As his mood seemed to have gone from nervous to dark, I decided to change the subject.
"Hey, now that we're surrounded by aunts, uncles and whatnot, it has occurred to me that I never asked you about your grandparents."
"What about them?" He asked, getting out of his self-absorption.
"I don't know, where are they? I'm assuming you don't have them anymore, cause you've never mentioned them, I don't know, I was just wondering…"
"Uh, I guess we never talked about them, same goes for you, I don't know what happened to yours either." He answered, giving me my own question back while raising an eyebrow.
