The wait now was even longer than the whole night. Heather watched as the people before her went into the room one-by-one and came out with their results. Most of them failed, only one had passed so far.
Her hands were sweating and her heart was pounding. She was at the front of the line now and when that door opens, she was going in next. 'No...no I can't die. I have so much to go back to, May, Aunt Lucin. I have to live for my parents, I have to accomplish the goals they couldn't accomplish before they left' she just couldn't imagine herself leaving this world just yet.
'Click!' the door opened, the next victim was thrown out and she was asked to step in. She was visibly shaking as she went inside the room. She stepped into the den and was either leaving with a privilege to life or a death sentence. The fate of the young heiress was in the hands of a stupid test she had no clue about.
She entered the room, glancing around nervously. It was a little dark as compared to the outside, It was also large and she saw a weird machine at the corner. She looked over questionably at the man who asked her to enter. The man's face was straight with any emotion. 'Step into the machine in front of you' she heard from the background and gasped. ' I won't repeat myself' she hesitantly walked towards the machine still looking around but she was not able to see the person giving instructions.
Her hands were quivering as she opened the door of the machine and enter it. The door was transparent so she was able to see through it. She focused her eyes to the other end of the room where she saw some shadows. She looked closely and recognized Mayo comfortably sitting with a glass of wine in his hand and to the other side was Derek? He was sitting with one hand on laptop infront one him. There was another shadow further in the end but before she could concentrate on it- 'Take two steps back' he ordered. So Derek was the one giving orders? 'Don't' waste my time' he snarled and she stumbled backwards.
'Please listen to me-' 'Shut up. Whatever you have to say, has nothing to do with me' he silenced her immediately and without a warning he switched off the machine and Heather felt severe electric shock. She screamed her lungs out, the pain was unbearable. The test was to last for 1min 30 sec so she was meant to go through 90 seconds of electric shock.
'Stop.' a calm deep voice said and the machine was turned off. Heather staggered backwards almost falling down when the machine was turned off, she tried to regain herself from that massive pain. The test was stopped halfway through? 'Lift your head up' the same voice commanded. She tiredly lifted her head. 'What's your name?' Her vision was blurry but she could see that it was neither Mayo nor Derek that asked the question. 'Don't' waste my time.' 'H-Heather' she mumbled still struggling with breath. 'So Heather or whatever it is. Better shut up, and not wake my dog, or you at just put him back to sleep, understood?' the voice was without any element of emotion whatsoever.
Heather was totally dumbfounded, how on earth was she supposed to bear so much pain silently? She bit her in frustration, she really wanted to cry, it was just too much for her. 'Understood?' 'ye-yes' she muttered with her head down. 'Start again' he ordered making her eyes widen.
Without further waste of time, Derek turned on the machine right away. The pain was even more severe this time. She bit on her lip so hard she was bleeding. She endured ending pain without making a sound. Tears couldn't even come out of her eyes, they just filled her eyes.
After the painful 90 seconds, the machine when turned off and Heather slumped to the ground lifelessly. She hit her shoulder and her head hard on the ground. Couldn't breathe for a few seconds, her body was reliving the pain and her eye sight was even more blurry than before.
She saw someone walking towards her, he was wearing all black, but not suit. He was tall and muscular. The figure seemed very familiar to her but she didn't remember where she saw it. Her body was giving up on her but she tried to move away from the figure even if it was useless.
He opened the door going closer to her, the closer he got the more restless she became. He got to her and squatted infront of her but she couldn't she see his face clearly because he crowded her and it was dark. 'Why does your name sound so familiar' he said in a sloppy deep voice with his eyes squinted. She looked at him confused, she didn't know him? When did she- No!! It was him? She widened her in disbelief looking at him.
She recognized him now...the things she did that night started rushing back in her brain. She gulped breathing heavily, if he recognized her her, she was doomed. 'What? Are you scared?' he asked mockingly. ' Well it's nice to see that people still feel scared in ARC. Don't worry Princess, give it one day, and you'll seize to feel anything' he concluded, got up and left the room.
As soon as he left, a man came and grabbed her hand. He dragged her on the floor and threw her out of the room. She was scanned and the result said 'PASS.' Normally she supposed to breathe a sigh of relief but Heather was numb. She became numb immediately after that statement, she literally black out. All that was stuck on her mind was the possible meaning of his statement. '...you'll seize to feel anything...' Now she could only wonder whether being alive was not a worse punishment than the sentence.
