Chereads / Her Dumb Honour / Chapter 10 - The Accident

Chapter 10 - The Accident

Angie came out of the bathroom, had her pajamas on, and headed towards her bed.

She sat there for a while and then put her phone on the bedside drawer then switched off the lights.

She hadn't fallen asleep when her phone rang, and the caller ID was an unknown number.

"Who could be calling me at 9 p.m? Using a strange number? Some people are really mad," she thought to herself as she picked the call.

Her face had been full of disgust, but the reaction changed to confusion then panic when she heard what the other person had said.

"Where? I can come over immediately," she said, getting out of her bed.

She knocked herself hard on the drawer but ignored the pain and moved to her wardrobe, where she quickly removed a dress, changed into it, and left the house in a hurry.

City hospital.

That's where Angie was rushing to. She had received a call from the police asking her to get there since Evans had been involved in an accident and been rushed to the hospital.

Angie half walked half ran towards the reception desk.

"Angie Brown. I received a call. Do you have a patient by the name of Evans Cooper?" she impatiently asked as she looked around the room, expecting Evans to walk up to her.

The receptionist entered the name in the machine before her and answered, "Yes. Who are you to him?"

"His fiancée. Where is he?"

"I will show you his room, but first, you have to fill in this form," the receptionist told her, handing her a form.

"Okay," she said, taking the form and pen and filling in the details required. The receptionist took the form, filed it then asked Angie to follow her.

"What happened to him? Will he be okay?" Angie asked desperately.

"I don't know, miss. You will have to talk to the doctor," the receptionist said.

She then directed her to use the stairs and that she will see the emergency room from there.

She ran towards the said room and looked in through the window. Evans was lying on that bed, and there were doctors around him, working to stabilize him.

He looked weak, and Angie felt afraid that she would lose him.

She wasn't ready to get married, but she didn't want him dead. She loved their relationship.

She loved him.

'Please, God. Don't take him. Please spare his life,' she mumbled to herself as she looked on.

She thought of calling his parents but decided against it since she didn't know what exactly to tell them. She looked at the time and decided that she would make the necessary calls the following day.

Karen had tried calling Carey, but he had not picked up any calls. She had sent messages, but none was responded to.

She gave up on calling and decided that she would go back to New York and find out herself what the problem was.

"I want to talk to you," she told Carol, who was folding her clothes.

"About him?" Carol asked disinterestedly.

"Please don't be judgmental. Okay?"

"Okay. What is it?" Carol asked as she asked Karen to sit beside her.

Her attention was fully on Karen.

"I have been calling Carey, and he won't pick up my calls. At first, I thought he was annoyed at me, but now I don't know anymore," she said.

"Why should he be annoyed at you?" Carol asked, alarmed.

"He was against me coming home."

"Why is that so? What is the problem if you come home? I keep on telling you that the man is nuts, but you won't listen. These are signs that you should pack up and leave him," Carol said, annoyed.

It was like she was the one being mistreated, and Karen would have laughed had she not been worried.

"You promised not to judge," Karen reminded her calmly.

"I'm not. I'm just stating facts. Really, Karen, you need to listen to me. I have a bad feeling about the guy. He's not who you think he is," Carol pleaded.

"Another judgment passed. You don't know him. That's why you're talking like that. He is temperamental, but he loves Frank and me, and that's what is important."

"Why won't he talk to you then?"

"I don't fucking know. If I had known, I wouldn't be having this conversation with you right now…." Karen said through gritted teeth. She actually almost screamed.

"Well, from experience, if a man loses interest in you, it has to be because of another woman. You suspect he is cheating, don't you? Has he ever done it before?"

"No. I don't suspect. Okay. I don't know what to think. He has never behaved like this before. Correction, please, he hasn't lost interest in me. What do I do?" Karen asked desperately.

"I'll tell you what you don't want to hear or maybe do. Why do you bother asking for my opinion?"

"I—" Karen started, but they were interrupted by the loud ringing of her phone.

She rushed to get it, thinking it was Carey, but it was Angie.
