Chapter 1 - Taking Responsibility

The start of the 25th century brought a lot of changes for humanity. And it was all caused because of the Neural system's release - a supercomputer that put all other technology to shame.

When it had first been created, it was received with mixed reactions from the public.

Many saw it as the epitome of human creation, the ultimate machine capable of creating miracles. The other saw it as a sign of doom, a reliance that would bite humanity in the back one day.

But despite its shortcomings, governments all over the world had approved its usage, and thus the world had stepped into a new era of technological advancement.

And the human race had thrived under this AI rule but not everyone had been contented.

Even more so when the surge of technology had brought back the use of magic. With the new Neural system and its advancements, it had become possible for humans to wake up their dormant genes and make use of magic.

And thus a new department had been formed, the magic law keeper's department, made up entirely of government magic users and used to keep law and order of the city.

All was well in the world, the human race thriving against nature and conquering it for its use.

But that was only the surface and the reality was rather bleak.

The neural system's magic had a limit and a huge price - the common population.

The riches, the power, and the control brought about by the neural system could only serve about 50% of the human race. There were just not enough resources for everyone.

It had caused a divide between the community, between rich and poor and an age of oppression had begun.

Those who had power and money could buy magic to make their lives easier while the poor had to be content with hand-me-downs from the rich and powerful.

It was not a beautiful world but it was what was behind handed to the future generations.

The government had no regret looking after its own, sacrificing the poor for the rich of the place and thus, the world was reconstructed once again in an ideal image of the rich.

There was regret in people's minds but they would forget the reasons pretty soon.

But one was more regretful than the one who had started it all, the creator of the Neural system, the professor of origin.

"Are you sure this is safe? We have not tested it yet. Who knows where you would end up if you do this?" dead blue eyes looked back at the beautifully aged face in front of him.

"I owe it to them, to those people to make this right. I created this mess and I shall fix it as well" the scientist looked over to the world.

The building he occupied held the highest point in the surrounding, making all the other tall buildings in the vicinity visible to his eyes.

"It is not only your fault. Don't forget, I agreed to it as well. It is as much my fault as it is yours" the female spoke in soft tones but there was steel in her voice.

"I know. But you cannot leave yet. The people are dependent on you to speak for them. You need to stay here and give them hope" the scientist looked over to the female, blue meeting blue.

Those blue eyes were so similar to his own, a carbon copy even and he knew he would miss the owner of those eyes even when he would forget everything else.

"I still don't agree with your plan but I can see you are dedicated to your decision. Please take care, brother, and take care" the scientist felt his steps falter at the anguish in that tone.

His beloved sister seemed to have aged a few more years in a matter of minutes and it pricked at his heart.

He wished he could help her out, to make things better for her but there was no way for him to do anything now.

He needed to wait for an appropriate time, a time when people would be ready to fight for their freedom.

But that time was not now. The world was too overwhelmed by the discovery of magic and the scientist had never regretted anything as much as he did this discovery.

"Please, I leave the future in your hand. Maria, you are strong, far more than me. Live out your life to its fullest and help the poor people out in my stead" the time was running out now.

They only had one chance of succeeding.

The Neural system had started to load up, the blue lighting the space around them and it would not be long before the authorities would storm this place up.

They needed to hurry out and carry their places.

The scientist hurried to the platform, his hands moving fast as they tried to program and reprogram the coordination of his destination again and again.

They only had one shot at it and they had to make it count for all it was worth.

"Hurry, they are here. I will try to stall them as much as I can" Misha offered as she moved to the other computer to stall the enemy.

"No, you get out. We cannot have you get caught here or our plan would fail" the scientist pushed back, his tone urgent and he could see the female open her mouth to protest his world.

But there was no time for her to get any of her argument in before the scientist made his words clear.

"You need to get out. Don't forget, we have a mission to carry out and there are consequences of our actions" the female did not have any other words to refute.

Even she knew how much was riding on her shoulders.

"Please take care brother" the female finally forced out before she ran away from the place.

There was no camera recording in this room or this corridor. The government would not take the risk of it getting hacked.

There were only manual magic guards but those had been taken care of already.

The blue energy was shining more and more brightly now and the system would overcome its limits at any given second.

The scientist braced himself for the impact and looked over the still-developing city beneath his gaze.

The world had come a far way in the last few decades and this would be the last time he would see this view.

He should have appreciated it much more if he had not been the one who had to make sacrifices for it.

But he was glad it was his last view before the energy took him over and his body dissolved into light.

"Freeze intruder" the magic guards entered but the room was empty of everything but the neural system.

"Who is it? Did you catch the intruder?" a sophisticated voice asked, causing the soldiers to break out into sweet.

"No Mrs. President. I'm afraid the culprit managed to get away. We have our people looking more into it so please sit back and relax" a soldier replied, looking nervously at the lady.

The soldier felt his life flash in front of his eyes as the lady looked him over.

The icy gaze was far too intimidating, not to mention the aura she emitted.

"See to it that you catch the culprit. Otherwise, you can kiss your easy life goodbye" the soldier shivered at the threat of the woman.

Everyone knew the president did not make any ideal threats to anyone. She meant every word she had said and that worried the people around her.

"Well, time to get to work. Someone also get professor Milles here. His expertise might be needed to uncover this mystery" the captain of the soldiers ordered as the president finally left.

This was a mess and they needed to solve it before it takes their head with it.

But unknown to him, their bad luck was only just starting.

"Sir, professor Mills is nowhere to be seen. I'm afraid we cannot allocate him, even with magic at our disposal" the guard felt his life flash before his eyes.

The professor was gone? Disappeared? How was it even possible for even the neural system to fail them?

And worst of it all, they could not even ask the experts about it. Professor Milles was the expert in this case.

"I'm done for. The president would eat me alive" the guard moaned but he had to face the music somehow.

It would also be better if the president heard it from him and not someone else. Otherwise, there was no telling what would happen to the poor would who manage to induce the wrath of the president.

"Wish me luck" and the guard captain was never heard from again.

There were search parties sent out for Professor Milles but no one saw him after that day. It was as if he had managed to vanish completely in thin air.

And he was never heard from again.

Till a few centuries later when Misha Raycraft opened his blue eyes in the future.
