Chapter 17 - The crime scene

"Taxi!!"

Lucien shouted as he saw the cab coming closer from the distance.

"Where to monsieur?" The taxi driver said as he stopped in front of Lucien.

"Rue de Jacques, s'il vous plaît?" Lucien said as he hopped in the taxi.

The abandoned building he was assigned to yesterday was a 30 minutes ride away from here.

And although he would have loved to arrive there by foot, it still wasn't a big deal if he took a taxi as that would save him some of his time and energy.

Besides, he plans to arrive fully prepared for any surprises, and without his gears and equipment to help him out, he would have to take a more cautious approach.

"Turn to the right" Lucien said as he saw the driver has almost reached the destination.

But the car suddenly halted as soon as it took the right turn.

"What happened?" Lucien asked.

"I don't think we can go any further than this. Look, the road is blocked" The driver said as he pointed at the windshield of the car which showed that the street was blocked by a police signboard and yellow tape.

"Hmm…" Lucien watched the view with interest as he saw a policeman headed towards their way.

"Where are you guys heading to?" The officer asked as he looked through the window of the car.

"We were just about to arrive at the second block after taking this turn" Lucien answered immediately as he wanted to know what was going on after seeing the various police cars surrounding the area.

"Well, that won't be possible for now, so I would advise you to take the other road as this one is restricted for now" The policeman replied.

"What happened here, officer?" Lucien asked with curiosity in his voice making it look as though he was just an ordinary civilian hoping to hear something interesting after looking at what seemed to be a crime scene.

"Well, I am not supposed to tell you this, but…" The policeman said after some careful deliberations.

"But I am sure that it is already in the newspaper considering that this happened yesterday evening" But the policeman couldn't stop the urge of releasing some info after looking at Lucien's curious expression.

Besides this would earn him some bragging rights in front of an ordinary civilian.

Bending down to talk so that his whispers could only be heard by the two men in the car, the policeman said.

"You see, how do I put this?…. Yesterday a 112 call was received by the police station after someone from this neighbourhood had reported a corpse lying in the middle of the road"

"The corpse had multiple gunshots on the head and on its back too. And the injuries caused by the bullet wound were done by one hell of a gun considering how bad it was" The policeman thoughts wondered after he remembered how disfigured the corpse looked.

"Yeah, I think I read this in the newspaper today. And after some policemen were sent to investigate, it was said that they were suddenly attacked out of nowhere with three of them found dead while the other two were presumably held as hostages" The driver added.

"There have been rumours running about lately that this was done by a group of cultists who had taken refuge in the abandoned building over there, and that they were currently planning a sacrifice which was why they took the policemen as hostages and killed the rest".

Lucien who heard all this suddenly had a solemn expression on his face as he thought about how he had forgotten such an event that has taken place yesterday and was as big as this.

But soon, he will find the truth about the matter.

"Yes, but I think that the policemen might be all dead as they have been missing since yesterday and no call have been made to us, so we think that this was done by a serial killer and not a group of cultists"

"After all, there are already reports of various murders and suicide attempts in this neighbourhood" The policeman said as he gestured to the taxi driver to take the other route as he didn't want to reveal anything else.

'They are just ordinary civilians after all, so there is no need to scare them that much by telling them' The policeman thought as he saw the taxi reversing and slowly driving away.

Meanwhile, Lucien who saw that the policeman was out of sight suddenly stopped the driver and walked out of the vehicle.

Paying the driver his money, Lucien immediately sprinted back towards the crime scene, while making sure that he wouldn't be easily spotted by the various officers and police cars surrounding the abandoned building.

Quietly moving under the yellow tapes that sealed off the area, Lucien stealthily manoeuvred his way to the two-story abandoned building by using the car as a blind spot until he made his way to the fence.

Jumping over it as he landed on the other side, with a slightly loud sound, Lucien momentary halted his steps to avoid the situation of him being caught.

"What was that?" A policeman who was guarding the abandoned building asked his fellow officer "Did you hear that too?".

"Hear what? I didn't hear anything" The other policeman furrowed his brows as he wondered if his colleague was trying to play a prank on him.

"You know that I am still scared shitless from what had happened here right. So if you are planning to play a prank on me, I will advise you to stop it" He added.

The other policeman shook his head as though disapproving what he had said to be a lie.

"I did hear something, and it came from inside there" The policeman pointed in the direction of the abandoned building as he said.

"Well, I didn't hear anything, so it might just be your mind playing a trick on you" The other policeman said as he didn't buy his words and immediately wrote it off as a mistake.
