Suddenly, I felt the onslaught of pain, and Diederick didn't mean shit to me anymore. What he'd said mattered but not as much as my mate did. I know this pain, I've felt it before, and I prayed never to feel it again. The sensation was like your heart being crushed in your chest. Then, the inability to breathe without screaming and the certainty that your life would end. Nefera was dying. Something had triggered that goddamn curse!
