Natasha closed her food stall earlier than usual. This is because she spent most of the day fixing the damages that were a result of the fight that occurred the previous day between Kyle and the thugs.
Additionally, she was planning to go to the market and buy the groceries they were lacking at home so that she could cook Kyle a more nutritious meal. Ever since he was discharged from the hospital Kyle hadn't eaten a proper meal. This was due to the lack of ingredients, which made it difficult to prepare a good meal.
Natasha decided to make up for it and surprise Kyle with his favorite meal. She headed straight to the market immediately after locking up her stall. After she was through with her shopping she anxiously hurried back home so that she could make the meal ready before Kyle returned from school.
When Natasha was about to enter her apartment a voice suddenly called out to her. She turned around to look in the direction the voice came from to see a familiar masculine face walking closer to her.
Although the person walking closer had a malicious look on his face, Natasha still patiently waited for the person to get closer to her. She then exchanged pleasantries with a friendly smile.
The two conversed for a couple of minutes before handing over a letter to Natasha which she didn't seem too enthusiastic about but she had no choice but to receive it anyways.
The man said a few more words to Natasha after he gave her the letter before turning around to walk away. Natasha's mood dampened after her conversation with the man but after a few seconds she put her worries aside and entered her apartment. She pushed her thoughts back to her plans of making Kyle a delicious meal which lightened her mood again. Natasha proceeded to enter and closed the door.
Few moments later, Kyle arrived home and opened the front door. When he entered, the soothing aroma in the air made him realize that Natasha was also home, which was unexpected. He strolled past the living room towards the kitchen but an open piece of letter on the sofa caught his attention.
Kyle approached the sofa and picked up the letter to read. His face turned sour as he read the contents of the letter.
While Kyle was still reading the letter Natasha suddenly came out of the kitchen carrying a large dish of the meal she had been preparing in her hands. She was a bit shocked to see Kyle standing in the living room, her attention shifted to the letter Kyle was holding in his hands.
Natasha sighed in disappointment because she didn't want Kyle to know about the letter. If only she had known he would get back from school sooner, then she wouldn't have left the letter on the sofa.
"Hi mom, you're back home early today." Kyle smiled.
"How are you, Son? You shouldn't be home until the next thirty minutes at the very latest." Natasha placed the dish on the table. "Is everything alright?"
"I figured running was much faster than taking the bus." Kyle had actually been worried that he would arrive home later than usual because of the fight he had back in the alley. So, he decided to run home at full speed and arrived home earlier than usual.
"Of course you did..." Natasha sighed "...I keep forgetting you're now a metahuman and here I was planning to surprise you with your favorite dish before you arrive but I guess this is close enough."
"Sorry." Kyle scratched his head playfully while apologizing.
"It's fine, take a shower before dinner is ready." Natasha said.
"Okay." Kyle dropped the letter and walked to his room.
Immediately Kyle left, Natasha rushed to the sofa to pick up the letter and pocketed it in her dress. " Natasha you dummy, how can you make such a stupid mistake?" She grumbled as she returned to the kitchen.
Several minutes later, after Kyle had taken a shower, he was currently eating dinner along with Natasha at the dining table. They both continued to exchange simple comments that kept the atmosphere lively.
"Kyle about that letter, I just want to let you know that I'll figure everything out and you don't have to worry but focus on yourself." Natasha decided to choose this moment to discuss the topic.
Kyle raised his head from his plate of food to look at his mom directly in the eyes after listening to what she had just said.
"I already spent a portion of the money given to us by the other stall owners the other day, so I decided to give the leftovers to the landlord. Although it wouldn't cover the whole payment, I'm sure I can persuade him to give us more to completely pay it all up." Natasha hurriedly explained.
Kyle smiled. "Alright mom, I trust you can handle it." He nodded in agreement.
Natasha felt consoled by Kyle's reply. She had been worried that he would lose his focus on other things because of the current situation. This is why she chose to talk to him about it right away, and she was glad that he agreed.
On the other hand, Kyle wasn't comforted by all Natasha said because he felt remorseful about the burden she had to carry. However, he didn't want to add to her worries by revealing his true emotions.
"I have realized what ability I have awakened." Kyle cleverly changed the subject.
"Hmm, why didn't you tell me sooner?" Natasha asked.
"I was waiting for the right time." Kyle replied.
"Well what are you still waiting for? Spit out already." Natasha was delighted to hear Kyle's response.
Kyle laughed before he explained everything that happened in the alley between him and the bullies and how he came to the conclusion of what his abilities were.
"I know that I promised you that I wouldn't start it, however those bullies weren't willing to back off even if I tried not to fight them back. I didn't do anything drastic, just a few stitches and a body massage would have been enough to treat their injuries... I think."
Kyle Shrugged his soldiers
Natasha who was silently listening to all of Kyle's explanations suddenly burst into laughter which greatly surprised Kyle.
"Are you okay mom?" Kyle was concerned because this wasn't the reaction he was expecting from Natasha.
Natasha ignored Kyle's questions and continued laughing for a full minute before she finally recomposed herself. "Yes honey I am alright, in fact I feel ecstatic right now. Why wouldn't I be Son? Did you know how much I prayed for this kind of thing to happen and now that it's finally here rejoicing is all I can do?" She answered.
"Don't get me wrong, I did tell you not to start a fight but no parent would want to see their child getting bullied and after all these years you have had to endure it because you were weak, it is only right for you to fight back. I was worried about you going overboard with it, but you have handled it well; moreover, they have done more terrible things to you too." Natasha explained, focusing on Kyle's face.
Kyle smiled. "Thank you for taking care of me all this while mom."
"I only did what I had to, but you also worked hard to earn this. "Kyle, never forget how you got this power and you should go to the Meta Association to get an assessment," Natasha advised.
Suddenly, Kyle's face began to glow with a smile as an incredible idea that could solve their money problem popped into his head right after Natasha mentioned the Meta Association Assessment exam.
Kyle was fully aware of how hard Natasha worked daily to cover their expenses but the effort was not enough. When he returned from school, the letter was about overdue rent charges for their apartment. The letter stated that the landlord was offering them only one month to pay up or they would be evicted if they failed to comply.
"Why are you suddenly grinning like that?" Natasha questioned.
"I'm just excited that I'm going to be taking an awakening assessment. This was something I never imagined would be possible." Kyle responded, deciding not revealing the entire truth yet.
Natasha also knew that Kyle wasn't telling her the whole truth but she decided not to press him. "He will tell me when he feels it is right." She thought to herself.
They both continued to chat even after dinner until Natasha started to become drowsy. In the end, they both decided to retire to their respective rooms to sleep.
Kyle lay on his bed as he thought of his next move. He no longer wanted to let his mother face their financial hurdles alone, because he was ill, Natasha had to do all the work alone. However, he now had the power to make a difference, even if it was risky Kyle was willing to make use of his new found strength to take a chance.
