Chapter 1 - Baptism by Fire

"...OH MY GOD! HE'S BREATHING! DOCTOR..!" says an unknown voice.

These are the first voices and sounds for the very long time that seemed like eternity. For the whole time there was nothing. No sound, no feeling, nothing. All this "nothingness" finally has been "jammed" by the first sounds.

"-ssible! He wasn't reaching for the whole time! He was allegedly dead!" says an unknown voice.

After the sounds suddenly the first light appeared. Darkness that was finally brightened by first eyesight showing something completely new than just black color everywhere.

"-eath is back to normal! Heartbeat is also back to normal!" says an unknown voice.

After the eyesight another thing appeared which was the feeling of warm torso and cold limbs. Finally after all that time of feeling absolutely nothing.

Now with three of the most important senses which arrived it can be seen that the place the action is taking place is in the maternity unit or more precisely, a few minutes after birth. Four people can be seen including two midwives, mother lying on the bed exhausted and father standing in shock a little further. Both parents, especially father, look at the newborn in shock and tears on their faces while midwives are just looking with confusion and shock. It's like they just saw something that shouldn't be possible. Because that is exactly what it is.

Infant was born "dead". For 10 minutes and 20 seconds straight of appropriate measures being taken to bring back the vital activity back to work, midwives eventually ended the attempt as it was considered as futile and placed the unresponsive baby on the small crib. 10 seconds after placing the baby in the crib, the grieving father saw that the baby suddenly started to breathe. He called the midwives and then they instantaneously once again started to take the appropriate measures to make sure the baby will be fine this time.

Both parents looking shocked and under pressure of giant stress look at both medics doing their best to make the newborn safe this time.

Father that is way too stressed and afraid quickly approaches the midwife with his body shaking.

"HE IS ALIVE RIGHT? TELL ME DOCTOR! TELL ME!" Father yelled.

"He is looking good so far. Please stand back and do not disturb me." One of the midwives' answers.

"PLEASE DO WHATEVER YOU CAN! PLEASE!" Father says all freaked out.

"We are doing what we can! He looks fine! Please step back!" One of the midwives responded.

As the father is still all freaked out gives them more space and walks around the room while still looking. Mother is still lying on bed also with a look of anxiety on her face however is more calm than father.

As the situation is being handled, in the distance outside of the room there can be heard sounds of...

THUMP! BOOM!

This is so inauspicious that the childbirth began just during the siege of the bastion. Enemies bombarding and knights guarding both fight with everything they have.

As if labour for parents that almost killed their child it's even multiplied because of the battlefield going on right behind their backs. Every second matters at this moment.

After a few minutes of chaos, the midwives finally finished their thing. One of them picked up the baby and turned it over to the parents.

"He will be alright. Although we have no idea how its vital activity came back." The midwife says while the second is cleaning the tools in a little hurry.

As she hands the baby to father, most of his strain has already calmed down. He hugs his child tightly with a lot of relief, eventually kissing him a lot on the forehead.

BOOOM!

Sound of the explosion was so loud it sounded like it caused the whole nearby building to collapse while slightly shaking the earth in the room. It caused midwives to fall on the floor.

"Damn it! We will celebrate later! We have to go right now! Mary, can you walk?" Father says it while holding the baby tightly.

"Nghh. Not really. Evacuate, all of you. I will figure something out." Says mother.

Father looks at Elsa and then at the baby and then at midwives who pick themselves up.

"I trust you will be fine." Father heads to the door.

"Promise me you will be fine! Promise me that you will be back! I strongly believe you will!" He says firmly still with a little fright on his face.

"I promise. Don't worry. Go now. I believe you also will be able to avoid this chaos easily." Mother says with a forced smile.

"Doctors. Please stay with her. That's what we paid you for. Please." As father says it he leaves the room and then builds.

Father leaves the building and sees the sight of burning houses and heavily damaged gate of bastion, archers and mages on top of the walls doing their best to protect the fort. He runs the opposite way in hope to see any exit from the fort where he can later run with all his stamina to a safe place.

After looking for a place to leave there is no way to leave through the gates as enemy dwarves are sieging it very neatly. As leaving through gates isn't possible the man can still escape the other way which is climbing on rumbles of partly destroyed walls away from any gate. He used his agility to climb on the wall thanks to his skills but as he reaches the top of the wall there is obviously water around the walls to reduce the chances of the enemy from outside climbing on top of the wall.

Father looks around for a moment with sweat going down from his forehead and thinks for a moment. Eventually the conclusion was that there is no other way. He took a few steps back and attempted to jump from the wall, over the water and to the ground. Thanks to his agility it was a success. He is still holding his child tightly, takes a quick look at him and keeps running towards the hill which looks safe enough.

He climbs the hill which is 180 ft away from the closest wall. On top of the 65 ft tall hill he sees the path which isn't occupied by any danger. For the last time he turns around and looks at the siege of the bastion with hope that his wife and most of the people there are safe. He looks for 10 seconds and then follows the path that is supposed to lead into Boullegarde, the town of Singard.

Two hours have passed.

Three hours have passed.

Three hours and thirty minutes have passed.

Finally the town can be seen on the horizon. Man is finally relieved as his trip to a safer place comes to an end. It is really incredible how he managed to run for three hours straight without getting tired which is strange because his body wasn't supposed to have such an amount of stamina, but he wasn't thinking about it as his only thought was arriving in a more guarded place.

While still holding the baby which is very calm he turns running into walking and approaches the gates which are already crowded with a horde of other people asking for access. Seems like it will take some time before he manages to get inside the town. Everyone are standing in line waiting for their turn to be registered and let inside for safety reasons.

Finally after 12 minutes of waiting in line there is finally a time for a man with a child to be questioned. He stands in front of the knight while the knight takes a quick look at both man and child then writes something on his paper.

"What is your name?" Asks the knight.

"I am Reden." Answers father.

Knight writes the name down.

"Reason for entry?" Knight asks again.

"We need a shelter." Answers father.

Knight writes something on paper once again and then lets both father and child inside. Finally. A safety. At least for now.

"Don't worry, son. You will be fine. Because you are my son. Your name is now Gah-Hal." Says Reden with a smile.
