A sheep herder, out in the field doing nothing but watch sheep, Kyle sat there with his chin on his palm watching wide around the flock, the black backed Jackal is a sly dog, and strikes without warning.
In the middle of the Karoo there wasn't much more to do, it was either check the sheep, check the cows... And that's about the only two things resilient enough to survive here.
Chickens were too plucky, just ask the Jackal, and if they so much as receive one dose of predator stress they peel over and die, the heat, the lack of food sometimes, then this thing coming out at night to kill them, poor birds couldn't handle that.
So not only is it pointless to keep chickens here, its also expensive, if you really wanted your eggs in the morning then spend a few Rands on a very fancy chicken coop that will keep out the Jackal, but then you also have to feed them...
