"Jesse, I don't-" Jayla begins, but I smile at her reassuringly.
"It's alright. Could you give us a few minutes?" It's crazy to do it, but I want to be alone with my... whatever Ivan is to me, ex. Jayla looks unhappy and glances between us, feeling the energy building. But she finally relents with a sigh.
"I'll go get your lunch." She reaches over and grips my shoulder, letting me know all I need to do is call.
"Thank you." I squeeze her hand before letting her go. We watch her leave, and I turn to face Jessica when the door shuts. Our masks dropped, and the polite smile was replaced with a slight frown.
"Well, just the two of us." I sigh. "Should I be concerned?"
"Do you know the kind of man you're choosing to be with?" she leans forward, her voice cold.
'The kind of guy who forgets to mention his ex works at the hospital you're staying at?'
"I know exactly who I'm with," I tell her confidently.
