Chereads / KIN / Chapter 23 - Cover of Night

Chapter 23 - Cover of Night

"The Dragon Kin still walk among us!!" Shouted a shabby looking man standing upon the side of the street. People would rush by, passing him without a second glance. Everyone was focused on their busy lives and destinations.

There were market stalls lining the street selling various products. Annagon was a busy place, but not a single smile could be seen. The people were all wearing tattered clothes and had but a single silver coin in their pockets.

Poverty was a common occurrence in Seryad. Even when the Dragon Kin kingdoms still existed, before they were torn down, they lived in poverty. The lands were bountiful with fruits and food, animals were not lacking within the forests and fields. That was not the issue.

The greed and control of the rich and greedy was the cause. The human empires would hog all the food for themselves, as well as the currency. They even taxed the Dragon Kingdoms before the war, bringing them to their knees with starvation and poor conditions.

"They are not the enemy! They are the saviors! We are the villains! Stand for the Dragons and their Kin!! Bring back the peace!!!" The old man shouted at the top of his lungs, waving around a sign.

A rock suddenly flew through the air, cracking against the man's head.

"Shut up you damn geezer!" Someone shouted.

The old man held his hand to his bleeding head, his vision blurred. Three brutes of men came up to him, one of them grasping the man by his collar and lifting him.

"The dragons are demons, and the Kin are the demon keepers. They killed countless humans and brought about that terrible war. They tortured us and ate us alive. They were corrupt with power. They deserved what they got, so stop standing up for them, you bastard." The man growled.

"You believe everything the king says?" The old man spoke.

Rage contorted across the brute's face, and his fist crashed into the old man's face, knocking him to the ground. The other two men began to kick the geezer while he was down, and he raised his hands and curled into a ball to protect himself.

When they were done, the two walked away and the first man spat on the old man.

"Disgusting." He said, then turned away and walked to the bar with his buddies.

"No…" the old man mumbled, laying motionless. "What is disgusting.. is this country."

Nargash flew atop his dragon, soaring through the sky as it turned indigo, the first of the stars revealing themselves high above like paint being stripped away to reveal the crystals beneath it. Far on the horizon, the clouds were painted orange and scarlet by the sun which had disappeared behind the glittering ocean.

But, as they migrated further from the forest and closer to Mt Fang, the weather changed. The clouds turned dark, bolts of lightning arcing across the sky, sending echoes across the clouds. The wind grew violent and brutal, trying with all its might to knock them down out of the sky.

*Damn this storm.* Nargash growled.

*We really should go back to Serrakon, lord..* Keagor suggested.

*SILENCE!*

The dragon gave no response.

Then Keagor's head lifted suddenly and he halted in the air.

*What is it?* Nargash asked impatiently.

*Did you see that?*

*What? You better not be playing games with me, snake.*

*I would never my lord. I truly saw someone..*

*Another dragon? Is it Gena?*

*No. It was not gold, it had been silver.*

*Silver? A silver dragon? Are you certain, snake?*

*Yes.. I am certain.*

Suddenly a violent gust of wind exploded past them, knocking Keagor off balance.

*The hell?!* Nargash exclaimed, *Was that it..? How is it so fast..?*

*KOOM*

Suddenly a dragon appeared above them, white lightning bursting and arcing forth from its body, illuminating its scales. The silhouette of an armored figure holding a spear sat atop the dragon's back.

The silver dragon was impossibly fast, so fast in fact that the water drops of the storming rain looked frozen in time as the dragon descended. The water droplets became illuminated as bolts of lighting arced through them.

The dragon exploded into Nargash and Keagor from above, lighting bursting on impact as Keagor was sent zooming out of the sky at immense speed, the impact knocking them down.

Keagor shifted his body as to protect his master just before they slammed to the earth below, the ground shattering and splitting.

Nargash grit his teeth, glaring up into the sky. At first he could see nothing, but then a flash of lightning revealed a silver dragon hovering above them, it's rider returning his gaze with intensity.

The rider raised their weapon, and directed it at Nargash. Then, a bolt of arcing lighting came hurtling down on him, decimating and scorching everything around them.

And then the silver dragon left, disappearing into the black storm.
