Chapter 10 - Unexpected Invitation

"Those incidents with the church," Cyrus mentioned.

"What about them?" Flora asked, turning her head. She ran her fingers through her hair as the colour changed from white back to black, her horns shrinking down and hiding behind her bangs and her eyes changing from purple to brown.

"They've already brought you a lot of attention, so why continue disguising yourself?" Cyrus wondered, remembering the first time they met.

"Most people only know a demon-kin works at the guild. Outside of the guild and church, not many know my identity," Flora explained.

"Does your spirit magic affect their memories," Cyrus asked, curious if she had that kind of talent at such a young age.

"It's not me," Flora's voice trailed off.

Cyrus nodded and dropped the subject. They were getting close to town anyway, so continuing this conversation wouldn't be a good idea.

"I'll take this back," She reached over to grab the sack that contained the boars.

"Thanks for bringing me along," Cyrus states as he hands the sack over.

"It was a nice change," Flora smiled and headed to the guild.

Cyrus headed back to his place, as his body felt exhaustion for the first time, having been awake for days on end. So when he got home, he laid down and got some rest.

When morning arrived, Cyrus went to the guild for breakfast. Angela soon after and plopped down across from him. Her face hit the table, shaking it slightly.

"Ow," Angela mumbled.

"I'd ask what's wrong, but you have to apologize to the table first," Cyrus joked.

"Oh, ha ha," Angela murmured before turning her head. Heavy bags were under her eyes as she let out a long yawn.

"Were you so excited for your tag you couldn't sleep?" Cyrus asked.

"Endless questions since I was with a demon-kin, and if I don't want this to be a continuous thing, I shouldn't associate with them," Angela responded lazily.

"So I guess our party's disbanded?" Cyrus concluded. It was amusing teaming up with her, but it wouldn't be any loss if they stopped.

"No!" She shouted, immediately sitting up in the chair. "I'm more stubborn than them, so I'm not gonna lose."

"Lose? When did it become a competition?" Cyrus wondered.

"Keep your eyes forward, never stray from what is right, and your perseverance shall be rewarded," Angela quoted.

"That sounds like something from the church. You only seem to remember what you want to," Cyrus commented as Ezra walked into the guild.

"Oh no, they found me," Angela panicked as her eyes met Ezra's.

"I knew I would find you here," Ezra commented as she walked over.

"Where else am I gonna go; this is the only place where the church doesn't have much influence," Angela pointed out.

"Anyways, I came to get you-" Ezra started.

"But I just through the questions and paperwork!" Angela interrupted, looking to be on the brink of tears.

"That's not why I'm here. The church chose to join the escort and head to the capital," Ezra explained, "so for the next week, you'll be on your own," She spoke, turning to Cyrus.

"An entire week at the capital, a more suffocating place than here," Her head collapses back onto the table.

"I don't understand why you hate it so much. If we make a good impression, then it'll be great for our future," Ezra explained.

Lifting her head a bit, Angela let out a large sigh before looking at Cyrus. Her eyes lit up as a smile crossed her face. "Would you like to join us?"

"You have to be joking," Ezra fretted.

"I think they'll have a perfect impression of me," Angela grinned.

"No, the church won't allow it. Do you know what could happen if you bring him?" Ezra panicked, hoping to convince her friend out of this crazy idea.

"Don't I get a say?" Cyrus interrupted.

"No," They both remarked, throwing Cyrus off guard.

"Well, fine then," Cyrus relented.

"Why are you so insistent on this?" Ezra asked.

"The entire trip will be boring if only church members are present!" Angela exclaimed.

"Your willing to inconvenience everyone because you'll be bored?" Ezra tried to clarify.

"You know I can't go unless the church here agrees to take me. So how about asking before you continue this back and forth." Cyrus butted in, wanting this end.

"I'll go ask right now," Angela got up and started to rush towards the door, being intercepted by the guild master.

"Before you go rushing off, here," The guild master handed Angela her new tag, which had a hole at the bottom containing a red gem.

"Thanks," Angela smiled and ran out, with Ezra quickly following.

The guild master walked over to Cyrus, "you seem to be having fun," he joked, handing him a silver tag.

You have an odd definition of fun," Cyrus commented.

"Probably better than yours," The guild master laughed and headed back to the desk.

He expected Angela would be stuck at the church and figured he might as well do a quest. However, as he looked over the board, he suddenly remembered the guild's rules. He needed to be in a party to do quests.

"I guess I better check if anyone is looking for an extra member," Cyrus turned to the guild master, who shook his head.

"You better wait a day; if Angela does come back, she'll be disappointed that you're gone," The guild master smiled.

"Don't see how that's my concern," Cyrus sighed. "Alright, just one day."

Cyrus sat back down and sighed again, "now, what am I going to do for the day."

Half an hour later, a couple of soldiers entered the guild, "Can I help you?" Guild master Adam asked harshly, expecting another fight.

"The church is summoning Cyrus; we're here to get him," one soldier states.

"Now what?" Cyrus complained as he stood up and walked over to the guards.

"Please come with us," the guard demands, glaring at Cyrus.

Cyrus relented and nodded his head. The guards left the guild and began their walk to the church. One walked in front, and the other behind, the one in front wasn't pleased about escorting him to the church. However, the one behind seemed more relaxed, simply seeing this as his duty and didn't care who it was.

As they approached the church, Cyrus got a clear view of the five heroes featured in the stained glass windows. The Angel's Blade, Eden. A beautiful woman with long blonde flowing hair. The glass depicted the sun's rays coming from above, reflecting off her full plated armour, wielding a large, two-handed blade that looked like crystal. She had the sword embedded into the ground with both hands holding the hilt.

The Heavenly Spear, Julia, is a woman with an androgynous look. She had short spiky black hair and wielded a bright red spear in one hand, pointing to the ground. Her armour was a mixture of metal and leather, giving her more agility. The glass depicted her striking down a demon below.

Holy Bishop John, the one hero Cyrus disliked. While depicting him as someone holding a book in one hand and a simple staff in the other, Cyrus held nothing but contempt for him. He had short brown hair under a white hood from his robe. It made the hero look humble, but Cyrus knew he was a cunning annoyance.

The fourth window featured The Great Martyr, Mary. A woman on her hands and knees praying to the sun. Her hair was under a red and black hood as her arms rested against a rock that lay upon a green meadow.

The last window held The Princess of Light, Chloe. Another blonde woman with her hair tied in a ponytail and wielded a thin sword pointed to the sky. She wore a few strips of white cloth that covered parts of her body. Seeing it made Cyrus chuckle, but he held it in since the guards kept a close eye on him. Besides the hair and sword, everything the window represented was wrong about her.

"I wonder if I can make myself the sixth hero?" Cyrus whispered to himself as he looked at the windows.

The guards stopped in front of a small room and stood on either side of the entrance. Cyrus stepped inside, where Angela, Ezra and Father Maxwell awaited him, with Angela turning and waving her hand eagerly.

"Glad you could join us," Maxwell spoke with a false smile.

"What is it that you want?" Cyrus responded with a mix of sarcasm and hostility. The two guards nearby narrowed their eyes as one put their hand on his blade, waiting for an excuse to use it.

"By the request of Angela and in agreement with the church, you are to accompany us to the capital," Maxwell stated.

Cyrus stood there for a few moments as Maxwell's words slowly sunk in. "What!?"
