Chapter 33 - Chapter 33

Pregnant..Pregnant. Mara kept repeating the words in her head. "I know this isn't exactly what you wanted," he licked his lips. "I don't want you to worry about this right now, because Mara whatever you want to do, I'm ok with it. I just want you to be ok."

Mara looked at him speechless. Her heart rate started to quicken up. Just then Jillian came back in, "Mom, it's grandma, she wants to talk to you.'' She handed her mom the phone. Sam got up from the bed, "Jillian I'm gonna call Wiley and check in with the station, I'll be back." She nodded.

Mara rushed her mother off the phone, she couldn't deal with her right now. She just laid there in shock, not sure what to think. Pregnant? How could she be? She was on the pill. I mean sure she missed a day here or there. She hadn't always been so careful with it since she wasn't having sex before Sam. But she thought she had been on point the last few months.

The shock was still there, but somewhere she felt nervous or what it, excited? "Mom, I'm so glad you're ok," Jillian was hugging her. "I was so scared, thank god for Sam mom. He found you." "What were you doing?" Mara took a deep breath, "Jason, he was in town and we met for a drink to catch up. I was driving home and I guess I was just going too fast. I'm so sorry Jilly, I was so careless."

"Oh, mom, that could happen to anyone, I'm just glad you're ok." Jillian's long brown hair fell around as she continued hugging her mom. "Hunny how long have you been here, you need to go back to school."

"I just wanted to wait till you woke up mom. I couldn't leave until I knew you would be ok." Mara gave her a kiss. "How was Sam?" "He's been great, mom, really. He found you and picked me up from school. But you could see he was ready to lose it. He really loves you." Mara smiled. "I love him too. I think, I think I might marry him Jilly, how do you feel about that?" Jillian smiled, "Mom," she almost jumped. She hugged her again, "Ouch Jilly," Mara laughed. "Mom's that's amazing, I think that's awesome."

Mara closed her eyes, thinking how lucky she was to have such an amazing daughter, so caring. Then she remembered she was pregnant again and looked at her stomach.

Sam stood in the doorway watching them hug. He had this bittersweet feeling in his chest. He really never thought that much about being a dad. But now that he knew Mara was pregnant, he felt such excitement he couldn't explain. Sam didn't want to get his hopes up though, especially if she lost it. He knew Mara didn't want more kids and wasn't at an ideal age, he didn't know what she would want. He could only hope.

The next couple weeks were a blur. Once they discharged Mara she had some physical therapy for her leg and multiple appointments for her eye. She had lost 30% peripheral vision in her left eye, but the doctor was hopeful it might all come back. Sam had moved most of her clothes and personal items to his house. Whenever he couldn't be home, he had Pam checking in on her. Jillian has also come for the past two weekends. Things were finally starting to get back to normal, but they had a big appointment coming up.

Mara and Sam agreed not to rush into a rash decision about the baby. Her body had already been through so much, Sam really wanted her to rest before she decided anything. But she had made an appointment with an OBGYN to go over all the options. She was pretty sure her mind was made up.

Sam opened the door for her and they walked in the waiting room. After they checked in and waited about 10 minutes they took them back to a patient room. Mara had changed in a gown and Sam was holding her hand waiting for the doctor. "What are you thinking?" Sam asked. She smiled at him, "I'm not sure, I guess I just want to know if everything is ok."

The doctor came in, "Hi there Mara, I'm Dr. Kramer. So I see in your chart from the hospital, you had a positive pregnancy test about three weeks ago?" "Yes, I was in a car accident and that's when we found out." She answered. The doctor sat on a chair and moved by the ultrasound machine. "Ok well first things first, let's take a look. Mara laid back on the table and pulled her gown up. The doctor put some jelly on her stomach, apologizing for the coldness.

After two minutes of rubbing the wand over her stomach, they heard a heartbeat. Mara and Sam looked at each other smiling. The computer showed a little white peanut floating on the screen. Sam was literally frozen, his eyes glued to the screen. "Babe, breath," Mara said and he remembered to take a full breath.

"Ok, well everything looks good, judging from the size here, it looks like you are about 9 weeks," the doctor said after pressing a few buttons on the computer. "Now Mara, since you're 42, this is considered a high risk pregnancy. The baby does have more risk of Down's syndrome and other genetic abnormalities. But plenty of women have been having healthy babies well into their 40s. Especially now that we know what's healthy and what to avoid. I do have to ask, of course is this a wanted pregnancy?"
