Scarlett knew the rapist would not stop. He had to be caught. The rape victim was Brook, a twenty-year-old female that had been jogging in the park. While jogging on the hiking trail through the bushes, someone grabbed her and placed a cloth over her nose and mouth. Brook was lying in the park naked. She was discovered by a woman walking her dog in the park. Emergency Medical Services were notified and carried Brook to the hospital. Scarlett's visit from Dinah left her believing that a serial rapist was on the loose. Scarlett goes to the hospital to visit Brook and get answers to assist her in finding the rapist. Brook was heavily sedated. Scarlett could only ask her questions. Scarlett asked, "Have you ever seen the man before?" Brook replied, "No, I did not see him that time. He put a cloth over my mouth and nose. I do not remember anything else. I woke up in the hospital." Brook was unable to provide Scarlett with any information.
Scarlett went to the scene of the crime to look for clues. She discovered a white cloth lying in the bushes two feet from the scene. Scarlett picked up the cloth and placed it in a bag to send to the forensic science lab. Forensic science, also known as criminalistics, is the application of science to criminal and civil laws. On the criminal side, during criminal investigations, as governed by the legal standards of admissible evidence and criminal procedure. Forensic scientists collect, preserve, and analyze scientific evidence during an investigation. Forensic scientists testify as expert witnesses in both criminal and civil cases and can work for either the prosecution or the defense. Forensic science is the use of scientific methods and processes in crime solving.
The lab determined that the rag was soaked with chloroform. The chloroform was used to render Brook unconscious so she could be moved off the hiking trail in the bushes. Once in the bushes she was beaten and raped. Exposure to high concentrations of chloroform may cause convulsions, coma, and death due to respiratory failure or cardiac arrhythmias. Individuals who survive acute exposure to chloroform may develop hepatic dysfunction and renal damage several days later. Chronic inhalation of chloroform may cause hepatic damage. Scarlett continued to search the area for the Brook clothes. Law enforcement like to collect clothing because it is potentially a good space from which to get evidence. When the rape victim enters the emergency room, the clothing is taken as evidence. The hospital and law enforcement are left to figure out how to produce replacement clothing for the victim to leave the hospital. Scarlett finds Brooks' clothes spread all over the woods near the park. The clothes were delivered to the crime lab for evidence.
Scarlett woke up to the spirit of Tamar standing at the foot of her bed. Tamar began telling Scarlett about her half-brother, Amnon, and fell desperately in love with her. He became so obsessed with her that he became ill. Tamar was a virgin and knew that he would never have her. Amnon went to bed and pretended he was ill. When his father came to see him, Amnon requested that Tamar come and prepare his favorite dish for him. When Tamar arrived at Amnon's house, she went to the place where he had been lying. She baked his favorite dish for him. When she sits the dish before him, he refuses to eat. Amnon then requested that Tamar bring the food into the bedroom and feed him. As Tamar was feeding him, he grabbed her and demanded that she go to bed with him. Tamar cried "No my brother! Do not do this to me! Do not be foolish! Such wicked things are not done here. Where could I go in my shame?" Amnon would not listen to her, since he was stronger than her. He raped her. Suddenly Amnon's love turned to hate, and he hated her even more than he had loved her. Amnon snarled at her to "Get out!"
Tamara cried "Sending me away now is worse than what you have already done. Amnon would not listen and requested that he be thrown out of his house. It was a custom in those days for virgins to wear long beautiful robes. Tamar tore her robe and put ashes on her head. Then, with her face in her hands, she went away crying. When David heard what had happened, he was terribly angry. He hated Amnon deeply because of what he had done to his sister. Amnon attended a festival, became drunk and was murdered for raping Tamar. Scarlett knew that she had the visions because the rapist would be killed. Scarlett received a call from Colonel Andrews to report to the Sunset Strip Medical Facility. A young woman was admitted to the hospital with various injuries. The woman's name was Dinah. Dinah had been attacked and raped in Cathedral Panoramic Park. Dinah was a young college school student. She had enjoyed a day in the park with friends. She had visited the Cathedral in the middle of the park. Her history class had been studying medieval architecture. The Cathedral was the perfect place for her and her friends to see medieval architecture firsthand.
