Chereads / Mafia Man's Lover / Chapter 24 - Challenge

Chapter 24 - Challenge

Dad was surprised when he saw us come to the station, He had already believed that grandma won't do otherwise when he told her not to allow any of us step outside our house.

But sorry to disappoint dad, We couldn't just let you and Mom deal with this on your own, What are we families for?.

Grandma had this "We are here to help out and there's nothing you are doing to stop that" look on her face as she held both me and Andy by our hands.

Dad approached us hurriedly when he saw us by the entrance of the building to make sure we didn't come any further inside, He didn't want us to be seen by those officers as it was a very tense moment as my mom was still being questioned.

And seeing us here might also add to the tension she is feeling already. "Mom!" He called out to granny as he held her both of her hands, "Yes son." Grandma answered back.

"I thought we agreed on not letting the kids out of the house especially Kira." He said while looking back to see if any of the cops working on the case of the expensive stolen jewelry was around or behind us.

"If Kira doesn't say what she knows then there's no guarantee that Sarah would be released from the case and her name would be cleared." My grandma stated trying to make my dad see the sense in that.

"But what if what Kira saw wasn't the truth?" My dad said pessimistically, "So do you believe that your wife is a thief huh?" Granny said slightly raising her voice.

"N-no I don't, I am just scared it's only going to put Kira in a really bad situation, We have our hands full already with her mom's case so we wouldn't want to involve Kira into this." Dad said in whispers signaling to my grandma not to raise her voice.

"I saw them dad, I am not lying you have to believe me." I told him really hoping he would let me speak to the cops about what happened last night.

"Okay, If you feel that's the best solution." He finally agreed sighing, "Then let's go, we have no time to waste." Grandma said hurriedly.

As we were about to go one of the crime departments where my mom was being questioned, I saw Mrs Jones walking out of the building with a man in a suit walking beside her.

She was wearing a sunshade glass and was dressed smartly and classy, She carried an expensive handbag and held her head high as she walked with hurried steps across the lobby.

I immediately forgot where we were heading to as I dashed in her direction to my family's surprise, I just couldn't help myself as I thought seeing her might make things easier for my mom.

She was surprised when she saw me and was momentarily shocked by my sudden appearance, "Kira?" she called my name in confusion mixed with annoyance. Her face wasn't smiling as she looked different from yesterday.

It wasn't the "All smiley and kind" Mrs Jones I was seeing right now, It was the "I don't give two cents about you" Mrs Jones I was staring at.

But that didn't bother me as all i was thinking of at the moment was that she could help my mom out since she too was aware that my mom was busy cooking with the chefs throughout yesterday.

"Mrs Jones, I am sorry to have stopped you like this but I have to, I know you are aware of my mom's accusations and I also believe you know she is innocent and she wouldn't do such a thing, So please if you would just give a word about it am sure she would be released." I pleaded with her but she gave me a disapproving look as she shook her head.

"Seriously!?" She stated taking off her glasses as she stared at me coldly. "You want me defend a criminal?" She asked and scoffed eying me ridiculously.

I was taken aback by her words, My dad and grandma came towards our side as to know the reason why I approached her like that.

They haven't met Mrs Jones yet so they don't know who she is.

"After all the help I rendered to your mom this is how she pays me?" She added with a bitter smile, "N-no ma'am m-my mom w-would never do such a thing!" I stuttered as tears started to well up in my eyes.

"She never for once thought about that, She always praises you all the time and she also respects you ma'am." I continued.

"Oh really?, But you know what?" She asked taking a step closer to me and looking me directly in the eyes. "My former cook was more than that but she did what she did anyway, So don't give me that bullshit about your mom being the nicest person on Earth girl." She said chillingly.

"Excuse me miss, I am so sorry for my daughter's behavior that was rude of her." My dad said as he grabbed my arm and urged me to apologize.

"No I don't need her apology or her mom's, A criminal is going to get punished anyway, Now get out of my way as I have a lot of places to go at the moment." She said and wore back her glasses as she walked away with her heads high making the click of her shoes louder than before.

I was speechless with all what she said and leaned against my dad as I sobbed.

"Don't cry my dear, Was that Mrs Jones that your mom is working for?" He asked and I nodded still sobbing.

I was feeling so sad at the moment because the only person who is capable to prove my mom innocent just condemned me and my family. It was just too painful to process.

"Your mom will get out of here Kira, We are going to do that, We are not going to depend on any body okay!" Grandma assured me with a smile in which I nodded in return.

"I see you finally brought your daughter for her questioning Mr Houston." A cop said approaching us as we were about to leave our spot.

My dad only nodded and led us away to where Mom was, He didn't want any officer confronting me. When we got to the room that my mom was being questioned, We saw her sitting on a chair in front of a table which has another chair behind it but there was no one sitting on it.

It was only my mom in the room, She placed both her head and her cuffed hands on the table, She was brooding.

The officers discussing at the entrance of the room approached us when they saw us. I recognized two of them out of five, One was the leader of the team that came to arrest my mother.

"You finally brought her." The man said as he inspected me curiously. "Yes I did sir, She knows the truth of what happened yesterday and I hope you would listen to her and use whatever she says as a lead to investigate further on the matter." My dad said to them.

"Well then, Let's see what she has to say." The second man said as he led me to another room for questioning.

I was asked to sit down when I entered the room, This room was just like the one I saw my mom In.

I was given a bottled water to drink but I couldn't as I was nervous on what was going to happen. I was to be questioned by a female cop, She looked strict and smart in her uniform and it is all shown in her facial expression that she doesn't tolerates any nonsense.

I swallowed hard and began to fidget when I saw some cops bringing in a polygraph, Not like I was going to lie at some point but because this was my first time being questioned.

I could feel my palms getting sweaty already, The lady sat down on the chair opposite mine settling her pen and jotter on the table.

She looked at me in the eyes for a moment before asking what my name and age was, "Akira Houston, I am fourteen." I told her. "Okay Akira... Let's begin." She said.

"I hope you know what this is." She asked referring to the polygraph that was on the table beside us. "Yes I do." I replied as I pressed my hands together so tightly to stop myself from shivering.

"Am glad you do, And I trust you know what it is for and why we brought it here." She asked and I nodded. She smiled when I did, "My name is Jane by the way, I very much hope you will cooperate with me Akira." She said and I nodded again.

I didn't want to say anything yet because I was still trying to calm down my shaking nerves, I didn't want her to notice my nervousness.

Jane never took her eyes away from me, Which was greatly unnerving because her blue eyes were as sharp as a dagger. She looks like a very experienced cop that nothing fazes.

I was told to relax as the lie detector device was placed on my head, This was going to be a challenge for me as I can't seem to calm down despite the fact that I was going to say nothing but the truth.
