Chereads / Mystery of Jack / Chapter 3 - What happened Last Night

Chapter 3 - What happened Last Night

It was past midnight in the Jackson family's home. Buck, Amelie's father, had overheard his daughter sobbing in her room. He assumed his princess had returned home safely, but his heart fell when he heard his daughter sobbing. Nothing is more valuable to him than his princess.

He knocked twice on her door and asked whether she was okay.

"Please don't worry about me, I'm fine."

"What are you talking about? I'm your father, so it's natural that I'm worried about you."

"I'm okay Father, really"

She assured.

"All right, Princess, know that if you need anything, Father and Mother will always be there for you."

He reminded his daughter "Goodnight."

It took a lot of strength to ignore his girls' wailing a while back. But he understands that insisting on it will only enrage her daughter.

But if only he knew that was going to be their last conversation. He should have paid attention to her sobs instead of ignoring them. He should have stormed into her room and wrapped his arms around her because Amelie hasn't been seen since that night.

When I got home last night, I went straight to bed. My brother was staring at me as I awoke. It's a little irritating that the first thing you see when you get up is your brother's ugliness.

"What?"

I scowled at him, furrowing my brows.

"How did it turn out?"

He enquired sarcastically.

"What do you mean?"

"Oh, brother come on, your date night with Amelie, of course."

"I told you it wasn't like that, and since when have you learned about such things?"

"Do you have a girlfriend already?"

I murmured, my voice trembling with suspicion. I was surprised as to where he got the idea for date nights from.

"I don't have girlfriend and I'm already 15 so of course I know things like loveeeeee."

I sigh, talking to him first thing in the morning would only make his head hurt, so he just ignores him while I went to bath. As a poor family, they can only bathe three times per week at most.

When he entered the kitchen, he noticed his father getting ready to leave for work and his mother busy in the kitchen. On the other hand, I ripped a piece of bread in two and handed it to my brother.

"Father, I'm going to the neighborhood to see if I can find job there."

"As long as you're treated decently and get home at six"

he said with a feeble smile on his face. As he smiled, I noticed regrets and anguish in his eyes. I understand his desire to provide for his family, but I don't intend to be shielded for the rest of my life. I want to help them because I've always envied those who had it easy in life.

His brother proceeded to New Dawn Academy after devouring the bread, but as for him he has already stopped going because doing so would only add to his father's burden. Though assisting Amelie in her studies under Professor Anderson was beneficial to him, but it was not enough for him to make a livelihood. After all, before recommending a student to become a professional, the professor mainly seeks for someone that is fascinating.

Some students do not need to attend school in order to graduate if their professor recommends them. And if you have enough mora to pay the lecturers, that's even better.

However, a poor family like the Morgans must attend school, but progressing and graduating is difficult, which is why his brother, Max, must excel in school in order to attain his goals.

He observed a gathering of police officers on the corner of the streets as he was retracing his route from last night back to the town. It was then that he noticed the shambles on the floor, A dead body with dried blood splattered in every area. Such events could only be the work of a heinous murderer. It looked like a wild animal did it, but how could a wild animal do it in the middle of the city? It's completely illogical. What happened the last night?

As he passed by a group of police officers, the old man who was talking to them, I guess making his story about what happened the night before, strangely looked at me. Then he furrowed his brows, as if he was recalling something.

When he pointed at me while talking to the cops, my heart fell. I instantly turned to glance around to see if anyone was around. When I noticed that no one was around, I realized he was pointing at me.

They started walking in my direction while I stood there, waiting for whatever business they had with me. When he arrived at my location, the old man asked.

"Boy, were you the one who bought my bread last night?"

This old man reminded me of the bakery owner from last night.

"It was I, sir."

I responded cautiously, looking at them both.

"Well, I saw you sprinting away from this corner last night when you bought bread from me."

"Sir, I was hurrying home last night because it was getting late, I was with a friend last night, but we parted ways because she had a lecture from her professor."

He got shivers thinking about what had happened to him the night before. Last night, I felt someone following me, surely it wasn't the murderer? Right? I was just passing through here the other night. Would he have been in there instead of that dead body on the floor? His expression began to alter as he realized he had just survived being brutally killed.

The middle-aged cop was staring at me closely, as if he was checking to see if I was telling the truth. His body is well-built, and he exudes the authority of a police officer. He smiled at me at that point, as if he had already decided that what I had said was correct. Wouldn't that be that he can actually tell if I'm talking the truth or not? What exactly is he? Are you a mind reader? When the police officer spoke to me, I was dragged back in my thoughts.

"You don't have to be tense; we're just asking questions. You're the last person we'd expect of being the killer. This is not something a young lad like you could accomplish."

the police officer replied with a smile.

Jack wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry, he just felt like his body was being judged, but it was true that he couldn't do such heinous things.

"Yes sir, you can ask me anything. I'm glad I could assist you sir."

"HAHAHA such a wonderful young man, you can just call me Desmond" he laughs loudly, startling Jack.

This Police Officer has an unusual personality. As they frantically investigated the dead body, Jack observes two more police officers, whom he assumes are under Desmond's command.

"My name is Desmond Kaspien, and I'm a Deputy Chief of Police who is investigating this crime scene. Do you mind if I sit with you for a while and talk? I'll get you a cup of coffee."

Jack was surprised. Is his comment so important that they should take it seriously? I mean, I just informed him last night that I was just passing through. He's strange. Nonetheless, he accepted his proposal, after all, he couldn't possibly refuse it. Everything has been strange since last night, like though unusual things have been happening to him.

They sat in the stall when they arrived. Desmond orders two cups of coffee and a croissant, making Jack's tummy growl.

He didn't say no when Desmond presented it to him. Who could say no to a free meal? Desmond asked a question that almost made him choke on his hot coffee while he was sipping his drink.

"So, why would a young man like you wondering to the dangerous alleys at night?

"Well, Sir Desmond, my friend insisted on bringing me along last night since she needed to meet with her professor. We also parted ways after I accompanied her to her professor's house because my father had ordered me to get some bread."

"What is your friends name?"

"Amelie sir. Amelie Jackson."

The police officer's next statement astounded me, and I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Amelie Jackson? We received a report from her parents that she went missing and that they haven't found her since this morning"

"What?"

I unconsciously yelled at him, my eyes widening.
