Synopsis

Chapter 1 - The Beginning Of The End

There was a deafening bang as Angelica, a blonde with voluptuous breasts, summoned huge magical spikes to provide cover for Harlan. The youth raised his left hand with his sword to shield his eyes from the sudden, blinding light that came as the objects slashed through the wind in his direction, his eyes watering as he wasn't used to such an amount of light.

He opened his eyes, almost stumbling, but assuming a specific position for battles, which showed that the young man had some experience with similar situations like the one he was in at the moment.

At the same moment, he delivered a clean blow with the sword he carried, without missing the opportunity that the spears gave him.

KAPANG!

A white silhouette with a few red stripes dropped to his knees, then dropped to the ground, hands pressed to his chest. A pool of blood began to spread rapidly across the place, blood coming from the spot where his head had been previously.

''Urgh...''

A long, pain-filled groan came from the front of the corpse sprawled on the floor.

It was originated from a man with a slim physique, who had a relatively compact appearance, but that suited him and made him handsome. The young man was incessantly fighting against various strange creatures that were constantly advancing towards him, seeking to kill him and his companions. He wore a strange, tattered purple cape, accompanied by silver armor that was covered in black blood, making him frightening.

The young man had shaggy light brown hair and very deep black eyes that seemed to suck the soul out of anyone who looked at them for too long, but at that moment they were shivering nonstop. The black layer of dark circles that surrounded his eyes looked more distorted than usual, and now there were a few drops of red here and there, which spread all over his pale face.

He was completely covered in blood, and it was difficult to know which part of it was his and which part was from the beings he was killing nonstop.

He looked like a maniac, straight out of a horror movie. And he didn't like it at all.

''Rachel and Lucas, do a pincer attack, like the one we trained! You need to trust me!", he yelled, parrying an attack aimed at his head. If he hadn't parried that movement, he would surely be dead on the ground.

''We believe in you,'' said the woman named Rachel. ''But given the situation, we are very confused. Therefore, we want to understand what is happening. Please, I just ask you to tell us what happened, it doesn't have to be fact for fact!''

The woman advanced to the right at Harlan's suggestion and surrounded the enemies the group faced, which made things easier. She was trying to keep the frustration and confusion out of her voice, but she wasn't having much success.

After all, how could she do it in this situation?

"You've made the pain come back stronger than before," Harlan said sternly, still swinging the sword he held with both hands. His arms were a little stiff, his scraped elbows pointing forward as he supported his entire body weight on his left leg and cut forward nonstop.

After all, he had no choice, and no time to rest. At least not now.

He was defeating the opponents who ran fiercely to try to kill him, and it looked like his arms were going to fall to the ground at any moment. Still, his face didn't twitch in the slightest, keeping an impassive expression so as not to affect his companions.

''Huff Huff''

He was panting more and more and his attacks became slower and slower, the cuts and scrapes on his body pulsed and the blood gushed continuously, dripping and forming a vivid red puddle on the floor. He was clearly being affected by the bruises, but he refused to give up and forced his body and muscles that were begging for a break, to move.

Many would say it's crazy to do that, and it really is. He knew it, it was almost a sadistic feeling he felt doing that. But what choice did he have?

Harlan knew that his time was running out, an example that showed this was that he was no longer able to perform his sword techniques in his body's current state. He wouldn't last long, even though he was one of the strongest people in the world. His muscles were giving way, and his lungs felt like they were being squeezed by some strange force inside his body, giving him shivers and making him think about a lot of weird things.

''I won't die without a fight, did you hear me you fucking monsters? You cheap motherfuckers are going to die with me!", a woman with golden hair screamed, conjuring a flaming ball that ignited everyone it hit in the narrow hallway, that she and the group were in.

There were four more people behind Harlan, they were the last members of his group that had survived, and that he defended harshly from attacks so they could fulfill their roles without restrictions and unnecessary interruptions that would get in their way.

There were three women (who spoke with a strange and relatively inappropriate language, and who were hot-tempered) and a young red-haired man, who pulled the string of a mythical and majestic-looking bow without batting an eyelash for a second.

One of them was called Angelica, just like the goddess of life, extremely beautiful with her long, shiny blonde hair that fell down to her slender shoulders. Angelica was the supreme mage, known and nicknamed, the 'Golden Child', by the people, for her enormous ability to decimate enemy armies alone and having conquered a demonic stronghold in just a few hours without needing any help.

She was without a doubt one of the most valued members of the entire group, and one of the most famous people in Acaris. Excluding the members who fled, and those who died, she was certainly the strongest of them all at the moment, of course, if they didn't count Harlan as well.

