"Aaaaaaaaahhhh! Hmm! Hmm!" "Take it easy, Emily. You are doing great. Now take in a deep breath and give me one last push just like you did earlier, okay?"
Emily Flynch, who had been in labor for the past twenty-four hours was as tired as the word could get. However, she had to finish it for her children to be united.
Dr Keith then said "Now, Emily! Give me one hard push. I can see the head " She then took in a deep breath through the mouth and breathed out the same way, in a bid to endure the contractions.
The bed felt like pins pricking her as she couldn't wait to push the baby out and be free. Emily swore never to get pregnant again after this experience.
She just knew Gerald would understand and support her wholly.
Unknown to her, all the complications of her pregnancy, as well as the gestational diabetes she suffered, have rendered her chances of ever getting pregnant, zero.
"Mmmmmhhhhhh!" One hard push later came the cry of a baby that triggered the others to follow in her steps.
The whole place was filled with the crying sound of babies which then quieted down as the babies were placed on Emily's chest, and in both arms to enable both mother and children to bond.
The mother was then taken through her final stages of childbirth. These involved gently pulling out the amniotic sac and subsequently stitching up any tear that may have occurred in the process of pushing the babies out.
"Congratulations Mr Flynch! Your wife just delivered three beauties."
There was total silence but doctor Keith continued anyway "you are so lucky to have such fairies and I'm really glad I ushered those three girls into this world Gerald"
Dr Keith gave a very sincere smile that made her look so breathtakingly beautiful. It could have taken Gerald's breath away as usual and reminded him of the first thing he noticed about his beautiful wife, Emily.
It was nothing other than her overly beautiful and highly contagious smile. Gerald could never have enough of it.
He likes the doctor who always reminds him of Emily and never fails to compliment her beautiful smile anytime they meet. He would then insist she forgo the formalities and call him Gerald instead of Mr Flynch.
Gerald was always present at the antenatal visits with Emily. As a result, Dr Keith had her fair share of compliments from him at all such meetings.
However, at this moment, Gerald didn't take notice of her smile nor did he register any other thing she said after "three beauties."
Dr Keith then hurried out of the private ward to allow Gerald Flynch enough time to enjoy his three bundles of cutenes. Still, not without saying excitedly while giggling like a little girl, "congratulations once again Mr Flynch."
Before Dr Keith left the ward, she saw Gerald staying rooted to his spot with a blank look on his face but read no negative meaning into it.
Dr Keith was happy to see the triplets who surprisingly came out healthy because Emily battled gestational diabetes during her pregnancy. The condition nearly threatened the life of the children.
Gerald didn't even make a single sound. Meanwhile, she took it to mean that he was shocked by the news. After all, the man loves his wife so much he couldn't love his children any less, right?
Instead, Gerald was so dumbfounded by the news that he couldn't find his voice. Three girls! Three damn girls! What was he going to do with three girls? How is his family business going to thrive without an heir?
It's not like Emily is capable of giving him a son either.
He kept mumbling "three beauties" until it did its work of sinking in.
Gerald rushed out of Emily's ward and sat down animatedly on the stairs while in deep thought.
His deceased elder brother had two sons and a daughter before the unfortunate incident occurred.
His younger brother's eight-month-old pregnant wife is currently expecting a male child. This was indicated by a recent ultrasound scan they did.
Moreover, even though his sister hasn't married yet, Gerald believes she could birth a son after she marries.
Where does that leave him then?
How was he, Gerald Flynch supposed to remain the head of the Flynch family without a son? He knew for a fact that his late brother's son would gladly take up said position and kick him out if he doesn't have a male child of his own.
Everything he has toiled to build all these years could slip through his hands if he doesn't act immediately!
Having come to a sudden resolution, Gerald reached his hand into his pocket to fish for his phone and then proceeded to ring a particular contact.
When his call connected after the third try, he said "I need a divorce agreement in the next two hours. Are you up to the task or do I need to look elsewhere?."
Barrister Connar was tongue-tied at the sudden request but recovered in time and asked in a sleepy voice "did you check the time, Gerald? You call me at three o'clock a.m to speak of a divorce agreement. Don't you know a brother needs to get some sleep also?"
Gerald repeated in an irritated tone this time around "are you up to the task or do I need to look elsewhere?"
In an equally irritated tone, Connar responds "of course! You know I'm up to the task as long as you pay me to double for all my troubles. Tell me who's getting divorced? Why are you making a big deal out of the whole thing anyway?"
After hanging up the phone call, Connar could not get Gerald's response off of his mind. In his own words "I've come too far to give up on the family business. Connar, I'm divorcing Emily because she can't give me an heir."
Connar could not get the mind-boggling thoughts off his mind as sleep automatically eluded him due to shock.
"How could a married man divorce his wife immediately after she delivered his children, just because they are all girls! Come to think of it, who cares? What if they are girls?
Connar knew there was nothing he could say to change Gerald's mind and therefore advised him to ensure minimal damage in his bid to get the divorce agreement signed by Emily.
