Mrs. Heyman's hands trembled uncontrollably as she stood outside the door. Fear and anticipation pumped through her veins like it was blood. Her fingers were shaking as she reached for doorknob. She felt sick, almost like she'd vomit. She run back out where the balcony was to take a deep breath.
The thought of what the man would say made her want to die. She felt like a failure. She knew he would call her one.
Though she could anticipate his words and tone, the unpredictability of his temper left her on edge. Throughout her life, she had lived in fear of this man. Even now, as a grown woman with a daughter of her own, she had not escaped his toxic influence or built a life she could be proud of.