On the other hand, there was Lucily, a well-behaved and extremely beautiful young woman. Her proportions were adequate, being neither too big nor too small and having straight black hair with a few blue streaks accompanied by yellow eyes. Her biggest problem was that the woman looked at everything with a rigid, immobile face, looking cold as ice.

She also did not carry any sharp weapons, having a few pieces of clothing and short equipment that did not interfere with her movements when shooting her bow, wielding it in a special and unique way. After all, it was not for nothing that she carried the title of 'Archery Saint'.

As for the other two members, well, the other two members were siblings who were very similar in appearance and personality. The red-haired girl was a person that Harlan knew intimately, having been friends with her since the first demonic wave that swept across the entire world, basically knowing her since they were brought to Acaris. Alanna Hermon, the child of the heavens and the divine healer of light, responsible for helping and healing her companions during battles.

Sadly, she was exhausted just like the others and, therefore, not having the expected effect when using her healing spells. Certainly, if she used a more thorough spell, she would run out of mana and the group's healing would simply stop.

And lastly, Kernan Hermon, the aerial terror, who had long red hair that trailed down his forearms, and his body frame was tall and defined, holding an odd-looking bow that looked like it was straight out of fantasy books. He was almost as handsome as the red-haired woman, drawing attention wherever he went with his radiant beauty. He was muscular and wore mail and alloy armor so as not to hinder his movements when pulling his bowstring.

His fingertips were red, the friction effect of pulling the equipment cord so hard without a minute to rest.

FLASH!

Almost like lightning, Lucas reappeared at Harlan's right side, carrying and bringing his mate Rachel with him. All of them had dark looks plastered on their faces, and a few bruises scattered on their bodies, but none could compare to the miserable state in which the squad leader, Harlan, found himself.

Though he wasn't as well known as the others, having chosen to live in the shadows and just quietly accepting responsibilities, Harlan was certainly someone of great worth.

Everyone looked at Harlan with worried eyes, he was the closest member of the door of death present there. However, he refused to receive more sophisticated treatments and was limited to just being healed by simple healing spells. Harlan was known in some parts of the world, because of his supernatural strength, his stamina as great as a titan, and his sword skills that surpassed any master swordsman on the entire planet at an early age.

However, he remained human. His biggest weakness and perhaps also his biggest advantage, acquired at his birth.

He constantly said that even if he died there, he would at least pave the way for his faithful companions to leave with their lives intact so they could return to Earth. So... So they could return to the arms of their true blood-related families, in their birthplaces.

So that they could truly protect their world by purging and sending Earth's monsters away, bringing everyday life back.

However, no one there intended to witness the death of their leader, who despite not being a famous hero, much less decorated, was someone of paramount importance to all of them, always helping them from the beginning. They would fight by his side to the death, no matter the situation, and they certainly wouldn't abandon or betray him as their other colleagues had done.

SUSSHI

As if expecting them to be distracted, a strange sound reverberated through the long hallway the group was in. A large number of arrows and spears were launched towards the already frayed and ragged-looking group.

Harlan caught sight before anyone could say anything, moving forward and positioning himself in a way that could stop at least most of the shooting. Perhaps, if he hadn't been in a situation where he was almost dying and so lacking in strength in every limb of his body, he could block all these attacks with relative ease. But there was no use thinking about it, so he just positioned himself straight, planting his right foot on the ground and stretching his dominant arm forward with the half-destroyed sword he carried.

KAPANG! GONG, KLANG!

An arrow hit Harlan's right ear, ripping off a large part of it. The young man showed an expression of pain, but he didn't bother enough to stop parrying the attacks of the arrows that were flying towards the group. A second later, two arrows violently broke parts of his hand and forearm, causing him to feel more pain than before.

Still, he stood impassive, trying his best not to faint.

KUTSH! KAPANG! KATAANG!

He was able to redirect most attacks, his waist and arms went numb, looking like he had completely lost movement in both. But he kept cutting the wind with his sword, preventing the attacks from hitting his companions, his wounds growing bigger and bigger, and seeming to get worse.

Blood oozed from Harlan's half-severed ear and from his other wounds acquired from the impact of the arrows and spears. His once dignified and flashy clothes have become a completely wrecked piece of equipment that would make any blacksmith cry with sadness at the sight of it!

He ignored the bruises scattered all over his body, and gestured for his worried companions to move on and not worry about him. Harlan staggered a little, barely holding on, but forcing himself to keep going, at least until he could get his companions out of that place.

Some time passed, their steps maintaining a speed that could not be considered fast, much less slow, as they continued walking and facing the beasts in a straight line. They were looking for anywhere they could take refuge in that strange-looking dungeon the group was in.

