Fifty more years later:
Dylan silently sat by her bedside, waiting for her to wake up. Her wheezing sound was loud.. it was so loud that he was not able to close his eyes in peace.
Red bloodshot eyes peered at the hospital bed. His finger gently played with her wrinkled hand.
She was not just a sister. She was his mother, his father, and everything he knew of. To see her laying on the bed unmoving was the worst feeling ever.
"You promised to be with me forever, right sister? Why would you get sick… you could have had the operation year ago. Then you could have….. You won't be in this situation then," he mumbled, kissing the back of her palm. "are you so desperate to leave me just like the others? Why won't you stay with me…. why do I have to live forever.. Watch the people I love fall sick…."
"dy..lan…" Rue whispered.
He sat up straight. "Rue… can you see me?" he hopefully looked at her.
She gave him a small smile.
"Does it hurt?"
"no…" Rue held out her hand and touched his smooth cheeks. Fifty years… fifty years had passed, but Dylan never aged.
His bright blue eyes were vibrant even in this dull hospital and his blond hair made him look like an angel that had fallen from heaven.
Her baby brother has grown…
But He was forever stuck in a twenty-year-old body while she aged. She was eighty-one… and her body was failing.
The thought of leaving her precious brother alone…she couldn't imagine it..
Her heart ached for him.
Poor Dylan went through a lot. In his young years, his wolf was totally out of control. Every full moon it will go berserk. But after his twentieth year birthday, the wolf just disappeared. After grieving for a long time.. it went to sleep. It went silent.
Living for fifty years without a mate was torture… but living an eternity.. could her brother handle it…
'How can Dylan live like this… my poor brother?'
"it's… all my fault…." she silently cried.
"shh…" he kissed the back of her hand again. "it's not your fault. Its fate….. I was not meant to have a mate.. Just like you."
"No no… Nico was supposed to be with you..living eternally. Loving you eternally… but it's all gone….because of me… I intervened with the plan. I…. tried to change it.. That's why…"
The heart rate monitor started to beep loudly.
"Doctor!!!! Doctor! Where the fuck is everyone?" Dylan cried and ran out.
Rue held out her hand. "I've.. done my… best….. Dylan… I've wronged you… I hope.. I hope you can live well… I hope you find happiness…"
By the time Dylan came back, the beeping had stopped. The hand that had reached for him was limp.
He could not breathe… standing there like a statue, he just looked at her skinny face. His sister. His only family member… his loving sister was gone…
After years of suffering from heart complications, she finally let go.
He was finally all alone in this world. Even though he was surrounded by thousands of Wolves he would forever be alone.
Something in him broke that day….
Years ago, his wolf had given up hope and grieving…. And that moment he lost his sister, he lost his hope and his happiness.
The doctors placed her hand on the bed. "I'm sorry Alpha.. she was old.. Her heart could not hold on.."
"You could have operated on her again.. You could have saved her....." he knelt down by the bed, silently sobbing.
"Her heart was not strong enough…"
With tear-filled eyes, he glanced up at her once again.. hoping and praying she would wake up and say it was a joke…
For hours, he sat there.
"Alpha.. we have to move her…" the nurses and the doctors removed all the devices and tubes attached to her.
"Don't!... don't touch her!!"
His growl shook the whole building. Small chips of the bricks fluttered down from the ceiling.
The doctors trembled under his gaze.
"no one… no one touches my sister…I.. I will do it," he lifted her up in his arms. Her body had gone cold and stiff. Reality hit him at that moment. She was not coming back. Just as his mate.. She too had left him.
He could not hold back his sob.
He carried her out the door. Fresh snowflakes fluttered down, landing on her cheeks and lashes.
They did not melt…
"Alpha…. The burial spot is…" one of the wolves whispered.
He simply glared at him.
They all knelt down forcefully and could not move again.
"I know what I'm doing.."
Dylan walked into the familiar street and towards the small house. It was the old witches' house, and it was also his mother-in-law's place. His sister loved hanging out here.
He had restored it for her.
The snow was shoveled by one of the wolves and fresh flowers were blooming in the small greenhouse he had built for her.
Seeing all this, his heart was in anguish.
Softly sniffling, he opened the door and entered the house.
This place had too many memories. When he was twenty, his wolf finally gave up on grieving. It simply went silent… that day he felt like another part of him was gone. He was simply living like a doll.
Rue had taken him to this place… she said that this was the witch, his mate's mother's place.
Just stepping in here gave him immense comfort.
From that day on, they usually dropped by here with Rue.
"now… here we are… this is your favorite spot, right Rue… will you rest in peace here."
He gently placed her down.
"I'll make sure to keep this place warm for you. You can sleep well.." he caressed the black circles under her eyes.
His sister worked hard. She did so much to protect him.. she tried her best to mitigate the effects of the war.
She really tried…
The poor woman never rested well..She gave up everything for him.
He moved two steps further and squatted down. With his nails, he tore the tiled off.
Little by little, he started to dig into the stiff soil.
He gently placed her in the ditch..
Dylan ran out and plucked the flowers from the greenhouse.
He placed them in her hand and in her hair.
"You still look so pretty….. Hyacinth… your favorite…ill bring more every time we get a bloom here."
The final moment came…
It was time to say goodbye.
Dylan tried his best to smile. "You were the best and I love you sister. Without you, I would not have survived. Don't blame yourself for Nico… don't think about stressful things.. just be happy. In your next life, I pray to the moon goddess that you would be born in a loving family with a lot of siblings,"
Suddenly, his hands froze. The world was not peaceful. it was still plagued by war. It was still in ruins, left behind by the nuclear war.
It still had not ended.
"I will end the war for you.. I will make sure everything is peaceful okay,"
One last time, he kissed her forehead.
It was his final goodbye and a promise.
He buried her well and placed beautiful flowers on top of her grave.
Now he had a purpose in life.
"Let's go end the war,"
