Zane was displeased to see Ruby. It was the first time he felt an intense dislike for her as if she were his adversary rather than his mate. It caught him off guard. It also brought back memories of Lucas telling him Ruby was not his mate. He didn't believe it at the time. He was starting to believe it now.
He wanted to avoid her and walk away. He, however, stood there firmly with his shoulders straight.
Lucas and Cecilia sneaked away as they saw Ruby approach.
"Zane…" Ruby took his name, looking into his eyes with longing. Her voice was shaking. Her face reflected worry and pain. She seemed nervous as well. "How are you feeling? Do you have any pain?" She reached out to hold his hand.
Zane stepped back, his face scrunching up with annoyance. He didn't like to see her, let alone speak with her. He turned aside, showing his unwillingness to answer her.
