Chereads / It Lurks Within / Chapter 10 - APPREHENSION

Chapter 10 - APPREHENSION

What is the whole point of life? This specific question danced around in Amelia's head as she was crouched down on the toilet floor. A new wave of nausea hit her like a giant boulder wrecking an old building. She gripped the toilet seat firmly as vomit came gushing out of her mouth and into the clear toilet water. 'Well, there goes my breakfast and lunch' She thought. Amelia had found a dead rat in her tuna sandwich during lunch time. She has taken a huge bite of the sandwich before she noticed the head of a lifeless rat protruding from the untouched part of the sandwich. Amelia could clearly remember how disgusted and shocked she felt. As she hurriedly made her way to the toilet, Amelia could distinctively hear soft laughter and giggles around her. She could feel hot tears building up but held them back. 'don't cry, don't cry' she told herself repeatedly. Wiping her mouth, Amelia pushed herself up from the neon green tiles and tardily made her way to the door. Amelia expected to see an empty hallway, but to her surprised, she was standing face to face with the cheer team. Britney, the new captain of the cheer team, walked over to where Amelia stood. Amelia had never interacted with Britney back when she was the captain of the cheer squad, but she knew Britney was very introverted and could barely hold a conversation with anyone. How Britney became the captain was beyond Amelia's understanding.

"Hey, Amelia....we need to talk."

Amelia was in disbelief.

"You want to talk to me?" Amelia said, pointing a finger at herself.

Britney looked slightly irritated.

"You're the only one standing right in front of me….right?"

Amelia flushed with embarrassment.

"Yeah, that's true."

Britney sighed.

"So, what do you want to talk to about?"

Amelia watched Britney as her eyes darted everywhere, like she was being cautious about something.

"Let's not talk here, come with us."

Amelia nodded and walked right behind them.

"This....is the girl's dressing room." Amelia said. "Um, obviously we can see that." Britney said, her hands placed on her hips.

"So why exactly did you bring me here? I thought you just wanted to talk."

The other girls who stood behind Britney all let out small giggles. Amelia looked confused. Her curiosity increasing by the minute.

"Oh, you silly goose. Why else would we bring you to a closed room?" Britney said.

"Wha-"

Amelia was interrupted when Britney landed a firm slap across her face. Amelia stumbled back a little, her facial expression showing pure shock.

"To think that you are so utterly clueless is baffling." "W-What are you talking about?"

Britney dramatically face palmed herself as she let out a frustrated sigh.

"Don't tell me you've actually forgotten how you treated us?"

Amelia stood there dumbfounded not uttering a sound.

"Remember Caitlyn? The girl you bullied for being fat? Well, I don't except you to remember her. We were all insignificant to you." Britney said.

'who's Caitlyn?' Amelia thought. To say the truth, Amelia didn't actually care. Her mind was fixed on leaving this place as soon as possible but that, seemed impossible. Britney and the girls from the cheer team stood right in front of the door, intentionally blocking the entrance.

"I know you're not aware, but Caitlyn is in the hospital right now battling for her life."

Britney crossed her arms and continued.

" I heard she tried to kill herself by overdosing on a drug. And guess who's fault it is?" Britney said as she stared at Amelia.

"I don't know."

Britney's face twisted into an awful scowl

"You don't know!?" she said, landing another painful slap across Amelia's face.

This time, the impact made Amelia fall flat on her bottoms. Amelia was surprised on how weak how body had become. She had little to no appetite, making her eat less which drastically reduced her weight. She held her cheek which was throbbing harshly.

"You are an awful person, always making people around you feel like absolute trash. I've always hated you, and I'm not the only one."

As Britney said this, the girl began to move towards her, forming a circle around her.

"Now that your daddy's no longer the principal, you've lost all your popularity and influence. Say, how does that feel?"

Britney was grinning from ear to ear. It was quite obvious that she was enjoying this.

"You getting bullied and isolated made it easier for us to bring you here. After all, no one even wants you around anymore."

Britney grabbed a handful of Amelia's hair and pulled it so hard, it made her cry out in pain.

"L-Let go." Amelia said as she struggled to break free from her grip.

Britney grabbed her hair harder.

" Huh? I don't think I heard you right. " She said, slapping Amelia across the face for the third time. Amelia let out a sharp cry as she winced in pain. Her cheeks felt like they had been stuffed.

"please, just let me go….." Amelia said with a faint voice.

"Of course we'll let you go...only when we're through with you." Britney replied.

Maria stared at the building in shock and awe, mostly shock. She had not expected him to bring her here on a date. Maria looked a Trevor with a confused look on her face.

"Really? An arcade?" she said, tilting her head to the side.

"What's wrong with an arcade?"

"Is that a rhetorical question?"

Trevor sighed.

"Arcades are fun."

"I know they're fun, but it's not a place two grown adults would visit for a date. I'm not even dressed for this!" Amelia said as she looked at her wine coloured body fitted gown.

She complimented the gown with black stilettos and a black purse. Trevor held her right hand and planted a gentle kissed on it.

"You look breath taking."

Amelia couldn't help but blush.

