Chapter 6 - Why are the living so complicated?

"Hi!" she says in a sweet voice. Her voice is so high pitch is sounds like a bird chirping.

"Hi" I answered unimpressed. I can't help it, I'm hardly surprised.

"Everyone is talking about you!" she says cheerly.

Really? Talking about me? Why though? I'm average at best… well, if we take the little ghost situation out of the picture.

Something about her feels odd and after some seconds I realize why, she's not human but she's not death, I felt people like her before, but I don't know what they are.

I think she's pissed I didn't answer her because her demeanor changes and becomes a little too aggressive for my liking.

"Well, you see, you're new meat in this old town. I was excited to meet you, but it appears you're just a nerdy bitch".

Nerdy bitch, huh? is this supposed to scare me? She whips her bleached blond hair to the side and keeps talking.

"Listen here, there's just two rules here, don't mess with us and stay away from Lucas, if you do that, we will be alright" she smiles cockily and pats my shoulder.

I rest my arm in my locker and tilt my head, resting it on my fist. What's wrong with the queen bee type? Is it because of teen hormones? Like an asserting dominance kind of thing?

I look at her straight in the eye for far longer than what someone could call normal, and she fidgets, I think she's feeling uncomfortable.

"What!? Do you have a problem with me!?" she shouts.

"Why would I have a problem with you? I don't even know you" I ask, I'm really curious as to why she feels the need to do this, so I answer for the first time since she started talking.

The only thing as bad as my meddling is my curiosity.

She scoffs and stand straighter "I just want you to learn your place before you start getting ideas".

"I see… Thank you for explaining, while I can't promise to stay out of your way or not talk to this Lucas dude, I will do what I can to stay out of trouble, thank you for worrying" I say seriously, my voice monotonic as always.

I mean, let's be real, how can I stay away from her and her friends or even this Lucas dude when I don't even know who they are? I might see ghosts, but I don't see the future.

I think she got pissed at my answer, but I don't know why. It was not a bad answer, I replied and explained my version. Why are the living so complicated?

"You better take care of yourself, bitch" she says after slamming the locker's and then she walks off.

Is she ok?

I shrug, I'm not going to think about her too much, I look around and everyone already left, late to the first class, well… not a big deal, I don't even know where the class is, I was going to be late either way.

I walked for some time searching my class and I finally found it. I open the door and the teacher greets me.

"Ah! So you finally decide to join us!" he says sarcastically "You should be ashamed of being late, it's not a good first impression miss Brown".

Seriously? What is wrong with his people, first the locker girl and now the teacher? Is everyone here so… aggressive?

"Sir, I'm new here, I wasn't late because I wanted to, I didn't know where the class was. It's not a nice thing to do to put students in the spotlight like that" I reply to his comment, and he freezes.

Was he expecting me to just nod and feel guilty or something? Students are also humans; they deserve respect as well . I can already tell this school is going to be tiring.

I'm expecting he'll says another snarly comment but thankfully he doesn't.

"Sit next to Jos, please" he instructs but I just look at him stupefied.

Who the fuck is Jos? I don't know anyone here. I just stand there waiting for his indications, but they never come.

Well, now I know this teacher is petty, let's remember this and avoid him as well.

"Are you not going to sit?" he complains.

"I don't know who's Jos" I explain and he flinches.

"Oh… sorry, everyone knows each other here so I just thought…" he stops talking "Jos, raise your hand".

Alright, forget the petty part, he seems decent. A girl with black hair raises her hand and I walk towards her. I flinch just a moment.

'She's not human either' I think.

"Hi" she whispers, and I nod. I realize she's painting her nails during class, that's an amazing skill if I say so myself.

Nail polish smells awful but for some reason the one she's using just doesn't smell, also the teacher hasn't even noticed what she's doing. Yep, awesome skill.

"That was awesome by the way".

I'm confuse, what was awesome? I think she noticed my confusion because she explains herself.

"How you stood up to his bullshit" she whispers.

"Mmm, I see. Thank you for the praise" I say seriously, and she giggles.

"Are you always like that?"

Like that? I don't understand what she means.

"What do you mean?" I ask confused.

"So… serious? blunt?" she mouths a 'duh'.

"Oh…" I suppose my voice makes me sound serious, but I can't help it, dealing with death does that to you.

Being around death makes you appreciate life but at the same time makes you a little numb to the world. The typical bless and curse.

"I suppose you could say I'm always like this" I say after nodding.

"Well, I think that's nice, what class do you have after this?"

"Chemistry with Mrs…" my breath hitches when I see the name in my schedule "Mrs. Rogers…".

"Yeah, then that's a free class, she had an accident, and they haven't found a substitute teacher".

"Is she… is she safe?" I ask, I want to make sure she's healthy or in the hospital recovering from her injuries.

"She's alright, just a couple bruises but her daughter died" Jos says sadly.
