Chapter 26 - Post-Action Report

Adams and Dean were meeting privately in one of the coffee shops near the dormitory. It was Monday and the news of the successful rescue operation had gone through his ears thanks to Andre involvement. He only said that to his inner circle, in particular, Orion and Adams.

"Sir, anything that I should know?" Dean still didn't have any idea why he was here in the first place.

"I have two news. Bad news and good news, which one that you want to hear first?" Adams asked.

"Good news first, I guess?" Dean asked.

"Alright, I told our battalion commanding officer, you can guess who, about your rescue operation. He praised you, of course and you'd have his word in case you want to enroll into something in the future," Adams said.

"Thank you, sir. That's very kind," Dean answered.

"I'm being serious here, Dean. The battalion commander said you should get a medal for your action if it was on the book. However, he also told that your action shouldn't be public at all. So, you wouldn't get any glory or praise, but deep with us all, we want to thank you," Adams added.

"That's very fortunate, sir," Dean said.

"I do have something to ask, Dean."

"And that is?" Dean asked.

"What is your motivation?" Adams asked.

"My motivation is because there is a Menkaid involved in my assassination attempt. I fear that this is something bigger to come if I don't do anything about it," Dean answered.

"I see. Well, the investigation team from the AIPD appreciates the addition of witness. However, the Menkaid involvement is something new. We'll keep this in mind," Adams said.

"What's the bad news?" Dean asked.

"Mick has gone missing exactly last night, further strengthening your suspicion."

"Oh, I see."

With Mick missing, Dean was relieved and disappointed at the same time. He was relieved that the threat for him was gone. There would be no risk of further danger from the only person that had a grudge on him. However, he was also disappointed that he had ran away from the law enforcement.

Then again, since his status was as a witness, there wasn't even anyone watching over him. He was a pussy, even worse than Dean initially thought. The guy just ran away once his alibi crumbled towards the ground. Still, it was a good progress even though it didn't go as well as expected.

"How about his parents?" Dean asked.

"In questioning as well, they were called by the military tribunal to say what their involvement were." Adams sipped on his coffee.

"Probably just money. I think?" Dean asked.

"Yeah, but who the hell have enough money to rent as many people as the one that you shot at the park? It even made into the afternoon news, Dean. We're lucky that your face wasn't recorded." Adams added as he finished his coffee.

"Going so soon?"

"I have other business to attend too, good afternoon, Dean."

"Good afternoon, sir."

Dean was left alone in the coffee all by himself. If he was alone like this, there would be one figure that appeared like a damn ghost. This time, Myra suddenly appeared in front of him while sipping coffee.

'Goddamn it, why are you always appearing like a ghost?' Dean protested since it happened too often that it surprised him a lot. And it was not in a good way.

'You haven't distributed your stats point, Dean,' Myra said.

'Well, it can wait, can't it?' Dean asked.

'Yeah, but don't forget it. You are wasting potential by doing that, Dean,' Myra said.

'I know that. However, Myra, look, I don't mean to say this, but you haven't given me anything necessary. Most of the situations I have been in, I am saving myself more often than you saving me,' Dean gave his own opinion.

'Even the energy shield is not helping you?' Myra used her bargaining chip.

'Not really, but only to some extent. You do realize that my ballistic vest save me more often than your energy shield that is only a one-trick pony?' Dean asked.

'But…' Myra uttered.

Dean sighed, 'Well, let's just say I rather enjoy your company to a certain extend.'

'Really?' Myra smiled.

'Let's just say, I'd be willing to choke you to death right now, but I can restrain myself right now. That's how our relationship is,' Dean replied.

'Damn, you're something else, aren't you?'

Dean sipped on his coffee. Truth be told, Myra was a good companion. Even though she didn't exactly give him the power beyond of his imagination, she gave Dean an idea of what he should do next, and for that, he was thankful.

And yeah, she got a point. He should have distributed the stat points earlier even though he didn't know what he should do with it. He opened the status menu and looked at it. It seemed that his level had gone up as well.

Name: Dean Barnett

Dean distributed 45 of his points into aptitude and the rest into strength. He immediately felt that his body was a little bit lighter, but it took him quite a while to notice it. Still, the noticeable difference was this heat that suddenly enveloped his whole body.

'Any explanation for the heat?'

'Magical power is starting enveloping your body, that's the explanation. Anyway, congrats for your upgrade in power. Still, you don't even have the bare minimum power for my promise,' Myra sighed.

'Well, that's it, I think?' Dean uttered.

'For now, that's it.'

'Mira, what makes you think that I will use you after Mick. The danger is done, isn't it?" Dean asked.

'Well, who knows? You might want my partnership in the future, but well, like I said, who knows?' Myra said.

'You don't spark too much confidence in me, do you?'

Myra giggled. 'Perhaps?'

Myra disappeared into thin air again as Dean completed his business with her. Now, it was only a waiting game on catching Mick. Still, without him in the academy, life would tad a bit peaceful than before. Still, his accomplices needed to be found too.

There was no way Mick did that all alone. There might be an accomplice that also had a grudge on Dean. Still, Dean would be the last person they should be worried about. The law enforcement would create a much bigger problem for them and Dean would gladly watch from afar.
