Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: {Befriending My Friend's Crush Pt. 1}

Math SUCKS, I have a test tomorrow on Friday. To say the absolute least, I dunno how I didn't fail last semester. Kiara is even more incompetent than I am about this stuff. Logarithmic functions are the absolute death of my sanity. The other girl next to me, is mute, and talks through a phone, meaning she can't whisper. I genuinely need help on this.

I decided to whisper to Xochitl . "Hey will you explain this to me?"

She looks around. Probably thinking about whether to agree or not.

"After class, meet me in the library, but you owe me a boba tea, I study in there anyway." she wrote and showed me.

"Thank you, and yeah that's fine."

I would ask Hyun, but the thing is, Hyun got a big fat F on this unit, leaving his only standing A, which was Algebra 2 last year , a C because he also couldn't understand logarithms.

Dowoon caught a cold on Monday during his tournament, so I haven't been able to tease him about Xochitl yet.

Maybe I can be his wingwoman, it's the least I can do as a friend.

Gotta text Hyun real quick.

"Will you walk home today? Xochitl is gonna teach me logarithmic functions. XOXO 💗💓💕❤️❣️💘" I send him.

"That is the first time I've ever received a text from you with emojis, it's cringe. And I was gonna ask you if I can walk home anyway, since I got some errands to run." He replies back.

"Alright love you, see you tomorrow."

"Love you."

"TEXTING DURING CLASS? Miss uh, (lemme look at my seating chart) Keum! If I catch you again I'm gonna confiscate your phone!" My math teacher exclaimed.

She's an old coot, it doesn't matter one bit. As long as I don't do it for the rest of the day, she won't remember. She barely even remembers math, my math teacher is like 85 and somehow hasn't retired yet.

"Hey Kiara, want to join us for a study sesh?" The robotic voice from Xochitl's phone says. Last time it was a thick Mexican woman voice, this time it's a sweet and serene Pacific Islander woman voice.

Man technology has come a long way.

"Sorry I can't, my parents need me to pick up my brother. They just gave me my dad's old motorcycle."

"Yo that's sick. Maybe next time." Xochitl's phone says in the generic robotic American woman voice that's on those really underdeveloped, technology-stealing Pineapple phones that give trash quality chargers.

I think Kiara is like her only friend, they both have first lunch so maybe they're friends. At the very least they seem friendly with each other.

Staring at this girl, you would have no idea she's an absolute nerd, she may not be in a higher form of math than Hyun and Dowoon, but in every other subject she has advanced placement, I know because Dowoon is entirely in advanced placement classes (except math, he's only in pre-calc) which is probably where he met her.

The big problem is that she literally can't speak.

I want to know why, is it trauma, or are her vocal cords cut, maybe that area just doesn't work. I dunno I just have always been curious.

We meet at the library at a table.

"Thank you for not being pushy. Being autistic and not being able to speak makes it very overwhelming when someone starts bombarding me with questions, or asks me first and foremost about my personal life. Same with when guys hit on me, that makes it weird. It's not like I can answer right away, I have to type it. Well let's get started." Xochitl says.

"What don't you understand?"

"All of it. If it's logarithms, ALL of it. My boyfriend doesn't understand them either." I reply. I wait patiently for her response, I just play with my pencil while I wait.

"Okay. This is how you do logarithms. This is a refresher for me too so thanks. We can test each other after...(in here is her explaining logarithms, you can guess what she typed)." This time it was a trucker voice.

"Ohhh. Okay that makes sense. Thankfully we aren't graphing them yet. Also, I like that you get to change your voice. It's funny in different situations." I reply.

She laughs. Silently. That rules out PTSD, because this girl was dying.

This girl is really expressive, I guess it's because of her lack of understanding emotions, she does a lot of movements with her hands while her text to speech reads what she typed. This girl could be a black and white silent motion picture actor with the way she expresses herself.

We chat a bit and test each other on some of the problems we have to test each other with.

Approx. about forty minutes later.

"Thanks for not being a jerk. You always kinda made me feel uncomfortable because of your reputation. Sorry for prejudging you. You were the most patient with me." Xochitl "said".

"It's not a problem. We all have things we deal with. Also I'm souped up on Adderall right now so I'm not impatient moody me, I do live up to my reputation though hahaha."

"Nah, you don't. Now you owe me a boba. There's a good place we can walk to about 3 streets down."

"Okay. And you don't have to worry about walking. My dad let's me use his car, he only uses it like 18 times a month when he drives my mom to and from the airport and when he gets groceries."

"Oh cool, what kind of car?" (remember each response takes about 10 seconds to a minute or more).

"Tasla Comet Model 7."

"Oh yeah that's a good car. When they started bringing back muscle cars."

"You know your stuff about cars."

"After I model myself through college, I plan on becoming an engineer. I want to build show cars. Maybe be my own model for the articles and stuff."

"That's a cool dream. You go girl!"

"Ha. Ha. Ha."

This girl's fun to hang with. Not annoying at all. Actually that might be why.
