Rituals like this are simple.
When you see them on TV, they're made to look elaborate, and you have to do them at specific hours. That's true for some things, like the Alpha or Luna ritual, but not rites that are for personal use. You also don't need magical supplies with enchantments. Everything you need can be accomplished with everyday things. At least, that's what Sarah taught me at the beginning of my training with her. However, she also said that using those sorts of items and making the ritual more official made those who didn't use magic more comfortable. So, when you saw a magical ceremony in front of just magic users, it differed from when there was a crowd.
This time, an exception had more to do with me and less to do with appearance.