Dinah and her friends had enjoyed a day in the park. All the girls had met in the park early that morning. Late in the evening, before the park closed, Dinah was walking to her car. A man approximately five feet tall with blonde hair grabbed her and held a cloth over her mouth and nose. He pulled her into the woods, beat, and raped her. Dinah immediately reported to the hospital where a rape kit was completed. The kit was sent to the crime lab. The items were evaluated for DNA.
Scarlett walked into the office and had a déjà vu experience. She was standing inside a house, which was the Sigma Gamma Rho Fraternity House at the Local College. Fraternities are social organizations at colleges and universities. A form of social fraternity, they are prominent in the United States, Canada, and the Philippines, with smaller numbers existing in France. The members of the fraternity were sitting around a table talking about the rapes that occurred in the park. The Fraternity believed the rapist was targeting young college students. They believed that it was the responsibility of the fraternity to protect the females at the college. The fraternity believed that the rape of the college student must be revenged. The rapist must be killed. The Fraternity agreed to start staking out the park to catch the rapist. The park was an off campus hang out for the females. They visited the park every day to walk and exercise. The Fraternity started walking in the park every afternoon in hopes of discovering the identity of the rapist.
Scarlett visited the park to observe what was happening. She could be lucky enough to discover the identity of the rapist. Scarlett receives a call from the crime lab. The DNA did not match anyone in the Data Base. This was a rapist that had never been caught before. Scarlett knew that if the boys at the Fraternity caught him first, they could kill him. Scarlett knew she had to hurry and catch the rapist. The Celebration of Friends Festival at the Park was scheduled for the upcoming weekend. It was a festival that was celebrated by people in the community. It was the day to gather your best friends and enjoy a day in the park. Food vendors prepared foods made in the medieval area. Dark bread is made from rye grain. Stews are made from peas, beans, and onions. Many desserts are made from berries, nuts, and honey. A competition was held for the best tasting medieval bread. The bread had to be made from rye grain. The only ingredients that could be added were ingredients available in the medieval period. The winner of the competition received a blue ribbon and bragging rights. All through the day, the crowd could enjoy Medieval entertainers, including Jesters that wear brightly colored clothes and eccentric hats in a motley pattern that performs a magic show. There were comedy shows that used physical humor. Performers in masks and costumes would dance all through the park. The day was a celebration of food, music, entertainment, and friends.
Later in the evening was the major tournament. Friends would sign up to compete against each other. There was a series of events that had to be completed. A team consisting of four members would compete against each other. In every event, the loser will be eliminated. The events were tennis, jousting on horseback, paintball, chess, checkers, horseshoes, hammer throwing, arm wrestling, running, and the battle of the brains. The battle of the brains was the last event to be played. The team that could answer the most questions correctly about the medieval period in history would win the tournament and receive a prize of one thousand dollars. As the sun began to set, the light show would begin. There was a laser light show. The laser uses tiny moving mirrors; a single beam of laser light can be moved so fast the human eye no longer sees the individual beam. The audience sees fans, cones, tunnels, or cascades of beams that fill the air. The laser lights were set to music. The light show was a favorite for children and adults. At the end of the laser light show was the fireworks and the singing of the National Anthem. The park was closed to minors after 11:00pm.
Midnight was only the beginning of the party for adults. The moonlight dance began. It was an opportunity for the adults to dance to live music. There was food, drinks, and a contest to enjoy. The Best Costume was awarded to the couple that represented the medieval period. The Best Dancers award was given to the couple that could dance the best. Couples entered a contest to be the King and Queen of the dance. The couples were judged by dress and dance. Each couple would dance on the dance floor and be judged for the originality and performance of the dance. The couple would be judged on how the dress complimented the dance. Each couple was given a number and the audience would submit the number of the couple they voted for. At the end of the dance, the King and Queen will be crowned and given a prize of $1000. The park rented out camping spaces, RV hookups, vendor spaces, and charged admission to the park. The funds from the festival were used to maintain and update the park for the entire year. Scarlett was afraid that the news of the rapist in the park would decrease the number of people attending. Over 200,000 people visited the park on the weekend of the festival.
