Chapter 158: A brick wall
Pepper sat on the bed and she touched Starr's hair. She looked at her little face, so innocent and beautiful. The idea that something was trying to hurt her and she couldn't do anything about it instantly became unbearable.
Pepper pressed her palm to her mouth to prevent the sobs that erupted through her like bullets from being audible. Her body shook as sadness flooded her.
Asher opened his eyes. He wasn't really asleep. He could see Pepper's body, it didn't take a second to figure out that she was crying.
Asher wanted to comfort her but he didn't know how. He could barely keep his sorrow contained, it was about the only thing he was channeling his strength towards. So he simply pretended like he was asleep.
"Mom?" Starr called out softly before she opened her eyes.
Pepper quickly wiped her face and put on a smile.
"Hey, baby girl. Who is a brave little girl?" Pepper asked her.
