Chapter 4 - Gleam

"IT IS QUITE AMUSING TO SEE YOU PEOPLE, CREATE PROBLEMS AND THEN SOLVE THOSE PROBLEMS AS A MEAN TO PASS YOUR TIME..." The silhouette says with a smug tone.

Me: "What else do you suppose we should be doing..?

It's not like the Being who created us has really gave us any objective..."

Silhouette: "Always so quick to blame others...

Did you ever try and reach out to the Being..?"

Me: "What do you mean..."

Silhouette: "Humans are all about problem solving right..?

Why don't you people try establishing communication with your creator..?"

Me: "Do you think God is a service provider..?

Blasphemy..!"

Then I proceeded to give him a lecture on why what the silhouette said was profanity. The next moment I realized, I was seating on a wooden bed.

The thing that woke me up wasn't a person, that'd be too luxurious for my predicament. It was the freezing cold and the dripping water of the underground dungeon, that woke me up. "My, how the tables have turned..!" I retorted to myself.

I stood up and went to the bars. There was a jailer stand guarding me. I asked him what time it was. The look he gave me, made me sorry for myself. However I still insisted, so he said it was midnight.

My internal clock was messed-up. And honestly who could blame me! I have been in here for about 2 weeks awaiting to be put on trial. And it was night time for me since. I went back and sat on the bed. "Wonder how Aliza and the others are doing..." I asked myself.

The last I saw them was in front of my chamber when I was being taken away. Aliza, Troy, Naila, Rosa and Barbara was arguing with the constable. Aliza was on the verge of tears. I gestured them to stop. Our country's army was notorious for it's strict rules and harsh punishments. The act of challenging a superior's authority could sentence them up to five years of military confinement. It'd royally suck to see my squad being dragged into this.

Anyway I laid back down and started thinking. Starring at the ceiling I noticed the spider on the wall laid eggs. I wonder who the father is.

As I was so curiously investigating it I heard the sound of a lock opening. I was the only prisoner in the entire section so someone must've came for me. Who could it be. I knew no visitors weren't allowed until the trial is over.

The bar opened and I saw the face of someone I didn't thought I'd see.

Me: "Must've took you a lot to come see me down here...

How have you been Nolan..?"

Nolan: "Jack you know I would've never done it, if I had a chance.

I-

Me: "It's okay man..!

I get it...

I know did something I shouldn't have...

And I'm not going to out my blame on anyone for me current state..."

The last line might or might not have been inspired from the dream I had. Anyway we both sat on the bed and discussed about everything that's going on outside. And he was not so optimistic about my situation. Anyway I didn't let that bother me. I have been careless since the day I was born. I have been scolded numerous times for that. And I got out of many tough situation because of that too. So I am, who I am for the better or worse. Anyway about three hours and several apologies later I was able to make Nolan go. He gave a watch and note from Aliza to me before he left. After the guard locked the door back, I opened the note...

"I know things are tough right now. But trust me everything is going to be fine. Stay strong.

P.S. I love you..."

I put the note under my bed and laid back down to process all the information I gained. The jury board for my court-martial wasn't announced yet. But from what Nolan said it seemed like the Judge was going to be Premier Varshavski. That made my chance of getting a favourable sentence less then what I'm comfortable with. I started running possible scenarios of my way out of this mess.

I heard the lock open again. I was pretty irritated at this point. Every bloody time I try to focus on something, someone comes along and ruins it. What's going on today?

Norman: "Mind if I interrupt your sulking colonel..?"

The middle-aged man had such a bright face that I could see it gleam even in a dark room. And the smirk on his face was almost giving away his surprise.