Scarlett enjoyed the weekend with her family at the festival. The children look forward to it every year. After the weekend was over, it was time to return to work. No one was raped during the festival. Scarlett decided to visit Ms. Daisy. Ms. Daisy invited Scarlett in to have a cup of tea. While sitting at the table, Ms. Daisy, began telling her she was worried about Susan. Susan had been working late and was very tired. Ms. Daisy wanted Susan to go to a doctor but she refused. Scarlett agreed to talk to Susan and determine what was wrong with her. Scarlett talked to Susan. Susan worked at the Ruby Night Club. Susan said Scarlett Brook was my friend. She heard a group of men at the night club talking about rape. They believed that Brook deserved being raped. She was stripping every night at the club, teasing the men. Strippers are stigmatized as morally bankrupt, lacking self-respect, so not worthy of respect. Constant judgment, often from people who had never been inside a strip club, left a stripper excluded from normal life. The male-dominated society typecast women into virgins and whores.
We are socialized to think of people's behavior in a linear way. If you are a stripper and consent to have your body objectified on a regular basis, then she must be open to the possibility of complete violation of her body as well. Peoples view of women's actions as independent and not necessarily indicative of some other aspect of their lives extends outside of the issue of rape to many smaller concerns, the most familiar of those being the tried-and-true idea that if a woman dresses a certain way, dances a certain way, or flirts with too many different men, then she must be a slut. These assumptions have ruined reputations since time immemorial.
When women call and treat other women like a hoe or slut in public, it opens the door for men to do the same. Women help to create a culture of assumption that establishes – especially in terms of sexuality- damaging and incorrect ideas about the implications of other women's behaviors. This can lead others to act out against marked women by speaking unkindly about them, shunning them, or in extreme cases, raping them. By focusing on the fact that the victim is a stripper, we can lose sight of the most main facts of the situation. She is a woman, a human being who has been through a traumatic experience and is worthy of our deepest sympathy and support. All women should be treated the same regarding rape, regardless of their profession.
Susan confided in Scarlett that she wanted to quit working as a stripper, but she would not be able to afford the medicine that Ms. Daisy needed it. The medicine for Ms. Daisy was taking cost more than $1500 a month and she would have to take it for the rest of her life. If Ms. Daisy missed even one dose of the medicine, increasing the chance of having a reflection of the kidney. Daisy's life depended on the medicine.
Susan knew she had to find a way out of the sex industry before something bad happened to her. Susan could not tell Ms. Daisy how she was feeling and made Scarlett promise that Ms. Daisy would never find out she was working in the strip club. Ms. Daisy thought she was attending school and working long hours to attend college. But the truth was Susan was working two jobs to take care of Ms. Daisy's medical needs.
Scarlett is awakened by the spirit of Joline standing at the foot of her bed. Joline is a fifteen-year-old virgin that was raped. Joline began to tell Scarlett what happened to her. She was at home in her bedroom studying for a test by candlelight. Mr. Goodman, in his forties, who lived across the field, raped her. Goodman waited on the edge of the farm until Joline's father and mother had gone into town for a church meeting. He went into her bedroom and raped her. Joline was a virgin and was afraid to tell anyone. Months later, Joline became extremely sick in the morning. Her mother took her to the doctor for an exam. Joline was pregnant. When they arrived home, they told her father. He was furious. Joline then told him she had been raped. Joline was not pledged to be married. Goodman was required to pay fifty shekels of silver. Goodman was forced to marry her because he had violated her. Goodman could never divorce her. A shekel is an ancient Near Eastern unit of weight. It was first a currency in ancient Turkey and ancient Carthage, and then in ancient Israel under the Maccabees. The modern currency unit used in the State of Israel today is officially known as the Israeli new shekel. Joline died during childbirth.
Then Susanna appeared to Scarlett. Susanna would go into her husband's garden to walk. Two elders used to see her every day and they began to desire her. They perverted their minds and turned their eyes away from looking to heaven or remembering righteous judgments. Both were overwhelmed with passion for her and did not tell each other. Both men departed and returned and confessed to each other their lust for each other. Then they arranged for a time when they could find her alone. Susanna wished to bathe in the garden because it was extremely hot. The two elders hid themselves and were watching her. She instructed her house cleaner to shut the garden doors so she could bathe. When the house cleaner had left, the two elders rose and ran to her. The elders said, "Look, the garden doors are shut and no one can see us, we are in love with you; give your consent and lie with us. If you refuse, we will testify against you that a young man was with you, and therefore you sent the house cleaner away." Susanna signed deeply and said, "I am hemmed in on every side. For if I do this thing, it is death for me; and if I do not, I shall not escape your hands." Susanna chose not to do it because she did not want to commit a sin in the sight of the Lord.
