I make sure not to avert my gaze. I keep my tone even. Again, this is not what I was expecting. Shock, yes. But he looks angry. His upper lip is curled. He looks like he's going to attack me. "The truth is, I don't know who the father is. It could be you, or it could be Garrett."
He looks like he's been stabbed with a silver dagger. Even though I can't feel his emotions the way he feels mine, the disappointment and bitterness course through me. He runs a hand through his hair. I can imagine how difficult this is to process, I can barely process this myself. I lower my head, feeling ashamed even though Garrett forced himself on me this whole time.
This shouldn't have been happening. This was supposed to be our happy ever after. I marvel at the unfairness of it all.
He asks, "He forced himself on you?"
I lower my eyes to my lap. "Yes."
He's silent for a long time. Then, he says, "I'll kill him."
