My sword flashed in front of me as it clashed against the blade of the enemy. My mind became clearer, my heart beat slower, my body became lighter.
I dodged the blade on the right, before pouncing in my opponents. I hit on the left only to meet his sword, I followed with a thrust and a cut. Faster. Fiercer. My speed increased and my blows were more precise, forcing the soldier in front of me on the defensive.
He defended himself, but at this moment, his foot slid on a root showing its head on the ground. It was the time.
I charged into the enemy who was trying to get back his balance, and with a surgical slash, a thin line appeared on his throat. His eyes widened under the surprise, but before he could do anything, blood flowed down, painting his whole body a smelly red.
It was only the beginning, I rushed to my left to attack the soldier fighting against Jean. This one was perfectly dodging every blow, slashing here and there, making countless scratches on his opponent. But before my sword reached this exhausted man, another enemy was sent flying and collided against him. At that moment, a terrible warcry echoed on my left, before I saw Dereck bypassing me at an impressionable speed.
He charged in the large group of enemies with his heavy ax. Behind him, hiding in his shadow and killing like a snake, Anis was wielding his knives as nobody could ever do it.
The battle had started already for a few minutes, but no order could be heard from the officers, what were they doing? And my great sergeant, where was he this stupid guy?
We couldn't continue like that. By luck, the 5th company was at the rear of the whole regiment, and these enemies didn't know how to launch an ambush. The other companies were probably deep in the shit, but at least there were only so few enemies in front of us.
Without wasting more time, I took the only decision I could. I followed Dereck.
"Soldiers! Gather on me! We get out of here!" My voice echoed in the area. All the fighters around me were members of the 5th company, and my voice was pretty well known.
Without asking for more, and since no other order followed, they were all coming this way. It was all their first fight. It was the first time they fought for their lives. And it was the first time they saw the hell that was a battlefield.
A soldier plunged his sword into the chest of an enemy after a long battle between them. But he couldn't remove the blade in time since it was blocked by the bones, and his arm was cut clean by another enemy who had appeared on his right.
A corporal, a good guy, struck and struck, again and again with a look of hatred on his face, as tears rolled on his cheeks. Two meters away, his soldier, one of the members of his team, a friend, was lying on the ground. His lifeless eyes were staring at the sky hidden by the trees.
Blood was everywhere, bodies were everywhere, shouts and screams were everywhere. It was the true sight of this war. That was hell.
All the soldiers of the 5th company were gathered at the same area, and it was at that time that the captain decided to wake up from his slumber.
"Soldiers! Prepare yourself to pierce through the left!" At least, he had the same plan as me. After all, if we continued to rest in this place, we would die without a doubt.
A soldier appeared on my side, shooting in my ears. "Let's go, corporal! You and your team open the path!"
Was this guy mad? I turned around ready to knock this madman down as I thought who the fuck would give me this order, but as I saw it was my captain, i suddenly wanted to betray my country once again and kill this guy.
"Yes, captain!" Sadly, I couldn't do that. "Wolf team, on me!"
Not even a few seconds after I called them, four bloody men left the battlefront, covered and replaced by their comrades. The battle intensified itself around us and this front line was only two meters away from me. The shock of swords filled our ears, forcing all of us to shout what we said.
I watched the eyes of these soldiers. These four guys were under my command for a long time now, and I was expecting it to be so until we went back home. This mission would be complicated but we will still do it.
I just said to them a few words, as I knew it would be enough.
"Derrick and me on the front. Anis and Jean at the rear. Jimmy in the center of the formation." I stopped for a few seconds, strengthening my grip over the handle of my sword. "Don't stop your weapons, guys."
With these words, I unsheathed my second sword with my left hand. It was time to see some blood.
We charged against the soldiers, ready to pierce through them. Behind us, more than seventy comrades followed us, with the last of them defending themselves against the enemies.
I slashed with my two swords at my left and my right, before kicking a guy away. I bent my head, just in time to see a blade pass a few centimeters above my helmet. But the time wasn't to kill them, I bypassed him without caring about him anymore.
I wasn't scared of him attacking my back, after all, there were my guys behind me.
Jean used his spear with extreme speed and pushed back all enemies trying to come near us. We rushed inside the enemies as if we were the tip of an arrow piercing through its way while its body was our company following behind.
Derreck was using his terrifying ax to send flying all the enemies at the front while using his powerful body to create a path. Anis was cutting here and there with his knives, almost like a god of death.
But it wasn't any of them or me the most eye-catching one, at the center of our group dashing at full speed, Jimmy was shooting arrows at great speed. Even when he was running, his precision was still extraordinary as always.
An arrow passed not even half a meter away from me to sink inside the body of a man ruching at me, right in the gap of the leather armor.
But this charge toward liberty wasn't an easy one. Cuts and injuries were all over the body of Dereck, gnashing his teeth under the pain. I couldn't dodge a blow on time, and could only try to parry the blade with one of my swords. But the blade only slightly deviated from the hit, and the tip sank into my shoulder.
I felt the pain spread in my whole body, and the coldness of the iron touching the heat of my blood. But I didn't care. It wasn't the time to care about such trivialities. I propelled my body forward, crashing into the bastard who had injured me.
But honestly, it wasn't the smartest idea I ever had. The guy was sent flying away because of the powerful shock, but his sharp blade also pierced into my flesh and scratched my bones under this one.
But still, I just continued forward.
Another cut appeared on my right arm, while I heard Jean let go of a painful groan. But we couldn't stop here.
"Forward my boys! Tighten your fists, gnash your teeth, squeeze your ass, and forward!" I yelled with all my might, while my soldiers, my valiant men, answered me.
""Forward!""
We shook the battlefield with our feet, stomping the difficult ground full of twigs and roots, passing in between all the trees while fighting like demons against these bastards. We cut, pierced, and crushed. But above all, we went forward.
