"Here." the girl hands me her phone. "Are you sure you don't want to call the state troopers?"

"No, I'd rather call my family." I smile, grateful for her kindness. "I'll get my boyfriend to help me with the police."

I told her my car went off the road last night and badly injured my dog in the crash. We'd been walking all night and finally arrived here. Now, Vishnu lay on the porch outside, drinking more water. He shied away from the girl when she tried to get near him, and for a second, I'd worried he'd attack her, but he stayed calm since I was with him. She thought I'd rescued him from a fight ring, which was why he looked like he did. I should write kids' books one day since I'm good at making things up.

With my story set, I now had a new problem. Who did I call?

'You don't know any numbers.' I grumble to myself, feeling stupid for not learning at least one number. 'You're going to have to figure something else out.'
