Chapter 14 - A Necromancer Arrives

Brian escorted Cyrus through the church, not trusting the demon-kin to be alone. Angela and Ezra had to help elsewhere as he wanted to keep his students away from the demi as much as possible.

While walking down a hall, a man with a blue robe passed by, causing Cyrus to turn and smile to himself. He knew the person who walked by was a necromancer, as he could sense a magic bottle that contained lost spirits, easily manipulated souls that were perfect for raising corpses.

"What are you looking at?" Brian asked.

"If you didn't notice, then perhaps it's nothing," Cyrus responded and shrugged as Brian gave a confused look. He had no interest in telling Brian about the necromancer, as any damage caused to the church was always a win in his eyes.

The necromancer would pass through the halls mumbling to himself as he ran into Angela, who was skipping her duties.

"Who're you?" Angela asked.

The man would open up the bottle as a lost spirit flew out and right into Angela. "I didn't want to waste one," The man lamented between his mumbles, as Angela collapsed to the ground.

A few minutes later, Ezra would find Angela lying on the ground, her body sweating as her breathing was heavy.

"Angela!" Ezra cried and lightly shook her friend, hoping to wake her.

"This wasn't how I hoped things would go," Cyrus mumbled to himself as he turned around walked around the corner with Brian right behind him.

"What're you doing? Brian asked, seeing Cyrus turn around. Brian would follow him as they came upon Angela lying on the ground and rushed to his student's side. "Who did this?"

"Probably that person we walked by. He seemed kinda suspicious," Cyrus stated as he looked over Angela.

"If he seemed suspicious, why didn't you say anything!" Brian snapped.

"A demon-kin accusing a member of the church of being suspicious, that sounds like a wonderful idea," Cyrus sarcastically pointed out.

Brian could only glare at Cyrus as Ezra sighed and turned to the demon-kin, "do you know what's wrong?"

"A forced possession on a living person, it's an uncommon use of a lost spirit," Cyrus explained.

"I thought spirits couldn't possess a person," Ezra pointed out.

"They can't. If you force a spirit into a living body, then the invading spirit is rejected," Brian countered and turned to Cyrus, "you obviously have no idea what you're talking about."

"It seems there are gaps present in your already limited understanding." Cyrus shakes his head in disappointment. "Spirits can reside inside the body, like passengers on a wagon. However, the body will fight off an invading spirit, or you can purge it with holy magic."

"I'll do that immediately," Ezra kneeled down and cast a cleansing spell on Angela's body. As she started to glow, a small red spirit flew out from the body and faded away.

"Did the spirit pass on?" Ezra asked, looking over to Brian.

"Of course," Brian smiled at Ezra as Cyrus rolled his eyes.

Angela's eyes would slowly open, looking up at everyone. Blinking a few more times before forcing her body up, "that bastard!"

"Take it easy. We found you passed out on the ground, so how are you feeling?" Ezra asked, breathing a sigh of relief.

"I'm just a bit cold, but I'll be fine in a few moments?" Angela reassured her friend.

"You don't need to push yourself. You can take more than a few moments," Ezra stated, worrying for her friend.

"Do you know why a necromancer is even here?" Cyrus asked, turning to Brian.

Brian shook his head, causing Cyrus to sigh and close his eyes, "Give me a moment." He would cast a wide range detection spell, looking for the magic bottle the necromancer carried. "Found him. He's underground."

"Impossible, only the Reverence has access to the crypt. No one else knows how to get there," Brain explained.

"A crypt, as in a place that has corpses? Seems like the perfect place for a necromancer to me," Cyrus remarked sarcastically.

"I've been down there," Angela interjected, "it's where I hid when I didn't want to attend class." Angela thought she heard something crack within Brian when those words left her mouth.

"You found a way into the one place no one but the Reverence is allowed and lied about where you hid every time you skipped class," Brian was doing his best to remain calm.

"Angela, can you take us there?" Cyrus leaned forward and helped Angela up.

"It's this way," as Angela started heading down the hall, Ezra would briefly glance at Brian before following her friend.

"We must tell the Reverence they'll know what to do," Brian protested.

Cyrus could only sigh. He needed this half-wit with him to avoid any backlash that could happen. "So you're trusting a demon-kin, with your two students, in a forbidden crypt, to fight a necromancer."

"Of course not!" Brian shouted his attention back on the issue at hand. "Alright, I'll go with you."

Angela led everyone to a small library, "It's over here." Walking over to a bookshelf, she slipped behind it through a small crack.

"There isn't anything back there," Brian stated as he grabbed the bookshelf and pulled it away from the wall to prove it. Behind the bookshelf was just a wall. "See, there isn't anything here."

"Yea, not even Angela is back here," Cyrus pointed out, causing Brian to make a double-take.

"Where did she go?" Ezra asked as she walked behind the bookshelf.

A small part of the wall started to shift and was pushed to the side, as Angela appeared on the other side "secret passage!" She shouted enthusiastically.

"How did you even find this?" Ezra asked, needing to crawl on the ground to go through the opening.

"I leaned on it when I was hiding one day," Angela replied as she moved out of the way so her friend could get in. Cyrus and Brian also had to crawl to fit through the small opening.

The group crawled through the opening, ending up on a staircase with only the light from the library shining in. Brian would wave his hand as a large white orb appeared and lit up the area. The crypt looked about a hundred years old, built after the capital's destruction as cobwebs line the ceiling and torch holders line the walls.

"The stairs leading up lead to the locked door, so we'll have to head down," Angela stated as she took the lead.

"If the necromancer is here, then we should be wary. Down here, we have the bodies of saints and many holy warriors," Brian explained.

As they reached the bottom of the stairs, the orb of light would float forward, showing corridors going in every direction.

"So, what person do you think the necromancer is here for?" Cryus asked, already having a good idea who it is. A place built a hundred years ago to house holy warriors could only mean one person.

"I don't know," Brian shook his head.

After another cast of detection, Cyrus pointed down the third corridor. "This way."

As the light orb moved down the hall, rows of empty eye sockets turned towards the light, wielding broken shields, old weapons, and rusty armour that clanged against their skeletal body.

"You guys just had to bury them with their weapons," Cryus lamented.
