Chapter 2 - Him

Stop pitying yourself and start loving yourself" - yeh jawans Hai Deewana

Shlok's POV

"You know what Shlok's life is full of surprises. You never know what it holds for you so it's better not to worry about the future and live your present because in the worry of tomorrow you will never be able to live your present life " my maternal grandfather said to me while putting his dishes in the sink of the kitchen after dinner.

I just stood there behind him without saying anything and staring out of the window of the kitchen.  A couple of seconds later I heard myself saying that "Nanu(maternal grandfather) I know these things and I am living myself, working in a good company and earning enough money for me and my family to have a lavish lifestyle but there is something in me, something inside me is telling me that I am not happy. I was never the kind of person who used to agree that money can't buy you happiness but now it's applying to me. I am not happy inside. There's some kind of loneliness inside me which is stopping me from being happy and satisfied".

"I know sometimes we feel low and there is nothing wrong with it after all we all are humans," my nanu told me. And for a few minutes, we both didn't speak. It was a comfortable silence between us. He is right and I know I should not worry about the future and try to be happy that's why I took a few days off from my office to come here to Banaras to live with my grandparents for some refreshments and to avoid the polluted capital of India Delhi.

"Shlok there's some milk in the fridge and if you feel like drinking it in the hush of night you can. I am feeling sleepy right now we will carry on our conversation some other time. And I will take you to" before my nanu could complete it we heard some shouting and screaming of people from outside. We both rushed towards the gate and opened it. And in the meanwhile, my Nani (grandmother) also came outside and asked "What is happening around here? Why are people shouting?" People were rushing back to their houses and shouting that "Mallika is back! She's back!" "She was trying to kidnap Birju but he ran away and escaped. Luck was on his side this time", a random stranger told us. For a second I could not understand what was happening and what he was trying to tell but then my Nani told me that "there's a rumour going around here that Mallika is a Nishi Daak and she tries to kidnap and then kill people". "What is Nishi Daak?" I asked in bewilderment. "Nishi Daak means the ghost of the night, Nishi Daak is the spirit who calls people at night in the voice of their family members. It is said that it is a very dangerous soul," my Nani told me.

I don't know how but I found myself laughing hard after listening to the piece of information that my Nani just gave me and I asked her "really Nani, do you believe in such kind of stuff, in ghosts and all?" My main just hushed me and told my nana and me to go inside and don't talk about it. My nanu and I both smiled at her and came back to the house.

"Since when it is happening here?" I asked my nanu. "Since last two or three months,  " my nanu told me. "I feel like someone is trying to prank the people of this place and it's actually kind of funny that you all people believe in this thing," I told him. "Who told you that I believe in this thing? I know it's a prank but I feel so good when I scare your Nani by telling her about Mallika and how scary she is"  my nanu joked and we both laughed at this.

"You know you can try to find out, who is behind all this prank," my nanu told me. I got curious for a second but then a few questions hit me. "Where will I find Mallika and how will I even recognise her? From the name we can guess that She is a female" I said. My nanu said, "People say she looks like a skeleton. Like a zombie" and winked at me "and about where will you find her, I guess you can start with the railway platform near the jungle. People say she comes there often and Don't tell all these things to your Nani otherwise she will have my head for lunch" said my grandfather to me and departed to his room to sleep. I just smiled at him. They both love each other to death. I also wish to have the same but let's see what the future holds for me.

It was almost midnight and I was trying to sleep but couldn't and was just tossing and turning in my bed. I suddenly remembered the girl which I found in the market confronting the vendor for a mistake that he had not even committed. Just thinking about her instantly brought a smile to my face. She was indeed beautiful but her face was innocent too. She was small around 5'3" or 5'4" and had long hair and some kajal in her eyes with big jhumkhas (silver earrings) in her ears which was making her look even more beautiful and when she realised her mistake, her face was a sight to see.

Brushing the thoughts I  tried to sleep because I was excited for tomorrow to find out who was behind the whole Mallika facade and who the hell was Mallika and after some time sleep engulfed me.