SCREECH

They arrived at a huge dark room and found themselves surrounded by countless beings that they had no idea who or what they were. But they soon realized that they had no way back. There was no way out, as the vile creatures and humanoid silhouettes blocked the entrance they used to enter the hall.

''Fuck, that's bad.'', Kernan commented, as he looked at the silhouettes that surrounded the entire hall.

''Yeah, we all know'', the group responded drily to the red-haired man.

A silence took over the place for some seconds.

''We're in a shitty situation, we have to get out of here fast if we want to surv...'', Rachel's, the woman who carried a foil in a utility belt at her waist, had her speech abruptly cut in half.

CRACK! KAPAM!

Rachel's head was instantly crushed, then ripped and thrown violently from her body, slamming against the dark-colored wall as she fell to the floor, eyes bulging and bloodshot. Two men covered in a dark veil stood in front of Rachel's headless body, grinning maniacally as they beat up the woman's lifeless remains.

Blood splattered from every corner of her body, staining the clothes of the madmen, who didn't seem to care and continued to beat her corpse without interruption.

CRACK! CRAAACK! CRACK!

The sounds of bones being completely crunched resounded throughout the hall, none of the members could express a decent emotion, completely gaping and in shock.

Even though they were in that cruel world, known as Acaris the magic land, and had witnessed tragedies on Earth, they had never seen scenes as violent as the one unfolding before their eyes.

''W-what the fuck! Rachel! Y-you motherfuckers!'' Angelica screamed, having fallen into complete despair at the sight of her friend's death.

The men grinned, pulling large swords and small knives from the yellowed belt they wore at their waists. They looked like drug addicts who just didn't know what they were doing and were being manipulated.

But Harlan was pretty sure it was just a futile thought. After all, those before them were demons. Like, true demons from hell, that came to punish the humans and the other races after Ground Zero took place in both worlds.

''It was interesting to see you guys get here against all odds. But the game is over now.'', a female voice came from above the hall.

"As for why we're doing this, well... it's fun, I guess?", said Sarian, the Dark Empress and a traitor who led the group to this place to be killed. ''And by the way, we're not crazy if that's what you guys think of us, I swear to you. We don't fit in as simple madmen, we are the kings of madness. Those who work in the shadows of society, just like you, Harlan.''

''You dare compare what you do with a hero's action, you doomed bitch?'', Lucily raged, everyone in the group was kind of scared because they'd never seen her so angry before.

''You're funny, girl. So much talent in an insignificant being, it's a pity you're not part of the same group as us.''

A glow erupted from the bodies of all the traitors and silhouettes, and half of their faces turned a vivid red, almost as if they had been covered by a strange halloween mask. Their eyes were completely painted black, not having even the slightest hint of humanity present in them.

''And before you ask us, yes, we are demons of the highest level and members of the highest positions in the hierarchy of hell, so you guys are mere pawns without identity, do you understand?'' Sarian, the traitorous bitch of the group said, letting her head loll forward in a terrifying way.

"We are only here because our king wanted information from you, but he judged you guys to be unnecessary irritations, and therefore ordered your death. It's a pity that the sword saint king, the golden child, and the other heroes that were described in legends around the entire planet will die this way...'', she said, ''I mean, if you agree to become demons, as we here chose years ago, you guys won't die here...''

''I don't give a fuck about that demonic contract shit, you hellish bitch.'', Harlan said with an irritated tone in his voice.

''Then it's a shame what we have to do with you here and now.''

BAAM!

Lucily and some of the others were crushed by a massive fist, which was almost the size of the room itself and that suddenly filled the place where they stood, leaving only a huge smear of blood on the floor.

They were very tired and their senses could not detect that quick attack that they took. Not even Harlan himself, who was almost a human battle tank, was able to predict this after all.

Their bodies were crumpled on the floor, bones sticking out everywhere and blood moving quickly across the floor. Their eyes still had a little life left, almost as if they hadn't died yet.

Their bodies could be crumpled, and even though their brains were half-destroyed, they were still able to make their bodies writhe in hideous, weird spasms. Bone cracks spread across the room as their bodies spasmed.

It was a disgusting sight and Harlan had an overwhelming urge to turn around and throw up right there, but he controlled himself internally, trying to think of how to get out of there alive.

Now only Harlan and Angelica remained, both desperate and not knowing what action to take in the face of such a situation. Then, in a moment of distraction for both of them, Angelica was grabbed by a huge fist that was able to engulf her entire body.

She was screaming at the top of her lungs as if her throat was going to burst at any moment, and it made Harlan's ears hurt a little.

And then Angelica made a piercing, half-scary sound that overpowered all the new sounds coming from the surrounding room. She reached for Harlan, trying to reach out to him for help, but it was too late.

CRACK!

