"Argh…" Lucas grimaces in pain at the unusual sudden headache. It was like someone had butchered the part of his head with sharp knives persistently over and over.
As the agony gradually drives him mad, Lucas tries his best to awaken from whatever nightmare he currently faces.
"Wake up, Lucas! You cannot fall unconscious at this time!"
"Lucas!"
"I don't wanna die…."
"Mom, dad, help me…."
His silent struggle slowly halted as his consciousness drifted into nothingness.
…
Where am I?
Am I dead?
In a moment of confusion, a giant blurry light suddenly invaded his vision. Basking in the warm radiance, Lucas sensed his mind soothed at its sight. Subconsciously, his body starts to dive forward in an attempt to get closer to the source.
While the blurry light grew more prominent as he got closer, his strength began to recover at astonishing speed. At last, when Lucas thought he had reached the end, the giant light abruptly dispersed, clouding his vision with nothing but a blinding white and red color.
'Eh? I can move my body. I should've completely awakened right now.'
Driven by that thought, Lucas unhesitatingly opened his eyes and sat up, trying to calm down his erratic heartbeat.
'What was that dream?' Lucas mentally lamented while massaging his forehead. Even if it was just a dream, the pain felt so real!
'I need medicine.' Lucas was about to get off his bed when he noticed something wasn't right. As if being struck by lightning, his gaze turned dull.
His study desk, along with the note papers scattered over it, was all gone now. Even his personal computer was absent for some reason.
This situation made Lucas's mind blank as his gaze filled with a strange and suspicious look.
It took him several seconds to recover before he frantically looked around, only to realize he wasn't in his room anymore. Instead of a soft spring bed, he sat on a slightly large wooden bed.
On top of that, he had no single recollection of whose room this belonged to.
"Where am I?" No matter how Lucas tried to soothe his mind, he still couldn't help but panic. Worse of all, various wild thoughts started to emerge inside his mind, which brought his nervousness to the next level.
At that moment, when Lucas was on the verge of deciding to storm off the room, the door clicked open gently.
Lucas's body instantly became tense, while his facial expression turned vigilant as though about facing a final boss.
"What a reckless brat! Are you planning to commit suicide by wearing such thin clothes in this extreme weather?" A roar filled with rage and a scolding tone transmitted into Lucas's ears.
Lucas instantly wanted to retort that with technology, called space heater, humans nowadays shall not be afraid of being frozen to death. However, he stopped himself after registering the man's face that slowly revealed under the dim candlelight.
The man looks in his mid-fifties with a few wrinkles that have formed already. Despite his features already showing signs of aging, his hair remained black with only a few strands of grayish hair that perked up. He had donned himself a simple linen shirt with brown-coat serving as the outer clothes.
After a few seconds of studying the man's expression, Lucas suspiciously asked, "Who are you, grandpa? And where am I?"
Although Lucas got the feeling the old man wouldn't hurt him, based just on the fact the latter didn't do anything weird while he fell unconscious, he couldn't help but become wary at the man's hidden intention by bringing him here.
Noticing the look Lucas threw at him; the old man scoffed inwardly. "Relax, you can leave this place as soon as I confirm your condition is stable enough." he then added after catching Lucas's dubious gaze remaining fixed on him. "Brat, had I didn't rescue you back then, you'd have turned into a frozen statue now. So, quickly withdraw that expression of yours, or else this old man wouldn't hesitate to kick you out of my house."
Lucas, detecting the seriousness in his words, immediately shifted his gaze elsewhere and repeated his question in a meek voice, "Who are you, grandpa? And where exactly is your house?"
This time, learning from his lesson, Lucas didn't dare to use an inquiring tone and instead softened his voice in the hope of not flaring up the man's anger further.
"You can call this old man Haytham. As for our location, we are still within the territory of Yale City." Seeing the blank look on Lucas's face, Haytham thought Lucas still doubted his words. Inwardly sighing, Haytham beckoned Lucas to approach the tightly shut curtain. When both of them arrived, Haytham drew apart the closed curtain, and Lucas instinctively shut his eyes at the sudden light.
The moment Lucas took the view opposite him, his eyes widened in disbelief and fear. His breath hitched, and his heartbeat escalated in jitter.
"If even the sight of Yale's Tower couldn't convince you, I don't know what to do anymore," Haytham said with a helpless laugh while silently gazing at the stunned Lucas.
Truth be told, after seeing the man's attire, Lucas had a ridiculous thought about where he might be. He just didn't have the courage to entertain that crazy idea for various reasons. And now, reality slaps him hard.
"Yale…" Lucas mumbled in a daze. If he thought the old man was still lying before, now he was ultimately convinced by his words. Because, since when did the Earth have a skyscraper made of transparent crystalline? In addition, unlike modern-shaped houses, the surrounding building screams a theme of the middle-aged era. It only means two things, either he's now dreaming, or this is a whole different world.
At that moment, a deafening ring of a bell resonated from the tower.
"Woah, can't believe it's noon already. Time sure flies pretty fast." Haytham murmured, but Lucas wasn't in the right state of mind to listen to him.
The scenario he just thought to be insane is now proven to be true.
"I really got transported into another world."
