Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 (I'm Not Your Slave)

After a couple of hours of lectures, it was finally lunch break and Kyle headed straight to the cafeteria to have his meal. While he was patiently waiting for his turn in the queue, a sudden tap landed on the back of his neck.

Although Kyle felt it coming due to his sharp senses, he chose not to evade it however he already knew who attacked him without turning around to look back.

"So you finally decided to return back to school trash? I heard you were in an accident and we actually thought that you were dead." A voice said from behind Kyle.

Kyle turned around to look at the face of the voices that spoke. He wasn't surprised to see the face of the person he hated the most in the entire school. The one who spoke earlier was the leader of the group.

Jake was well known both within and outside the academy because he was the leader of one of the most dominating student crews.

Students forming a crew was a popular trend at the present time, it was considered as a way to distinguish capable or talented awakeners from those weak or inept, and as a result all gangs were ranked based on their overall class, wealth and power in order to differentiate them from weaker ones.

Fortunately, Jake never lacked any of these qualities. He was an heir to an elite family and he was also a very talented metahuman. As a result nobody dared to mess with him out of fear of the consequences of that action.

Eventually, Jake and his two best friends, Jason and Jeremy, who didn't fall short of Jake's standards, formed their own faction. By utilizing both their awakened powers and their status, they were able to dominate their victims and make their faction the only one unrivaled by any other.

Undoubtedly, Kyle was among those victims that were most affected by their tyranny. However, he had the worst of it. This was mostly due to the impression that they had of him as well as the fact that he was also one of their classmates. This made him an easier target than most others.

In the past he was forced to buy their lunches, do their homework, and help them cheat in order to pass a test or exam. He was also their personal boxing bag whenever they felt like punching something.

"Are you thinking of us as retards? You didn't really expect us to believe that story you fabricated about you being hit by a truck in order to ditch school," Jason said in anger. His tone was accusatory, implying that Kyle was trying to deceive them.

"You weren't expecting us to make things easy on you because of that made-up excuse? Hope you enjoyed your three-week off because you won't be taking anymore breaks soon punk."

"Come over to the table to take my lunch order before we finish this." Jake ordered before walking towards one of the empty tables along with his friends and other lackeys.

"No, I won't." Kyle boldly refused, something he would have dreamed of doing in the past. Taking orders like this in the past had been a sign of servitude, and Kyle was no longer willing to accept this role.

Jake abruptly turned around to look at Kyle with an unbelievable expression on his face. "What did you just say punk?"

Kyle slowly walked towards Jake until he was standing one foot away from him and repeated himself. "I said I wouldn't come take your order and I will never do such again."

"Hahaha...." Jason laughed. "This guy must have gotten mad or else he wouldn't have the balls to talk back to us. Seems like you were actually hit by a truck." he stated.

"You heard that Kyle? I would like to believe what Jason said and that would mean that you didn't mean what you just said." Jake emphasized as he glared down at Kyle.

Kyle smiled. "Don't flatter yourself. I'm no longer willing to be your pawn like I was in the past. So if you want lunch get in line for it and pay with your own money, after all you've got loads of it." Kyle taunted.

"This bastard." Jason raised his fist to hit Kyle when another voice belonging to one of the school security guards suddenly interjected.

"What is the matter here boys?" The tension suddenly dissipated when the school guards walked closer to the scene.

"There is no problem at all. We were just welcoming our friend back to school after surviving a terrible accident and we were also wishing that he doesn't experience another one soon." Jake calmly explained while still maintaining a deadly eye contact with Kyle and a frown in his face.

It was an obvious lie that the security guard was aware of but he wasn't inclined to dig deeper into it. Instead he would just do his job of keeping everything in order.

'Okay, that's enough, you guys can finish this later. Because of you all, the queue is temporarily blocked.' The security guard instructed them.

"We will see you soon pal, there is going to be a celebration for your return." Jake declared before the walked out of the cafeteria with his goons.

"I guess you are just too stupid, as usual." Jeremy who had been keeping his silence, finally spoke before he followed his friends out of the room.

"I'll be waiting." Kyle responded just before Jeremy walked out of the room.

Kyle returned to the queue and bought lunch as he had planned earlier and ate his meal heartily despite the stares and glares he was receiving.

This was a situation that was to be expected as a result of his actions against Jake and crew. There were only a few people who could stand up against them like he did earlier, However the looks he was receiving from the audience weren't that of admiration but disdain.

Jake and his crew might be tyrants but there was no way that they would choose to support Kyle who was an outcast over them. Besides, Kyle had a reputation for being a weakling so they weren't convinced that he would be able to take them on.

Kyle exited the cafeteria as soon as he was done with his lunch and returned to his classroom.

He walked to his desk and sat at it quietly. A few minutes later the bell rang and the next teacher walked in.

The rest of the day passed with no further drama. Neither Jake nor any member of his crew returned to class after the incident in the cafeteria. Yet, it was no surprise to anyone since these acts weren't rare.

When the final bell rang, Kyle picked up his school bag and quickly left the school premises. However on his way home Kyle could sense that he was being followed. Therefore, rather than taking the path that led to his home he took another turn into an alley by the road.

He walked a bit deeper into the alley before he stopped and turned around. "This place is sufficiently discreet to avoid any disturbance, so everyone can come out and let's get this dealt with as soon as possible."

Several faces emerged from the shadows and Kyle was able to recognize them as members of Jake's crew.

Kyle guessed that they were also sent by Jake to beat him up for the embarrassment he caused in the cafeteria during the break. It was expected but Kyle was surprised to see that Jake wasn't handling this business himself because Kyle knew how much Jake hated being traffled with.

The fact that you were able to detect us despite our hiding our presence is commendable." One of the crew members said.

"Where are your leaders? I was actually expecting them here rather than you pawns?" Kyle asked after he scanned through the crowd and was unable to find any of the leaders.

"You stupid fool, do you think you are big enough to make any of our leaders deal with you directly? Anyway, if you want to see them that badly, we have been ordered to bring you along with us to meet them." Another crew member responded.

"That's disappointing and here I was expecting a more lavish party but I guess I will just have to make do with just you guys. Let's make the absolute most of this." Kyle said with a wicked smile. He was also determined to teach them all a lesson and also get his revenge for those years they tormented him.

"You don't know what's coming at you and we plan to make you regret ever offending the three bosses. At the very least you know how to pick a proper spot for the occasion."

Kyle's face curled up with a wicked smirk. "It is truly the most ideal spot for the event but I didn't choose it in your favour, so let's get this party started already."