The next day, when the people gathered at the house of her husband, the two elders came, full of their wicked plot to have Susanna put to death. The people sent for Susanna. She was a woman of great refinement, and beautiful in appearance. She was veiled, the wicked men ordered her to be unveiled, that they might feed upon her beauty. Her family and friends and all who saw her wept.
hen the two elders stood up in front of the people and laid their hands upon her head. The elders said, "As we were walking in the garden alone, this woman came in with a house cleaner, shut the garden doors, and dismissed the house cleaner. Then a young man, who had been hidden, came to her and lay with her. We saw this wickedness and ran to them. We saw them embracing, but we could not hold the man, for he was too strong for us. She would not tell us who the young man was. The people believed the elders and condemned her to death. After they were examined, and an investigation into all the facts took place, the elders were convicted of bearing false witness. Susanna was innocent and the elders were put to death for bearing false witness against her. Scarlett knew that Brook had been raped and justice must be found.
Scarlett receives a phone call from Colonel Andrews requesting her to report to the hospital. Holly Williams, a college student, was in the emergency room. Holly was distraught, agitated, and crying. When the nurse attempted to talk to her to find out what was wrong, she started sweating, trembling, and her heart was racing. She started vomiting and having chest pains. The doctors determined that she was having a panic attack when questioned by the nurse. The doctor prescribed a mild medicine to calm her down.
Scarlett arrived at the hospital and Holly was acting disorientated. Scarlett asked her simple questions, and she could not answer them. When asked if she wanted a glass of water, Holly responded, "I don't know." Holly wanted a rag to wash her hands. When she was given a wet rag, she continuously washed her hands. Scarlett noticed that Holly's hands were turning red from being rubbed so hard with the washcloth. Scarlett took the washcloth away from her and Holly continued to act like she was washing her hands. Holly was obsessed with washing her hands. The Emergency Room Doctor recommended that Holly be evaluated by a psychologist. When the psychologist walked into the room, Holly began screaming "Please do not hurt me! Please do not let him kill me! Someone please, please, I need help!" Tears filled Scarlett's eyes as Holly begged for help. They knew she had been through a traumatic experience. They had no idea what had happened to her, and she could not tell them. Scarlett assumed she had been raped. Her clothes were torn. Holly would not let anyone touch her. The nurse and doctors could not examine her. When a man walked near her, she started screaming.
Holly became medicated and fell asleep. Scarlett instructed the nurse to notify her as soon as Holly awakened. Scarlett knew Holly needed psychological evaluation. Scarlett wondered if she would ever be able to tell them what happened. Scarlett went to the park to see if she could find any evidence. The other rapes occurred in the park and this one did also. When Scarlett arrived at the park it was filled with college students. Scarlett recognized members of the fraternity that she saw in the déjà vu experience.
Scarlett knows that the boys were trying to find the rapist. She talked to Tommy, who was walking in the park. Tommy was a member of the fraternity. The fraternity was walking in the park to keep an eye on the college girls. Scarlett asked Tommy "Do you know Holly Williams?" Tommy responded "She is my girlfriend. I was supposed to meet her, and we were going to walk in the park together. She never showed up." Scarlett told Tommy that Holly was in the hospital. Tommy immediately started saying, "I will kill him, I will haunt him if he hurts Holly. I will not stop until I find him. The police had better get him before I do." Tommy took off running toward his car. Scarlett knew Tommy was headed to the hospital. She hoped that Holly would tell Tommy what happened.
When Tommy entered the hospital room, Holly was asleep. Tommy loved Holly and did not leave her side. Tommy stayed in the hospital with her until she woke up. Holly saw Tommy and started crying. Holly calmed down after seeing Tommy. It was someone she knew. Tommy held her in his arms and promised to protect her. Tommy promised to never leave her side. After weeks of therapy, Holly confided in Tommy what had happened on that tragic afternoon. Holly was walking in the park, and she heard someone screaming in the bushes. Holly walked over to the bushes and a man with a teardrop tattoo under his eye pulled her into the bushes and raped her. The teardrop tattoo would help Scarlett to find the rapist.