Angelica's desperate eyes lost its color, turning lifeless as a weird sound came from her muscles. Her body was completely wrecked, and her neck was crooked in a way it shouldn't be.

Her body dropped to the floor, falling like a mere wooden doll. At the exact moment it came into contact with the cold, hard ground, a new strange sound came from its body, making the event even more horrible.

CRACK! STOP! ASK

Her body had been trampled underfoot by several of the traitors and demons, her appearance even more tainted than before, now covered in blood and dirt. One of the traitors even drove a sword right through her chest, cutting off some parts of her clothing and armor and leaving her almost completely naked.

Another traitor grabbed her body, touched her bare breasts, and caressed them, finding it quite amusing as he made some weird moves with what was left of Angelica.

Blood was gushing like a fountain from every part of her body, while her right arm was still extended towards Harlan, motionless in the face of it all. He was in complete shock, it all happened so fast. At the same moment, anger was growing endlessly and limitlessly within him, something that was not very common for the young man.

"YOU MISERABLE FUCKERS", Harlan yelled angrily with no strength left in his body, pointing his sword at the bastards in front of him.

There was no escape from there. He knew, and even if he had, he didn't intend to run away like a coward after all that.

They had all died in just an instant, leaving him alone behind. Even if he managed to get out of there alive, which was undoubtedly an impossible thing to do, he had no reason to live anymore when the love of his life and all his friends had died in that miserable way. He would fight until his last breath, he didn't care about anything anymore.

What was the point of him growing stronger and swearing that he would never let a tragedy like the one that happened in his hometown happen again, if his strength didn't help when he needed it most?

''Shit, SHIT!''

''HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!'' All the silhouettes of the traitors and demons that surrounded the young man began to burst into psychotic laughter.

''To think that someday I would see that beautiful face of yours, which was completely filled with hope and goodwill, become this current mess. AAAhh, it's so nice to see the person I've loved so much for all these years, desperate in front of me.'' Sarah said, approaching with a small dagger in her hand.

Everyone just stood there, enjoying it, almost as if Harlan was just some kind of circus attraction.

SHUNP!

The woman stabbed forward, and instinctively Harlan tried to stop the knife with the force of his own hand.

''Ugh!''

The knife stuck in the young man's palm, stopping a few inches from his right eye. Blood oozed alarmingly from the huge bruise on his hand, and more and more of his strength was drained from his body.

With the last drops of adrenaline and strength he had left, Harlan swung his sword violently to cut that bitch's neck.

SLASH! SHHREK!

His sword only sliced through a small part of the woman's neck, and as if it didn't pose even the slightest danger to her, Sarah continued to smile at him. The woman reveled in Harlan's moments of complete desperation and gave little moans of pleasure every time he tried something different.

TRACK! CRAECKK!

Suddenly, the head of Samael, another traitor, fell to the right and left, then fixed on Kailan. This happened to everyone in the room, including Sarah.

''What the hell is that?''

Harlan's legs gave out suddenly. Those sick fuckers smiled, even more than before, when that happened. Then, the pains he felt filled his entire body at once, his vision that was covered in blood became totally blurry and he lost control of his body for a second.

Harlan froze to the floor, unable to take his eyes off Sarah's crooked head, which was in that unnatural, hideous position. In all his life, Harlan was sure he had never had such a strange and frightening experience as the one he'd had when he arrived in that place of madness.

And as if all this wasn't bizarre enough, now all the madmen surrounded him in the hall, making animalistic sounds and laughing hysterically.

Harlan turned to look at Angelica's body. The woman was lifeless, mute and motionless, completely petrified and bloodied. He wanted to cry, but he stopped himself, he didn't want to please those bastards anymore.

And then, something snapped him out of his stupor…

<𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞?>

<𝐘/𝐍>

The movement and noises of the hall continued. Howls, cheers, laughter and whistles, and the clicks of footsteps. But a strange screen floated before his eyes as if it were something invisible to the people around him.

"To think I was going to hallucinate in my last moments"

He chuckled low and lonely at the thought. That screen was very similar to those in the games he played on Earth, when none of this shit was real.

"Well, fuck everything"

He pressed the yes button, his fingers twitching and his legs not moving anymore.

Tantantan~~

As soon as he pressed that strange button that floated before him, his body went rigid. Arms stretched along his body, and he finally collapsed, exhaling one last breath and losing consciousness. His body relaxed, and blood trickled from his mouth and nose.

'Fuck all that'

'If I could try again, I swear I would do it right'

'And I would do anything to see your smile one more time…''

'Not even if I had to become the devil for it…'

His eyes closed as his consciousness ceased, but he had time to hear the last message from the metallic voice in his mind.