"Don't worry, it'll be fun. Just trust me." Trevor said as he led her into the building.

Amelia couldn't remember the last time she went into an arcade. It was filled with different coloured lights, giving the place a groovy vibe. Pop music boomed from the speakers. The placed was packed with people playing different games.

"What should we play first?" Trevor said.

Amelia just shrugged her shoulders. She wasn't particularly excited or inclined to play any game.

"Let's check out that one first." Trevor said, pointing at a shooting game.

Amelia sighed and let him take the lead. He held her hand and took her towards the game.

"Whoa, the gun is really big." Amelia said as she picked up the gun.

It looked like guns you would find in a science fiction movie.

"Shooting games are usually multi-player, but seems like this one is a single player game."

"Then, you go first." Amelia said as she handed him the gun.

"Nope, you're going first."

"Me?? But I've never played a shooting game before." Trevor chuckled softly.

"Don't worry, I'll guide you."

As reluctant as she was, Amelia agreed either way. Trevor slipped two metal coins in and the screen came to live. It was an apocalyptic set up and you were being chased by these mutated spiders. Your objective was to shoot them all before they catch up with you. "What do I do?? " Maria said frantically.

"Relax."

Trevor stood right behind Maria. He slid his hands over hers and held the gun. His head was nuzzled on her left shoulder.

"Good, now aim properly."

Maria could feel her ear go hot. His head was so close to her ear, it felt like he was whispering directly into it. The word killed, written in big bold blue letters appeared on the screen whenever she killed the mutants.

"You're doing great." Trevor said.

No matter how much she tried, Maria couldn't focus on the game. Trevor's body was driving her crazy. She could feel his chest press against her back. Maria could feel a tingling sensation between her legs. She was surprised on how he could get her like this. Maria couldn't recall the last time she had sex. It was probably more than two years ago. 'that's why my hormones are going haywire' She thought. YOU WON popped up on the large monitor.

"Hey, you weren't bad at all." Trevor said as he released his hold on her.

She bit her lip, wishing she could tell him to her again. "Well, it was quite fun." Amelia lied.

Once she was five seconds into the game, she lost all focus.

"Come on, there are lots of things we could try." They both walked around the arcade, trying to decide on their next game.

"How about this one?" Amelia said, pointing towards the car racing game.

"Looks fun, let's play it."

They both hopped into the Cars after Trevor had put in a coin. Maria looked through the character selection menu and chose a red haired boy. She looked over at Trevor, who had picked a blonde girl.

"Ready?" Trevor asked.

Amelia nodded and pressed start. Trevor turned the wheel vigorously as he tried to bypass Amelia and all the other NPC'S. And just like that, he was in first place. Amelia kept hitting building which eventually caused her car to blow up, automatically disqualifying her. Trevor made it to the finish line, coming in second position.

"I suck at this." Amelia said as she climbed out of the plastic car.

"Don't worry, we'll find a game you can play."

Amelia could see that he was having so much fun. His whole face was gleaming with excitement. "Alright, let's play other games."

Trevor nodded. He look her hand and led her through the arcade.

"Wow! It's 7pm already. I didn't know the time flew by so fast."

Trevor chuckled.

"Well, time does fly when you're having fun."

Maria smiled at him. He was right, she did have lots of fun today. She never expected to have this much fun in an arcade that was made for teenagers.

"I know it's quite late, but can we take a short stroll?." "sure, after all the games, I really need to clear my head." Amelia said.

They walked slowly, savoring the feel of the wind on their skin.

"How are you so good at games? You won almost every game we played."

Trevor chuckled.

"I've always loved games ever since I was a kid. I still love them, but don't play them as much as I did as a child."

"Wow, it's nice to have something you're really interested in."

Trevor nodded in agreement.

"What about you? You seem like you have a lot of hobbies."

"Well..."

Maria thought about it. She didn't really have anything she was invested in except work. The closest thing to a hobby she had down was join the art club back in high school. She only joined because the school made it mandatory for everyone to join a club.

"Hm, I don't really have time for hobbies."

"That's fine too."

They kept walking until they saw a clearing. The area had a small pond with soft grass surrounding it.

"Wow, I didn't know there was a pond here." Maria said as she walked over to it.

The moon had illuminated the water, making it look sparkly. Maria stood there, admiring the small body of water.

"I've heard an urban legend about this pond." Trevor said as he joined her by the pond.

Maria looked at him and raises an eyebrow.

"And what is this urban legend about?"

"It says that if a man and woman were to kiss close to this very pond under a full moon, they will become soul mates."

Maria couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous it sounded.

"You made that up didn't you?"

Trevor smiled at her.

"This is the part where you kiss me."

Maria playfully hit him on his shoulder as she giggled. "Should I kiss you?"

Trevor paused for a second and turned to her.

"Who wouldn't want to kiss a gorgeous girl like you." Maria slowly wrapped her hands around his neck, their lips almost touching.

"Then, let's make that wish come true." She said softly. Trevor slid his hand on her back and drew her closer. Their bodies collided, making their lips meet. The kiss grew hot and passionate every second and they were enjoying every bit of it. 'not a bad way to spend the weekend' Maria thought.
