"Sunny?" Freddy sat beside Liz, taking her hand and trying to get her attention, but she couldn't look away from me. "Sunny, baby, you need to breathe."
Sunny. Liz's middle name and the one Renee had been calling her on and off for the past month. The fact Freddy was using it now wasn't by chance. Liz hadn't answered to her name for a few minutes, and I was worried she was about to have a panic attack. Her skin had gone pale. She wasn't moving and was holding her breath. Maybe telling her had been a mistake.
I didn't speak either.
What more could I say? I'm sorry. It felt like a bigger slap in the face, and explaining why I hadn't shared all this before wouldn't make things better. So, all I could do was sit there and watch as Freddy tried to get through to his mate. Maybe I should've taken Trevor's offer to stay with us if we needed him, but I'd been sure Liz could handle this. Had I miscalculated her ability to cope?
