"Here," I handed Tatiana an envelope. Motioning for her to put it in the backpack Zoe had given her. "There's some money for you to spend. When you run low, call, and I'll send you more."
"I shouldn't-" she began, but I cut her off.
"No buts or shouldn't. Luke's pack is your family now, but I will help take care of you," Crossing my arms, I give her the mom look I've been practicing.
"Why?" She gave me a look that screamed mistrust, and I couldn't blame her. The girl had known very little affection in her life, and I imagined she thought I was bribing her or trying to gain favor.
"Because that's what family does," It's what I had, and Zoe nodded firmly in agreement. "We take care of each other."
"But we're not family," She looked more confused, and Zoe sighed in exasperation like they'd already gone through this.
