 hours straight and was now heading to the area he was assigned on a mission yesterday.

This wasn't the first time that he had drunk just to think about something or get a little bit of peace of mind.

But it was just that he had he didn't really expect that he would be out for 6 hours straight.

It would be okay if he had taken three or four bottles, but he had only taken one, and it already knocked him out for half a day.

Maybe he needed the suspension to cool his head and body from all this supernatural bullcrap.

But after thinking of all the things pressing down against his shoulders, his eyes became focused and his gaze became determined once more, as he walked to his destination.
