Chapter 12 - Trying to Rattle The Cage

Three days later, Friday afternoon, it seemed that the academy was not aware about the assassination attempt. There wasn't even any questioning. Dean came back to the academy just for the sake of testing the water.

"Damn, man, sorry for your loss, but it's fucked up, I'm not going to lie," Orion said.

Pretty much, Adams was having the headache of the century as one of the juniors below of his command almost got assassinated by unknown individuals thanks for the bogus scholarship letter.

The letter wasn't in the military archive. However, the paper, the letter, the envelope, the stamp, even the signature were all real, not forged. It made Adams worry that this was only a warning of bigger thing to come in the future.

Dean, on the other hand, wanted to rattle the cage. At the very least, he wanted to put Mick on the edge if he somehow saw him. The whole school was unaware of this and it only circulated on Adams' group.

Aveline was pretty much under Adams' spotlight, particularly because she was the one that noticed the letter first. Scarlet was cleared since she didn't know anything about the letter nor knowing that there was something odd with it.

"Who did you piss off, though?" Scarlet wondered.

"I don't know. Mick? I don't think I do anything enough to make someone murder me, unless…" Dean looked at Orion with intense suspicion. Adams' squad immediately looked at Orion. Orion and Dean were indeed in small quarrel on each other.

"What? Dude? Me?"

"Nah, of course not," Dean smiled after putting his friend on everyone's crosshair.

"Still, Mick, huh?" Scarlet added her statement.

Dean was quite famous of being two things. One was for being the only F-rank in the class while the other was being the guy that stood up to a well-known bully from the second year. The latter probably was the reason why someone wanted him to be gone, and it was not a good sign.

It seemed the combination of being weak and not being able to use magical spell really gave the window of opportunity for Mick to assassinate Dean. Judging from the time frame, Dean was more than aware than he had prepared for this for quite a long time. The office building, the letter, and the interviewers were the sign of preparation.

The Menkaid appearance also supported this claim. The Menkaid that stayed on Earth usually worked either as criminals or mercenary. Either way, both were never good in the grand scheme of things. Facing one while unarmed was basically a suicide request.

"I don't get it, why Mick?" Andre asked.

"I heard his voice during the assassination. He was the one that put two on my chest," Dean answered.

"Damn, that's something new. Did you tell the authority about this?" Orion asked.

"I did and he's being questioned. However, I doubt this will be easy, S.O.B has a lot of time to prepare his alibi. He will get away unsratched. I need something better to put him down," Dean said.

"Don't worry, we will help," Orion said.

"Alright, thanks mate."

"Yeah, don't worry, we got your backs," Scarlet added.

At least, he had his friends backing him up. Students who were used to be enrolling in the military-ish school before the military academy to stick together, this group was no exception. Hopefully, their supervisor, Corporal Adams, could help them sort things out as well.

The group slowly dissipated one by one as they became busy with their own business. Scarlet went back to the dormitory since she had to clean her rifle alongside with her shoes. Aveline also requested her help to clean her rifle as well since the questioning for Aveline was longer than the others.

Orion went to the dorm earlier since he had a business of her life, he said he wanted to go "woman hunting" or whatever that was. Orion was handsome, there was no doubting that. However, romance-wise, he could be too bold for someone of his age. And somehow, he did attract the attention of a slightly older woman. Well, he was a year older than Dean, there was that.

Andre had a tutoring to do with the teacher to improve his academics. Basically, it left Dean as the only person in that room. He waited for Corporal Adams to come to the class and gave the testimony to him.

Whether the outcome was good or bad, Dean needed to deal with it. He waited with his phone on his head and his eyes providing 360 degrees view of what was going on around him. For once, Dean didn't feel comfortable sitting right next to the window even though it was bulletproof.

An hour later, Adams finally came to the empty classroom with nothing on his hands. His face didn't signify any happiness or any gladness. He was equally pissed as Dean at the moment. Dean sighed as he looked at the expression of his supervisor.

Adams pulled a chair and he sat down right next to his desk, "Damn," Adams smashed his desk, "Motherfucker got a solid alibi."

Dean wasn't even surprised, "What was it, sir?"

"He was in his apartment according to all of his servants. The testimony was consistent too. Damn, he planned this all along, didn't he?" Adams was equally confused as Dean was.

"Sir?"

"Sorry, sorry, I know you two have a beef, but I never think it will went this far. Well, I hope this thing gets solved fast. In the meantime, Dean, how's your chest?" Adams asked.

"Still wrapped in bandage and put together with sutures staples. So, I'm fine," Dean answered.

"Fine? Dean, don't push yourself too hard, alright? I know for a fact that the healing spell in your body is the only reason you're moving right now because I don't think anyone can be this mobile after a heart surgery, even in this age of medicine," Adams uttered.

"I will, sir."

"I'll have to go, thanks for your cooperation."

Adams left the room. Dean packed his backpack after this, he felt that he wanted to take a stroll in the afternoon after all of this mess. It might be able to clear his head from the distractions outside of his head.
