Emotional damage might sound funny, but it isn't.
When you let a dam break, it leaves a trail of destruction you can't so easily repair, especially not quickly. The wound stays open and fresh; if you make the wrong choice, it'll remain open and won't heal. That's where Ivan and I were right now, and the world demanded we make one choice when we knew we had to make another. This was the worst time to break down, but when it happens, it's going to happen. Unfortunately, no one would accept that as a valid reason.
Since that day in New Mexico, multiple sides slowly encircled us. It happened gradually, and with how damaged I was at that point, it was impossible to realize. Then again, a lot of that must've been a long time coming. We were blind, deaf, and tied up and hadn't known it. The people against us took advantage of that incapacity to gain leverage, and now we were the ones on loose ground.
