Chereads / The Magians: Resurgence / Chapter 12 - The Irregulars

Chapter 12 - The Irregulars

"It is possible, and to know how to do it, you have to become The Irregular. Have you ever heard about The Irregulars?"

"Don't you mean The Dreamwalker?" Jake raised his eyebrows, confused. His father told him that someone with an Irregular Brain was called Dreamwalker.

Hearing Jake's answer, Sonia half-chuckled. "You can say so. Dreamwalker is indeed part of The Irregulars, but besides The Dreamwalker there are more, such as Transporter and Worldmaker."

"So Dreamwalker is not the only one," Jake muttered.

"That's right. You can say that The Irregulars have their level of complicacy, and Dreamwalker was the easiest technique grasped by The Irregulars. Unlike The Dreamwalker, The Worldmaker was more difficult to comprehend thus their existence is rarer. By the way, why did you ask? Do you have something to tell me about it?"

"No, it's nothing... I'm just wondering because I learned about Dreamwalker a few days ago, and I think it would be cool to become one of them."

"You think so?" Sonia smiled, shifting her suspicious look with a mysterious smile. "I don't want to scare you but becoming The Irregulars isn't easy as it looks. You must consider that great responsibility follows inseparably from great power." Sonia quoted.

Jake's eyes lit up hearing those words, He finished wearing his shoes and stand up. "Thank you for your words, Mrs. Sonia. Anyway, is there a way or a method to verify if someone has an Irregular Brain?"

"As far as I know, there is still no medical procedure or measurement to determine it. It is a unique power, a blessing from The Gods, maybe The Gods didn't want us, mortals, to uncover all their creations."

"A blessing, but could be a curse when used in evil conduct," Jake mumbled to himself, thinking how dangerous it would be if he meet an Irregular as an enemy.

Hearing such a wise statement from the youth in front of him, Sonia smiled. "We should be glad that The Irregulars in our kingdom choose to serve righteousness, and became justice enforcers, deliberating peace and harmony to the society."

"Is there any Irregular in our Academy?" Jake asked with curiosity in his eyes.

"There are, but I couldn't tell you who they are excluding the one we should know, The Academy Master."

"Yeah, he's definitely one of the Irregulars. That must be the reason why he becomes the chief disciplinarian of the students!" Jake exclaimed in disbelief.

"You guessed it right. Despite being busy and having a lot of work to handle, The Principal is a down-to-earth person as he wants to look after the students closely. He is a modest I could say."

Jake nodded in approval, however, his chest tightened. He had to avoid The Irregulars and make less contact with them to keep his secret leaking. However, he didn't think that there were more than two people in the Academy.

"Okay, I guess I need to go back to class first," said Jake respectfully and walked.

But, before Jake took a step out of the room, Sonia made him halt. "Wait, you forgot the permission paper."

"Ah, that's right." Jake got back and took the permission paper to enter class, and then move out.

Looking at his wristwatch, Jake decided to go to the canteen instead because it was not worth studying when 20 minutes were left before the class was dismissed.

In Arcadia Academy, there were six hours of study in the class or lab, and there were two recesses between the periods. Academy's Canteen served food on menus during those recesses, and students didn't need to pay, excluding dessert and beverages outside the menus like soft drinks.

Arriving at the canteen hall, Jake approached the lunch lady behind the counter. "I'll take my lunch," said Jake in a soft tone.

However, the lady was intrigued and asked, "are you skipping your class?" The lady looked solemn. "I can't serve you anything, wait until the recess."

Jake sighed and took his permission paper, telling the lady that he was from the Academy's Medical Clinic.

Knowing the paper in Jake's hand, the lady nodded while frowning in approval. "Which menu do you want?"

"Menu B is fine," Jake replied.

After getting his lunch, Jake brought the stainless steel food tray and took a seat at the corner table.

The Academy gave a lot of concern about the nutrition of the students. So the canteen served healthy foods. Balanced and healthy foods could help students increase energy levels, improve their ability to cope with stress, and increase concentration in Academy.

However, four years ago the Canteen had sold soft drinks to satisfy the students, to make them enjoy their life in Academy more, and Jake was the example as he bought a soda pop as the former Jake usually had.

"Ah, not bad... pretty good actually," He commented on the soda before continuing his lunch.

A moment later, the bell rang out, indicating the class was dismissed. Jake cursed in his thought as he didn't finish his food yet. The problem was none other than Chloe. She was from class A which was the nearest class to the Canteen. He gobbled up.

Hearing the noise that students made as they walked to the canteen hall, Jake moved his chair and faced the transparent wall in the corner of the hall. Countless eyes were targeting his figure, wondering how can be a student came early and half-emptying his lunch?

Jake realized the situation but he chose not to be bothered. However, Jake heard footsteps that were getting closer and closer. His thought turned into chaos in an instant, hoping that the one approaching him was not Chloe. However, he quickly realized how foolish his thought was.

"Aren't you too fast, Jake? Considering your class distance from the Canteen, you shouldn't be here, half-finishing your food, right?"

Coughing, Jake was shocked to see Chloe sarcastically talk to him before sitting beside him.

'Fuck me! How did this girl even know it was me sitting here, enjoying my first lunch in this world!'

Jake turned his head, gave her a fake smile, and gulped his soda pop, cleaning his throat. "Nice deduction, but I got my reason for that, you know?"

Chloe shrugged her shoulders, looking at him with half eyes open, "tell me then," she asked.

"I met Mrs. Sonia," he replied with a flat tone.

"For real? What happened?"

"Nothing much, just fatigue. I forgot to have dinner and breakfast. So this is my lunch."

Hearing Jake answer, Chloe snorted and pat him on the back. "I know you are foolish, but I don't you ignorant to this extent."

'This girl is always testing my nerves. Even if you are beautiful, I don't tolerate anybody who insults me!' Looking at Chloe with his eyebrows borough together, Jake put his spoon on the stainless steel tray and got up.

"I finish."

With a single glance, Jake moved out and brought his tray back to the left side of the hall where students place the empty tray after finishing their food. Jake was almost retorted, but he realized that the former Jake was a quiet nerd who gulped down his anger every time Chloe made fun of him.

Without saying bye to Chloe, Jake escorted himself to the class, leaving Chloe baffled.

At 2:00 am the class was dismissed. The students were happy that the lesson ended. However, not all students went home directly. Some of them had scheduled to attend extracurricular activities, including Jake and Chloe.

Although they took different clubs, they still had the same place to practice which was The Gymnasium. Walking down a staircase, Jake was startled to see Chloe waiting for him in front of the main building.

"Are you okay?"

It was the word that came out of her delicate, yet annoyed face. Jake knew what is going on, Chloe was concerned because he paid no heed to her before at the Canteen.
