I shot up, my body covered in sweat as my heart raced.
The sound of a baby crying pricked my ears and was enough of a focus for me to calm down. I looked around the dark room, seeing the light in the hallway and the turned-down sheets on Nefera's side of the bed. The crying was coming from Penelope's room, and I could hear Nefera trying to soothe my princess.
Scrambling from the bed, I threw on clothes and ran out of the bedroom. Pen-Pen sounded so distressed, What I'd seen in my dream was so vivid I worried we were under attack. Yet, when I walked into the nursery, I found Nefera pacing back and forth, Penelope in her arms, purple from how much she was crying. The room was chaotic. All Pen-Pen's stuffed animals scattered around the floor, the books off the shelves, and the rocking chair by the window on its side.
